The Fujifilm Instax Pal 2 is a pocket-sized digital camera with retro styling, an optical viewfinder and controls designed to make taking pictures feel playful. It does not print photos itself. At its announced US MSRP of $169.95, it makes the most sense for someone who values that hands-on experience and wants the option to print selected shots through a separate compatible Instax device. It is a harder sell if image quality, low-light performance or value per dollar comes first.
What the Instax Pal 2 is—and what it is not
Fujifilm announced the Pal 2 on September 14, 2026, as the second generation of its Pal camera line. It captures JPEG still images; the camera body has no film mechanism or built-in printer. Fujifilm says images can be printed using compatible Instax Link smartphone printers or hybrid instant cameras, with film purchased separately. Fujifilm’s announcement and its product information describe it as a digital camera that joins the Instax ecosystem, rather than an instant camera that exposes film on the spot.

That distinction matters when considering the price: buying the Pal 2 gets you the camera, not an instant-print setup. If printing is part of the appeal, budget for a compatible printer or hybrid camera and the right format of Instax film.

Is the Instax Pal 2 worth it?
The case for the Pal 2 is its experience, not a promise of phone-beating image quality. Its optical finder, top LCD, tactile controls, filters and animation mode give it more to play with than a basic novelty camera. But hands-on reviews found its image output lo-fi compared with a modern phone, with noise in dim scenes. That makes the $169.95 announced US price difficult to justify if you mainly want sharp, dependable everyday photos.

TechRadar’s September 2026 hands-on review describes the results as lo-fi and says the small sensor and lens do not match a modern phone’s image quality. The reviewer criticizes the price for a novelty camera while acknowledging its tactile appeal. Tom’s Guide’s October 2026 hands-on review also reports noisy low-light images. These are reviewer assessments, not standardized lab comparisons.
How the Pal 2 compares with the Kodak Charmera
The two cameras appeal to people drawn to small, playful cameras, but they are not interchangeable products. The available reviews support a narrow comparison: TechRadar sees the Pal 2 as a lo-fi novelty camera whose tactile design is part of its appeal, while the Pal 2’s stated features include an optical viewfinder, a top LCD, autofocus with face recognition, app-based editing and a route to optional Instax prints. Those features give it a more specified camera-and-print ecosystem than a purely novelty-oriented miniature camera, but they do not establish better image quality than the Charmera.
Choose by what you want from the experience: a toy-like camera for the novelty, or a tiny digital camera with framing aids and the option to print selected images through a separate Instax device. The hands-on evidence here does not establish a controlled, direct image-quality comparison between the Pal 2 and Charmera, so it would be misleading to declare one the better camera outright.

Image quality and camera specifications
Fujifilm specifies two JPEG still-image sizes: 10MP (3776 × 2832 pixels) and 1MP (1280 × 960 pixels). The camera uses a 1/3.06-inch CMOS sensor and a 28mm-equivalent f/2.2 lens, with autofocus that includes face recognition. There is no optical zoom. The 10MP figure describes image dimensions; it does not, on its own, predict sharpness, detail or low-light performance.
The manufacturer lists a shooting distance of 8 cm to infinity, automatic ISO sensitivity from 100 to 1600, automatic exposure and exposure compensation from −2 to +2 EV. Flash can be set to automatic, off or on; its specified range is approximately 60 cm to 1.5 m. These are Fujifilm specifications, not independent performance measurements. Reviewers’ reports of lo-fi output and noisy dim-scene images are especially relevant if you plan to use the camera indoors.
The Pal 2 records stills, not video, and Tom’s Guide reports that it is not weather-sealed. It is best treated as a fair-weather still camera rather than a rugged or versatile replacement for a phone.

Framing, filters and the app workflow
Fujifilm lists an optical viewfinder and a 1.30-inch TFT color LCD on top of the camera, rated at approximately 170,000 dots. The finder offers a way to compose without relying only on the small LCD. Fujifilm also describes five filter themes with six effects each, a 10-frame animation mode, remote shooting and image transfer and editing through the Instax Pal app. The described smartphone workflow requires that app.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTom’s Guide calls the optical finder and top LCD useful upgrades over the original Pal. Its review says the app offers 30 effects, with up to six loaded on the camera at a time. That creates a trade-off: the camera offers more tactile framing than a screen-only novelty device, but using its transfer and editing features adds a phone-and-app step. For moving images, the limitation is straightforward: the camera does not record video.
Printing: which Instax device and film do you need?
The Pal 2 does not print by itself. Fujifilm says you can print through compatible Instax Link smartphone printers or hybrid instant cameras. Prints can use Instax mini, SQUARE or WIDE formats; Fujifilm also lists a no-frame 4:3 option. Match the printer or hybrid camera to the film format you intend to buy, because the camera, printing device and film are separate parts of the setup.

Before choosing a bundle, confirm that the specific Link printer or hybrid model supports Pal 2 image printing and the format you want. The product information identifies compatible printer families and formats, but does not make printer and film purchases part of the Pal 2 itself. Fujifilm’s compatibility information and its US product page are the relevant references for checking device compatibility.

Fujifilm estimates that internal memory holds approximately 100 images. For more capacity, the camera accepts microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC cards up to 2 TB. Its estimated card capacity is about 400 10MP images or 3,400 1MP images per 1 GB; actual counts can vary with files. Check card type and capacity against the official specifications before buying.
The camera weighs approximately 87 g and measures 37 × 42 × 92.3 mm, excluding projecting parts. Fujifilm specifies USB Type-C and Bluetooth 5.3 Low Energy. Its specifications estimate image transfer at about 0.75 seconds per image over USB and about 15 seconds over Bluetooth; the US product page phrases USB transfer as up to 0.7 seconds per image. Treat both as manufacturer estimates that may vary in use, rather than guaranteed transfer times.

Fujifilm estimates charging at approximately two to three hours, depending on temperature, and specifies an operating range of 5–35°C. Tom’s Guide reports a little over 90 images in its own battery test; that is one reviewer’s test result, not a universal battery-life guarantee.
Price and availability
Fujifilm’s September 14, 2026 launch announcement gave the Pal 2 a US MSRP of $169.95 and a Canadian MSRP of $219.99, with availability expected in late September. TechRadar reported launch pricing of £149.99 in the UK and AU$249 in Australia, and described black/silver and white/silver colorways. These are announced or reported launch prices, not guarantees of current retail pricing or stock; check local listings before buying.
The Pal 2’s total cost depends on whether you stop at digital photos or add printing. A printer or hybrid camera and format-matched film are additional purchases, so the complete instant-print setup costs more than the camera’s MSRP. No single bundle price is established here because the printer and film choices vary.

Who should buy it?
- Consider it if the compact form, optical finder, physical controls and playful shooting features are the point, and you are comfortable with lo-fi image quality.
- Skip it if you want a meaningful image-quality upgrade over your phone, strong low-light results, video, weather protection or built-in instant printing.
- Plan the print setup first if physical photos are essential: identify a compatible Instax Link printer or hybrid camera, then match its format to the film you want.
