On a Samsung Galaxy S21, press and release the Side button and Volume Down button at the same time to capture the screen. For a longer capture, tap the Scroll capture icon (two downward arrows) in the toolbar after the screenshot. Find saved captures in Gallery under Albums > Screenshots.
How to take a standard screenshot
- Open the screen you want to capture.
- Press and release the Side button and Volume Down button together.
A brief flash indicates that the screenshot was captured. Samsung’s Galaxy S21-series user guide gives this button combination as the standard method.

How to capture a scrolling page
Use Scroll capture when the content extends below the visible screen, such as a long page or conversation.

- Take a screenshot using Side and Volume Down.
- When the screenshot toolbar appears, tap the Scroll capture icon, shown as two downward arrows. Tap it again as needed to include more of the page.
The option may not appear if there is no more content to scroll. Samsung documents the Galaxy-specific control in its screenshot support instructions. Google’s general Android guidance describes scrolling screenshots on Android 12 and later for most scrollable screens; the available controls can differ by device.

Use a palm swipe instead
If you would rather gesture than press buttons, first check that Palm swipe to capture is enabled:
- Open Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures.
- Turn on Palm swipe to capture.
- Keep the edge of your hand in contact with the display and sweep it across the screen.
If the setting is missing, the feature may not be available on that device variant or software version. Samsung notes that options can vary by model, carrier, and software.
Where screenshots are saved
Open Gallery > Albums > Screenshots to browse your captures. Samsung also documents locating image files through My Files > Images. From Gallery, open a screenshot to crop or edit it, then save or share the result.
Screenshot settings and other capture options
The S21-series guide lists screenshot and screen-recording options at Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recordings. Depending on the software, these include showing the screenshot toolbar, deleting captures after sharing, hiding status and navigation bars, saving originals, choosing JPG or PNG, and selecting a save location.
Samsung also lists voice commands through Bixby or Google Assistant and a Take screenshot shortcut in the Tasks Edge panel. S Pen Screen write applies only to compatible devices; do not expect every option to appear on every S21 model or software build.
If a screenshot will not work
- Try the button press again: Press Side and Volume Down briefly and release them together rather than holding them down.
- Check the gesture setting: If palm swipe does nothing, verify it is enabled under Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures.
- Consider app restrictions: Some protected apps or screens block screenshots for privacy or security. There may be no setting that overrides this restriction.
- Allow for menu differences: Samsung says screen settings and feature availability can vary by model, software version, and carrier.
