There is no universal pixel size for a full-width website image. Choose source dimensions from the image’s largest rendered slot, the device pixel density you need to support, the aspect ratio, and whether the design crops the image. A responsive image normally needs several source widths rather than one oversized file.
What “full width” actually means
“Full width” describes how an image renders in a particular layout; it does not define the file’s pixel dimensions. An image may fill a 390 px mobile viewport, a 1,200 px content column, or a 2,000 px desktop hero. The correct source is the smallest one that can cover the largest expected rendered slot at the target display density without visible softness.
Start with the design, not a generic image-size chart. Record the rendered width and height at each supported layout, whether the image is above the fold, and whether text or a subject must remain inside a safe area. A full-width hero that spans the viewport generally needs more source variants than a thumbnail because its slot changes across a much wider range.
How to calculate practical source widths
- Measure the rendered slot. Identify the image’s CSS width at mobile, tablet and desktop layouts. A “full-width” image inside a max-width wrapper may never render as wide as the viewport.
- Account for density. A high-density display can use roughly two physical pixels for each CSS pixel. Supply a candidate near the largest practical CSS width multiplied by the density you intend to support, while balancing download weight.
- Create width variants. Provide several files, such as 480, 768, 1200, 1600 and 2000 px wide when those values match your actual layouts. These are examples, not mandatory breakpoints.
- Describe the slot with
sizes. Tell the browser how wide the image will render at each media condition so it can select an appropriatesrcsetcandidate. - Optimize every candidate. Dimensions alone do not determine performance. Content, format, compression and the page’s performance budget affect file size.
A wider monitor does not automatically require the largest file: an image occupying one column may render narrower than a full-bleed image on a smaller layout. The browser can make a better choice when the candidate list and sizes accurately describe the design.

Responsive HTML with srcset and sizes
For a fluid image whose entire composition should remain visible, use width descriptors and preserve the intrinsic ratio:
<img
src="hero-1200.webp"
srcset="
hero-480.webp 480w,
hero-768.webp 768w,
hero-1200.webp 1200w,
hero-1600.webp 1600w,
hero-2000.webp 2000w"
sizes="(min-width: 1200px) 1000px,
(min-width: 768px) 75vw,
100vw"
width="2000"
height="1125"
alt="Description of the hero image"
>
The width and height attributes describe the intrinsic ratio; they do not force a 2,000 px display. The browser uses the sizes conditions and device density to choose among the candidates. Set a fallback src that is useful for browsers that do not select from srcset.
Use the picture element when mobile needs a genuinely different composition rather than merely a smaller copy:
<picture>
<source media="(max-width: 767px)" srcset="hero-mobile-768.webp 768w, hero-mobile-1200.webp 1200w" sizes="100vw">
<img src="hero-wide-1600.webp" srcset="hero-wide-1200.webp 1200w, hero-wide-1600.webp 1600w, hero-wide-2000.webp 2000w" sizes="100vw" width="2000" height="1125" alt="Description of the hero image">
</picture>
Art direction is appropriate when the focal subject, text-overlay area or important edge content would be lost in a single crop. Check every supported viewport shape, not just one desktop and one phone.

Preserve the ratio or define the crop
Fluid image showing the whole composition
.hero img {
max-inline-size: 100%;
block-size: auto;
display: block;
}
Constraining the inline size and setting the block size to auto keeps the image proportional as its container changes. The browser can also reserve space from the declared intrinsic dimensions, reducing layout movement while the file loads.
Fixed hero frame that must be filled
.hero-frame {
aspect-ratio: 16 / 6;
overflow: hidden;
}
.hero-frame img {
inline-size: 100%;
block-size: 100%;
object-fit: cover;
object-position: 50% 50%;
}
object-fit: cover fills the frame by cropping. Set object-position toward the subject—for example, 65% 40%—and inspect narrow and wide shapes. Use object-fit: contain when every edge must remain visible; empty space may appear inside the frame.
Do not stretch pixels to meet a target rectangle. If the design changes the shape, reserve that intended aspect ratio and choose a deliberate crop or an art-directed source.
Choosing a hero aspect ratio
Pick the ratio from the layout and content. A cinematic banner, a shallow announcement strip and a tall mobile hero have different composition needs. The frequently repeated “1600 × 500” suggestion is a tourism-handbook example, not a universal web standard; use it only when that specific frame suits your design. Likewise, a generic file-weight target such as 200 KB is not a reliable requirement for every image: photographic detail, format, dimensions and compression change the result.

Layout stability and loading behavior
Include intrinsic width and height whenever possible. Their ratio lets the browser allocate the image’s space before the response arrives, reducing cumulative movement. If CSS imposes a different frame, use aspect-ratio on the frame and a defined object-fit mode.
Do not lazy-load an above-the-fold hero by default. Guidance from web.dev recommends lazy loading for below-the-fold images and describes fetch priority for important images. These controls affect when a resource is requested, not the dimensions the resource should contain. Apply them selectively and verify behavior in current browsers.
A practical variant plan
| Layout situation | What to measure | Source strategy | Crop decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-bleed desktop hero | Largest viewport slot and overlay-safe area | Several wide candidates up to the largest supported slot and density | Cover only if the frame is fixed; otherwise preserve ratio |
| Content-column image | Column width at each breakpoint | Do not serve a viewport-wide source when the column is narrow | Usually show the whole composition |
| Mobile-specific composition | Portrait or short-wide mobile frame | Use picture with a separate art-directed source |
Place the subject for the mobile crop |
| Below-the-fold illustration | Actual slot and loading priority | Right-size candidates and consider lazy loading | Match the illustration’s intended ratio |

- Measure the rendered slot at every supported breakpoint, including max-width wrappers.
- Verify the selected
srcsetcandidate and the calculatedsizesvalue on slow and high-density simulations. - Check focal subjects, text-safe areas and edge content in both orientations.
- Confirm the intrinsic ratio prevents layout movement before the response completes.
- Compare image quality and transfer size after optimization; there is no universal byte target.
- Test the actual production CDN or image pipeline, including cache behavior and format negotiation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I export a full-width image at 1920 pixels wide?
Only if your largest rendered slot and density justify it. A 1920-pixel source can be wasteful for narrower slots; use responsive candidates tied to the real layout.
Does a higher pixel count always make a hero sharper?
No. Sharpness also depends on the rendered size, device density, source quality, format and compression. Oversizing mainly increases transfer cost.
When is picture better than srcset?
Use picture when the composition or crop must change between layouts. Use srcset when the same composition can scale across slots.
