Reports that the Galaxy Note 20 series is now getting one of its final updates usually means Samsung is finishing the device’s software lifecycle for its flagship hardware. Practically, you can think of this as the last stretch of maintenance: fewer feature changes and more security, bug fixes, and stability work.
If you want the most reliable experience—especially for banking apps, payments, work profiles, or anything that depends on recent security patches—you should verify whether your exact model has a new firmware build available and install it safely.

When you see language like final updates in news coverage, the important part for you is whether your phone’s software version/build number is improving (new security patch level, new build date, and a new firmware identifier).
Before you update: prerequisites and what to verify
Late-stage firmware updates can still be safe and worthwhile, but you’ll reduce risk if you prepare properly.
- Battery: Charge to at least 50% (better: 70%+).
- Storage: Leave at least 2–3 GB free for the download and installation steps.
- Backup: Back up photos, documents, and app data. For most people, Samsung Cloud or Smart Switch is enough.
- Network: Use a stable Wi‑Fi connection or the phone’s most reliable mobile data plan for downloads.
- Unlocked vs carrier: Update availability can vary by region and carrier. Don’t assume every Note 20 gets the same build at the same moment.
If you use an eSIM or a work profile (MDM/Knox), it’s also smart to ensure your device policy allows OS updates.

How to check your current software and confirm the update
Before you install anything, check your current version and security patch level so you can confirm what actually changed.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Software update.
- Tap Download and install.
- If an update appears, review the details shown on-screen (often includes security patch level and build information).
- To capture your current state, go to Settings > About phone and note:
Software version, Build number, and Security patch level.
After the update, re-check those same fields. A “final update” should show a newer security patch level and a changed build number.
Update via OTA (Settings app) on Galaxy Note 20
OTA (over-the-air) is the most common method, and it’s usually the cleanest path if the update is available for your exact model.
- Connect to Wi‑Fi (recommended).
- Open Settings > Software update.
- Tap Download and install.
- When prompted, confirm and start the download.
- After download finishes, tap Install now (or schedule installation if that option appears).
- Let the phone reboot and complete the process. Do not interrupt power or force a reboot during installation.
When the phone comes back, give it a few minutes to finish background tasks (app optimizations, index updates, and notification service re-initialization).

Update via PC with Smart Switch
If OTA stalls, Smart Switch can be more reliable because it downloads and stages firmware through a PC connection.
- Install Samsung Smart Switch on your computer (Windows or macOS).
- Use a data-capable USB cable to connect your Galaxy Note 20 / Note 20 Ultra.
- Open Smart Switch and wait for the device to be recognized.
- Choose Update (or Firmware update, depending on the UI version).
- Follow prompts to download the package and update the phone.
- Keep the phone connected until Smart Switch reports completion and the phone fully boots.
Smart Switch may request a backup depending on the firmware path. If it does, let it complete—skipping backups can complicate recovery if something goes wrong.
If the update won’t install: troubleshooting by symptom
Late-stage updates can fail for mundane reasons: storage pressure, unstable connectivity, a temporary Samsung server issue, or a transient system error.
Update button is missing or nothing downloads
- Check compatibility: Make sure you’re updating the correct device model (Note 20 vs Note 20 Ultra vs region variants).
- Try again later: Carrier rollouts can be staggered by days or weeks.
- Restart once: A simple reboot can clear a stuck update check.
- Confirm region lock: If you recently swapped SIMs or traveled, your phone may still be negotiating update metadata.
Download stuck or repeatedly fails
- Switch networks: Move from Wi‑Fi to mobile data (or vice versa) and try again.
- Free space: Aim for at least 2–3 GB free before retrying.
- Pause VPN/Private DNS: If you use AdGuard, a VPN, or custom DNS, temporarily disable them.
- Clear update cache: In many Samsung builds, cache clearing can help. If you’re comfortable, use recovery mode to clear cache partition (avoid factory reset for now).
Installation error or boot loop
- Force restart carefully: If the phone is frozen, perform a standard restart (avoid repeated power cycling).
- Try Smart Switch: Reattempt using Smart Switch on a PC, which can replace a corrupted staging download.
- Wipe cache partition: This can clear problematic update artifacts without erasing user data.
- Factory reset only if needed: If errors persist, you may eventually need a full reset—do backups first.
If you’re stuck in a boot loop or you see repeated recovery prompts, stop experimenting and use the safest recovery method you can (Smart Switch or authorized service). Flashing firmware manually is not beginner-friendly.
Wi‑Fi works but OTA still fails
- Use another Wi‑Fi: Some routers block long downloads or have captive portal quirks.
- Check time and date: Incorrect time can break certificate validation during secure downloads.
- Disable battery optimizers: For the download service to run, aggressive battery settings can interfere on certain systems.
Advanced options: update after preparing for failure
These are “last mile” methods. If the OTA update is failing repeatedly, you’re usually better off switching methods (OTA to Smart Switch) rather than jumping straight to risky procedures.
Factory reset considerations
A factory reset can clear system corruption, but it’s disruptive. It also removes apps and settings, and it can affect authenticator apps or account recovery flows if you aren’t prepared.
- Back up using Smart Switch or Samsung Cloud.
- Write down recovery steps for important accounts (Google, Samsung account, and any SMS/Authenticator setup).
- Remove external storage dependencies (move files off SD cards if you use one).
- After reset, attempt the update again via OTA or Smart Switch.
If your update fails due to a firmware mismatch (rare, but possible with certain regions/carriers), a reset won’t fix that—Smart Switch or authorized firmware handling is the correct path.

Firmware reflash via Odin (only if you know what you’re doing)
Reflashing firmware using Odin is powerful, but it comes with real risks: wrong firmware for your exact model/region, accidental mismatch with bootloaders, and boot failures.
If you go this route, you must:
- Use the correct firmware package for your exact device model and region.
- Verify integrity and authenticity of the firmware source.
- Understand how Odin partition selection works (and avoid mixing incompatible files).
If you’re not fully comfortable with Odin workflows, prefer Smart Switch or a service center. “Final updates” still deserve a careful approach.
What to expect from late-stage updates (security, stability, and compatibility)
By the final update window, the most noticeable changes are usually under the hood. Feature upgrades are less common; instead, you may see:
- Security patches for Android and Samsung components (often monthly).
- Bug fixes related to connectivity, app stability, and system responsiveness.
- Compatibility improvements for banking apps and newer versions of Google services.
- Security hardening that can affect how apps request permissions or perform background tasks.
Even if you don’t notice new features, keeping the phone updated matters. Many modern apps increasingly require current security patch levels to operate safely.

Recommended Free Tools
- Restart after completion (unless the update process already did).
- Check app permissions for banking, location, and Bluetooth devices.
- Update critical apps from the Play Store (Google Play services, Google apps, and your main utilities).
- Re-test anything sensitive: payments, Wi‑Fi calling, VPN connections, and smart device pairing.
If you see unusual battery drain after updating, check battery usage and disable any recently changed settings—then give the system a day or two to re-index apps.
Frequently asked questions
Will installing this update make my Galaxy Note 20 slower?
Usually, no. Late-stage updates focus on security and stability. If you notice lag right after updating, a day of background optimization is normal; if it persists, check storage space and battery stats.

How do I know the update is really the one described as a final update?
Look at Security patch level and the firmware Build number in Settings > About phone. A final-stage update should show a newer patch level and a different build identifier.
Can I update if my carrier hasn’t offered it yet?
Sometimes. OTA availability is carrier/region-specific. Smart Switch may still show the update if your firmware region matches. If neither method offers it, you may need to wait for rollout completion.
What should I do if I already updated and now an app won’t open?
Try updating the app from the Play Store first. If it still fails, clear the app’s cache (not data) in Settings > Apps, then restart. For persistent issues, reinstall the app.
Is it safe to update on the Galaxy Note 20 over mobile data?
It can be, but OTA downloads can be large. If your data plan is limited or unstable, Wi‑Fi is the better choice. If you must use mobile data, ensure the phone has strong signal before starting.
Bottom Line
If the Galaxy Note 20 series is now receiving one of its final updates, treat it as maintenance that’s worth doing: confirm the build and security patch level, then install via OTA or Smart Switch with sufficient battery and free storage.
When updates don’t work, the fastest fix is usually switching methods (OTA to Smart Switch) and addressing connectivity or storage issues. If you’re hitting repeated installation errors, move to safer recovery steps like clearing cache first, and only consider factory reset or firmware reflash when you’re fully prepared.
