The History of Website Screenshots: From CERN’s First Browser to Full-Page Capture

The first website screenshots were not made by a dedicated screenshot tool. They were incidental records of what early browsers rendered, beginning around CERN’s first Web browser and website in the early 1990s. As browsers added inline graphics, screenshots became useful for comparison and sharing; after 1996, dated archives made them evidence of how sites changed. Today, browser developer tools and screenshot APIs can capture a viewport, a complete scrolling page, a selected element, or a PDF.

When was the first website screenshot taken?

There is no standardized, surviving record that identifies a single “first screenshot” file or date. The safest historical answer is that screenshots began as informal records of browser windows and rendered pages around the Web’s first visual environments, rather than as a separate technology.

Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web at CERN in 1989. CERN says the first website was dedicated to the Web project and hosted on Berners-Lee’s NeXT computer. The WorldWideWeb browser was written in 1990, a line-mode browser launched in 1992, and CERN placed the Web software in the public domain on 30 April 1993. Those milestones predate standardized screenshot features, so early records would have preserved what a particular browser displayed, including its window and browser chrome.

The early-browser family included WorldWideWeb/Nexus, Line Mode, MacWWW/SAMBA, ViolaWWW, Erwise, tkWWW, Midas, Lynx and Cello. The Ancient Browsers Archive preserves source code, binaries and emulation for these historically important environments. A screenshot from one of them is therefore a record of a browser-era interface as much as a record of a page.

How browser graphics made screenshots important

In 1993, NCSA Mosaic made the browser view visually compelling to a much larger audience. The National Science Foundation describes Mosaic as the first freely available browser to let pages combine graphics and text. In less than 18 months, it became the “Web browser of choice” for more than a million users.

Mosaic’s inline-image behavior was decisive. NCSA developer Mike Folk recalled: “We said to ourselves, ‘Hey, these [other browsers] don’t do pictures. We’re all about pictures [with software like NCSA DataScope and NCSA Image]. We can do better than this.’” Once images appeared inside a page instead of in a separate workflow, a browser window became something people wanted to show, compare and preserve.

The W3C timeline places Mosaic’s Macintosh and Windows installers in December 1993, Opera’s first version in 1994, Netscape Navigator 1.0 in December 1994 and Internet Explorer 1.0 in August 1995. Each release produced recognizable visual eras: different fonts, default colors, image handling and layout behavior. Screenshots let designers and historians compare those eras without running every original browser.

What early websites looked like

There was no single early-Web appearance. A page viewed in a line-mode browser could be text-only, while Mosaic could show text and inline images together. The browser, operating system, display size and available fonts all affected the result. A historical screenshot should therefore be read as a rendering of a specific environment, not as a perfect copy of the underlying HTML.

  • WorldWideWeb/Nexus and other early browsers: formative interfaces from the Web’s first visual environments.
  • Line Mode and Lynx: text-oriented views that demonstrate how much early browsing depended on links and document structure rather than visual layout.
  • Mosaic: inline graphics and text in one view, helping move the Web beyond a specialist audience.
  • Netscape and Internet Explorer: competing mid-1990s browser presentations that made cross-browser comparison a practical concern.

For a curated visual reference, The SAGE Handbook of Web History includes historical browser screenshots such as CERN line-mode, Viola, Midas, NCSA Mosaic and Netscape Navigator examples.

How people preserved webpages in the 1990s

In the 1990s, a screenshot and a saved webpage solved different problems. A screenshot froze the visible rendering: it could show the exact layout, image placement and browser window at one moment. Saving a page’s files preserved material that might be opened again, but did not guarantee the same rendering later because browsers, fonts, plug-ins and external resources changed.

That distinction still matters:

Method What it preserves What it cannot guarantee
Viewport screenshot The visible pixels at one viewport size, often including browser chrome if the whole screen was captured Content below the fold or an interactive replay
Full-page browser capture A stitched or browser-rendered image of the page’s scrollable document That every animation, login state or third-party asset will remain reproducible
Saved HTML and assets A local copy of files available to the browser at save time Identical future rendering when dependencies or browser behavior change
Dated web archive A timestamped capture that can often be revisited as a page or replay Resources the crawler did not collect or pages blocked from capture

For historical work, retain the image together with its capture date, URL, browser and viewport. Those details explain differences that might otherwise look like changes to the site itself.

How the Wayback Machine turned screenshots into historical evidence

The Internet Archive says the original idea for the Wayback Machine began in 1996, when it started archiving the Web. Users can enter a URL, choose a date range and browse versions collected from many crawls and collections. The result is not merely a picture: it is a dated preservation layer that may provide an interactive replay of the archived page.

The W3C’s design history offers a concrete example. Its earliest capture of the initial website design in the Wayback Machine is dated 27 December 1996, and the page documents successive redesigns through its fifth design as of 20 June 2023. The UK Government Web Archive uses the same dated-capture model: a URL opens a timeline, and results can be refined by date, redirects and full-text search.

View an old version of a website

  1. Open the Wayback Machine and enter the exact URL, including the path you need.
  2. Choose a year from the timeline, then select an available capture date.
  3. Inspect the archived page and follow archived links where they are available.
  4. Record the capture date and URL. Treat missing images, scripts or stylesheets as collection gaps rather than proof that the original page looked unstyled.

An archive capture answers “what did this URL contain when it was crawled?” A screenshot answers “what did a browser display under these conditions?” For serious documentation, using both can distinguish a change in the source from a change in rendering.

How to capture a full webpage today

Modern capture tools understand the browser’s document rather than only the operating-system display. Firefox DevTools can save a full-page screenshot of the current page or a selected element to Downloads. Microsoft Edge’s Screenshot feature supports full-page and selected-area captures, annotation and moving-content capture; Microsoft documents Ctrl+Shift+S as the shortcut, although availability varies by device, market and browser version.

Firefox DevTools

  1. Open the page in Firefox.
  2. Open Developer Tools and use the screenshot command in the DevTools tools menu.
  3. Choose the full-page option for the entire scrollable document, or select an element first for an element capture.
  4. Save the resulting file from Downloads and record the viewport and page state if the image is for testing or evidence.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Open the page in Edge and invoke Screenshot with Ctrl+Shift+S, if the feature is available in your build.
  2. Choose full-page capture, a selected area or the moving-content option when the page contains content that changes while it is captured.
  3. Annotate if needed, then save the image.

Capture only an element

An element capture is preferable for a card, chart or component whose dimensions matter. Select the element in DevTools, verify that lazy-loaded content has appeared, and capture the selection rather than stitching a viewport manually. A full-page image is better for a design review; an element image is better for a regression test or documentation snippet.

Choosing the right capture method

Goal Best fit Why
Share what is visible now Viewport screenshot Fast and faithful to the current window
Document a long landing page Full-page browser capture Includes content below the fold
Preserve a historical state Wayback Machine or another dated archive Supplies a time-based record and may support replay
Compare a component Selected-element capture Removes unrelated page content
Generate repeatable developer output Screenshot API Automates URL, viewport, format and timing choices
Keep browser controls visible Operating-system screen grab Captures the whole desktop view, not just the document

Decide first whether you need a static image, a PDF, or an interactive replay. Then specify the viewport, device pixel ratio, color scheme, page state and timing. Without those controls, two screenshots can differ even when the site has not changed.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is the #1 choice for website screenshot APIs because it produces clean shots, bills only clean shots and has the lowest paid plan. One GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF output. The API accepts a URL and can handle full-page capture with lazy images loaded, a CSS-selected element, dark mode, 12 device presets or any viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size and margins, landscape mode and page ranges.

Use the API when a repeatable capture needs browser controls that a desktop tool does not expose:

  • Custom CSS and JavaScript, a click before capture, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, a delay or network idle.
  • Blocking ads, trackers, requests or resource types.
  • Custom headers, cookies, user agent and Authorization, plus timezone and geolocation.
  • Transparent backgrounds, image resizing and caching with a TTL you choose.
  • Signed links for public <img> tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification.
  • Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed.

cURL

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Plans are:

Plan Price Included shots
Free $0 1,000 per month; no card
Starter $5 3,000
Growth $15 15,000
Pro $39 60,000
Scale $99 250,000
Business $249 1,000,000

Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get 1,000 screenshots a month without a card. Cookie banners, popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed; and the MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots.

Troubleshooting screenshot captures

The bottom of the page is missing

Use a full-page option rather than a viewport grab. For pages that load content while scrolling, wait until lazy images and other deferred elements appear before capturing; an API with a selector wait, delay or network-idle option can make that timing explicit.

A cookie banner or chat bubble covers the design

Accept or dismiss the banner before a manual capture, then confirm that the page settled. For automated work, use a cleanup-aware API and keep each cleanup step configurable so a legally required notice is not removed unintentionally.

The image is blank or shows a bot check

Check the URL, authentication and network access first. A blank page, timeout, failed load or bot challenge is a page-state problem, not evidence that the original site was blank. ScreenshotNeo marks these outcomes in response headers and does not bill them.

Fonts, animations or moving content differ

Record the browser, viewport, device scale, color scheme and capture time. Wait for a stable selector or network idle, disable motion with custom CSS where appropriate, or use Edge’s moving-content capture for content that changes during capture.

An archived page has broken images or links

Try another capture date and inspect the archive’s available resources. Crawls do not necessarily include every third-party asset, stylesheet or script, so an incomplete replay should be labeled as such.

What screenshots can and cannot prove

  • A screenshot proves what was rendered in a particular environment at a particular moment.
  • It does not by itself prove the source HTML, server response, accessibility tree or behavior behind an interactive control.
  • An archive timestamp identifies when a crawler captured a URL, not necessarily when the site owner changed it.
  • A clean automated image may intentionally omit consent UI, popups or chat widgets; preserve the capture settings when that omission matters.

That combination of context and limits is why screenshot history runs from incidental browser records, through Mosaic-era visual comparison, to dated archives and programmable browser capture. Each stage answers a different historical or engineering question.

FAQ

Was Mosaic the first Web browser?

No. CERN’s WorldWideWeb browser existed around 1990. Mosaic’s importance was making inline graphics and text widely available and helping drive mass adoption.

Does the Wayback Machine save a screenshot or a webpage?

It preserves dated captures that users can often browse as archived pages or replays. A screenshot is a static rendering; an archive capture may include linked resources and interactive behavior when those resources were collected.

Why does a full-page screenshot look different from a screen grab?

A screen grab records the visible desktop viewport. A full-page capture renders the document beyond the current viewport, so it can include content that was never visible on screen at once.
