For remote connections and configurable panes, start by comparing Tabby and electerm; for extensibility, consider Hyper. The other entries may suit more specific workflows, but check their current documentation for platform support, licensing, and release status before installing.
How to choose among these terminal emulators
First decide what you need the application to do. A local terminal window, an SSH client, a serial console, and a workspace that combines terminal sessions with file management are not interchangeable. Then check whether the current release supports your operating system and architecture, and whether its interface and resource demands suit your machine.

- Local shell or remote access: Tabby documents local shell support alongside SSH and serial connections. electerm combines terminal sessions with SSH/SFTP and other connection protocols.
- Layout and customization: Tabby lists tabs, split panes, and themes. Hyper emphasizes extensibility and open web standards.
- Implementation: “Built with web technologies” does not mean “built with Electron.” The documented stacks differ, and Terax is described as using Tauri, Rust, and React.
- Resource use: There is no comparable benchmark across these nine projects. Tabby explicitly says it is not lightweight; check actual use on your own hardware if memory or responsiveness is a concern.
The roundup presenting these nine choices is dated August 23, 2026. Project capabilities and release details can change, so use each project’s current documentation as the final check.

The nine projects at a glance
Tabby
Tabby is a configurable terminal emulator, SSH client, and serial client for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its documented features include split panes, tabs, themes, remote connections, and support for several Windows shells. It explicitly cautions that it is not lightweight, so it may be a less suitable first choice for a machine where low resource use is the priority. Tabby project page
#1 Best Overall
- [WIDELY APPLICATIONS]: Suitable for U disk, keyboard, mouse, camera, printer, mobile phone and other devices with USB interface. Terminal blocks make it easy to test electronics equipment or power up.
- [DURABLE]: Nickel-plated interface, anti-friction, strong oxidation resistance, effectively reduce resistance. The signal is more stable and has a longer service life.
- [EASY to USE]: No soldering required. Just use a small screwdriver to open up the terminal blocks, slide in your stranded or solid-core wire, and re-tighten. Save you from solder trouble, no need to purchase expensive tool. Great time and money saver.
- [FLEXBILITY]: The terminal block itself is removable from the body. It's more durable than soldering wires onto a connector. Can extend the length of the USB cable, ideal for you electronic DIY projects and test the equipment that with USB interface ports.
- All the pins are clearly labeled, which is really nice because we keep forgetting the order. Equipped with both a dedicated screwdriver and a commonly used power cord
Wave Terminal
Wave Terminal is included in the roundup as an AI-native terminal. The roundup is the available basis for that description here; an older LinuxLinks article from July 2024 described it as free and open source and discussed Linux packages, but that older coverage does not establish current releases or platform support. Check the project’s own current documentation before relying on specific capabilities or compatibility. LinuxLinks coverage from July 2024
electerm
electerm combines a terminal with SSH/SFTP and other connection protocols, plus a graphical file manager. Its project describes an Electron, React, and CSS implementation and lists desktop and mobile operating systems. The project page states that it is MIT-licensed. electerm project page

Terax
Terax is described as a terminal-first workspace built with Tauri, Rust, and React. That makes it a different implementation profile from an Electron application: its interface uses React, while Tauri and Rust are also part of its stack. The available description does not establish a full current platform, license, or release-status picture, so confirm those details in the project documentation. LinuxLinks coverage of Terax

Kerminal
Kerminal is named in the roundup as a modern terminal emulator and SSH manager. The information available here does not independently establish its current license, supported platforms, or detailed feature set; confirm those points with its current project documentation before adopting it.
DomTerm
DomTerm is listed as a terminal emulator, REPL console, and screen multiplexer. Those roles suggest a workflow beyond a basic terminal window, but current platform and license details are not established here. Check the project’s documentation for the behavior and compatibility you need.

What “built with web technologies” does—and does not—tell you
The phrase describes a broad implementation approach, not a guarantee that all projects share the same runtime, resource profile, or feature set. The documented examples include electerm’s Electron, React, and CSS stack; Hyper’s use of open web standards; and Terax’s Tauri, Rust, and React stack. The roundup groups the nine under a web-technology umbrella, but the available evidence does not independently verify the precise stack for every entry.
Likewise, an open-source label should not substitute for checking the license of the exact project and release you plan to use. The sources reviewed establish MIT licensing for Hyper and electerm, but do not settle license or current status for every project in the list. The available documentation does not establish xterm.js as one of these nine desktop choices; it is a separate terminal-emulation project, so it should not be treated as a direct substitute in this roundup.
Quick Recap
Before you install
- Check operating-system and architecture support. Confirm that the current release offers a build for your system. The reviewed sources specifically document broad platform support for Tabby and electerm; do not assume the same for the other entries.
- Match the connection model to your work. If you need SSH, serial, SFTP, or another remote protocol, verify that the project supports that protocol rather than assuming every terminal emulator does.
- Confirm the license and release channel. Read the project’s current license and release notes, especially if you are selecting software for organizational use or need a maintained build.
- Test on the target machine. No comparable memory or performance measurements are available for this group. If efficiency matters, try the application with your ordinary tabs, panes, and connections rather than inferring performance from its technology label.
