For dedicated fuel-price comparisons, start with GasBuddy; for prices alongside navigation, use Waze; and in the UK, consider an app that uses the government’s Fuel Finder data if timestamped official records are your priority. None makes every listed price a guarantee, and a fuel-price forecast is not the same thing as a verified prediction. Compare the same fuel grade and payment basis, then factor in the drive to the station.
Which fuel price app fits the way you drive?
| Option | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| GasBuddy | Finding and comparing listed prices | Its dedicated Find Gas workflow supports searches and sorting or filtering; GasBuddy says prices are supplied by users. GasBuddy’s price-finding guide and Google Play listing describe the service. |
| Waze | Looking for fuel while planning or following a route | Station search is built into navigation and results can be sorted by price, distance or brand. Data can come from users, Google and other partners, and Waze does not guarantee third-party accuracy. See Waze’s explanation of search results and preferred gas stations and fuel prices. |
| UK apps using Fuel Finder | UK drivers who prioritize government-sourced, timestamped price records | Fuel Finder provides price and forecourt data, but each app determines how it displays and refreshes that information. The government explains the data service in its Fuel Finder API and email guidance and lists examples of participating services in its Fuel Finder collection. |
How trustworthy are the prices?
GasBuddy: user-submitted prices
GasBuddy says its prices come from users. That makes the app useful for spotting reported deals, but a listing can be stale or differ from the price at the pump. Its help pages explain that users can search nearby or by city or postal code, and that a cash-price toggle appears for some US stations. The price-finding guide also describes the app’s nearby results and controls.

Waze: user and partner information, with an explicit caveat
Waze says business information may come from its users, Google and other partners. It also states: “Waze does not verify third-party data and therefore cannot guarantee the accuracy of the information and is not responsible for any out-of-date or inaccurate data.” Treat its prices as leads to check, not as a promise of what a station will charge. Waze’s search-results help page explains the data caveat.
Fuel Finder: timestamped UK records, not instant app refreshes
The UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero says Fuel Finder provides retail prices by fuel type, forecourt details, amenities, opening hours and timestamps for prices and sites. Retailers must submit price changes within 30 minutes. The department also says its downloadable CSV is updated twice daily, with API access and email subscriptions available. The 30-minute duty applies to retailers’ submissions; it does not mean every third-party app refreshes instantly. An app can add delay through its own refresh or caching schedule. Read the department’s Fuel Finder data guidance.

What the station maps and search tools actually do
GasBuddy: a dedicated comparison workflow
In GasBuddy, tap Find Gas to look for nearby prices or search by city or postal code. The station-search guide says app results show around 50 nearby stations and can be sorted by price, distance or both. Filters include brand, rating and amenities; if a station you expect is missing, a filter may be hiding it, so reset filters or use the map. GasBuddy says its website also has a map. These instructions are in GasBuddy’s station-finding guide.
Waze: station search alongside route navigation
Waze lets drivers choose a preferred fuel type and brand, and sort station results by price, distance or brand. Users can report or edit fuel types and prices. This is convenient when a stop needs to fit a trip, but it is not a substitute for checking the final price at the pump. Consult Waze’s help for preferred gas stations and fuel prices.

Fuel Finder apps: features depend on the app
The UK government says Fuel Finder data appears in third-party apps and websites, including Confused.com, DriveScore, Fuel Finder UK, Fuel Spy, MoneySuperMarket, MotorMouth, PetrolPrices.com and RAC Fuel Watch. The available filters, map, presentation and refresh cadence are set by each service; do not assume every Fuel Finder-powered app has the same tools. The government’s Fuel Finder collection provides scheme information and participating-service examples.
How to compare stations without being misled by the cheapest listing
- Match the fuel. Compare the same fuel type and grade at every station. A lower price for a different fuel is not a meaningful comparison.
- Match the payment basis. Check whether a displayed price assumes cash or another payment method. GasBuddy says a cash-price toggle is available for some US stations; do not assume that display applies everywhere.
- Set the same constraints. In GasBuddy, check brand, rating and amenity filters. In Waze, set preferred fuel and brand if relevant, then use the available sorting options.
- Consider distance and route diversion. A lower listed price farther away may not be the most convenient stop. Compare distance as well as price, and account for the extra driving your route requires.
- Check the timing and confirm at the station. Where a timestamp is available, use it to judge how recent the record is. Crowd- and partner-sourced prices can be out of date, and third-party apps may not refresh official data immediately. Confirm the price displayed at the forecourt before paying.
Where each app is available
Fuel Finder is a UK scheme. GasBuddy’s current store descriptions are not fully consistent: one Google Play listing describes the US and Canada, while another describes the US, Canada and Australia. Check the listing for your country rather than assuming the same coverage everywhere. One current GasBuddy Google Play listing and another current listing describe different market coverage.
Waze fuel-price availability varies by country. Check whether station prices appear in your local app before relying on that feature; the cited Waze help explains the search workflow, not universal country coverage.
Can fuel apps predict when prices will rise or fall?
Forecasts should be judged separately from live or recently reported prices. Fuel Finder UK’s Prediction Analytics page describes a seven-day outlook by fuel type and region, with direction and magnitude refreshed on the page. It says backtesting is pending. The service also reports that an earlier signal misfired, that weights were rebalanced using historical evaluations, and that replay testing reused the same months used for reweighting. It cautions that this development evidence does not establish future accuracy, overlapping forecasts are not independent trials, and directional accuracy does not show the savings from choosing a particular fill-up time. See Fuel Finder UK’s Prediction Analytics page.
No comparable, validated forecast capability for GasBuddy or Waze, or independent apples-to-apples evidence ranking fuel-app forecast accuracy or realized savings, is established here. Treat a forecast as an uncertain signal rather than proven advice about when to buy.
What the UK scheme’s savings estimate means
On 31 March 2026, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero said Fuel Finder is intended to help a household with a car save around £40 a year. That is the government’s estimate for the scheme, not a guaranteed saving for an individual and not a controlled comparison showing that one app beats another. Read the government’s Fuel Finder announcement.

Choose by your priority
- Pick GasBuddy if you want a dedicated station-price search with community-reported prices and sorting or filters.
- Pick Waze if you want to look for fuel within a navigation workflow and your local version shows station prices.
- In the UK, consider a Fuel Finder-powered app if government-sourced price records and timestamps matter most; inspect the specific app’s filters and update behavior.
- Do not choose on forecast claims alone. The available Fuel Finder UK forecast page says backtesting is pending, and comparable independent evidence across apps is not established.
