Set the laptop to its native resolution, choose a refresh rate Windows actually offers, and enable HDR only if the built-in screen supports HDR games and apps. The exact controls depend on the laptop model: for example, ASUS lists its 2026 ROG Strix SCAR 18 with a 3840 × 2400 16:10 display, 120Hz defaults in several GPU modes, and support for up to 240Hz when configured for Ultimate GPU mode.

Check what your exact laptop display supports

Before changing settings, look up the full laptop model and SKU on the manufacturer’s specification page. Confirm its native resolution, available refresh rates, HDR capability, and any GPU-mode requirements. An advertised maximum is not necessarily the default mode or available under every power or graphics profile.

“4K” can also mean different pixel dimensions on a laptop. The ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 (2026), for example, has an 18-inch 16:10 Mini LED panel with a listed resolution of 3840 × 2400 (WQUXGA), not the 16:9 3840 × 2160 resolution. ASUS lists up to 240Hz, 3ms, 100% DCI-P3 and more than 2,000 dimming zones; these are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 (2026) specifications

Other 18-inch laptops may use different resolutions, refresh-rate limits, panel technologies, HDR features and control software. Use the precise specifications for your own model rather than assuming it matches this example.

How do I set my gaming laptop to 120Hz?

  1. Set native resolution: Open Settings > System > Display and select the built-in display. Choose the manufacturer-listed native resolution if it is not already selected.
  2. Open Advanced display: Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Select the laptop screen if more than one display is connected.
  3. Choose a listed refresh rate: Select 120Hz if it appears for the selected display and resolution. Windows only offers modes available in the current configuration; do not assume a rate shown in a product advertisement will appear in every GPU mode.
  4. Check the vendor utility if a mode is missing: Some laptops use manufacturer software to control graphics or display modes. On the SCAR 18 (2026), ASUS says 120Hz is the default in Standard, Eco and Optimized GPU modes, while its 240Hz option requires selecting Ultimate in Armoury Crate. That instruction is specific to this ASUS model, not a general Windows setting. ASUS ROG SCAR 18 refresh-rate and GPU-mode details

A higher refresh rate can make motion appear smoother, but its benefit depends on the game and the frame rate the GPU can produce. Use the highest supported rate when gaming plugged in if smooth motion is the priority; a lower rate or a battery-oriented GPU profile may better suit mobile use. High-performance modes can also use more power and produce more fan noise.

Why is my laptop screen stuck at 120Hz?

  • Check the GPU mode. A vendor utility may determine which display modes are exposed. On the cited SCAR 18, 240Hz requires Armoury Crate’s Ultimate GPU mode; the other listed modes default to 120Hz.
  • Check the selected resolution and display. In Advanced display, make sure you are viewing the built-in panel and check the rates available at its current resolution.
  • Test with Dynamic Refresh Rate off. On systems that support it, Windows Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) can limit the maximum refresh rate in some games. If a game is unexpectedly capped, turn DRR off temporarily and retest. Microsoft’s available refresh-rate options and DRR guidance are here: Change the refresh rate on your monitor in Windows
  • Recheck after configuration changes. Resolution, GPU mode, display drivers and power profiles can affect the available list. Return to Advanced display after changing one of them.

Choose a neutral color profile before fine-tuning

Start with the display’s default or neutral color preset for general use. On supported ASUS laptops, Armoury Crate’s GameVisual offers scenario presets such as Default, Racing, Scenery, RTS/RPG, FPS, Cinema, Eyecare and Vivid. Availability varies by model and software version. ASUS describes these as viewing modes; selecting one does not establish that the panel is calibrated for accurate color. Compare any preset in the games and apps you actually use. Look for visible shadow detail, retained highlight detail, readable text and natural-looking saturation. A vivid or genre-specific preset may suit personal preference, but it can alter the image rather than make it more accurate.

A colorimeter is optional, not a requirement for setting resolution or refresh rate or enabling HDR. How do I turn on HDR for laptop games?

  1. Check Windows’ capability labels: Open Settings > System > Display, select the built-in screen and open its HDR settings. Confirm that Windows reports support for HDR games and apps. HDR video streaming support is a separate capability and does not, by itself, establish support for HDR games and apps. Use HDR in Windows
  2. Enable HDR for a capable display: If the games-and-apps capability is present, turn on HDR in that display’s Windows settings. Then check the HDR option inside a game that supports HDR; the game’s implementation affects the result.
  3. Calibrate for games if appropriate: On Windows 11, use the Windows HDR Calibration app on the intended HDR display. Run it full-screen and follow its test patterns rather than copying a brightness number from another screen. Calibrate your HDR display using the Windows HDR Calibration app

Microsoft’s HDR Calibration app uses three patterns recommended by the HDR Gaming Interest Group (HGIG): darkest visible details, brightest visible details and maximum display brightness. Adjust each control to the visibility boundary described by the app. Calibration can help make results more consistent; it is not a reason to push saturation until colors look artificial.

HDR game calibration is not HDR video calibration

For the built-in laptop display’s HDR streaming-video appearance, Windows has a separate Display calibration for HDR video feature. It is intended for video on built-in displays, not a replacement name for the HDR Calibration app’s game workflow. Microsoft guidance for HDR video display calibration

Acer Nitro 27in 4K 3840x2160 IPS 72Hz DFR 144Hz Gaming Monitor VG270K L1
  • Quality Visuals: The VG270K 27" IPS monitor with 3840 x 2160 UHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
  • AMD FreeSync Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provides the smoothest gaming experience.
  • Quick Refresh Rate: Different content has different refresh rate and resolution requirements. If you are playing an FPS or racing game, you will need a monitor with a high refresh rate. However, if you are doing office work or streaming videos, a higher resolution will be more beneficial. With DFR technology, users can choose a higher resolution, or a higher refresh rate based on what is suitable for them.
  • Responsive: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter if the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting
  • ZeroFrame Design: With a Nitro VG270K monitor, you’ll want to see as much of the display as possible. Get more real estate with the near bezel-less design, allowing you to see more and do more. The ZeroFrame design lets you place multiple monitors next to each other for a seamless, almost uninterrupted view.

Should I use Auto HDR?

Auto HDR in Windows 11 is optional. It can apply HDR presentation to supported older SDR games; it is not required for games that already support HDR. Compare the image with the feature on and off, since the result depends on the game. Auto HDR in Windows 11

HDR streaming video uses more battery when the laptop is unplugged. Microsoft’s HDR streaming guidance explains the relevant Windows behavior: Stream HDR video on Windows. Likewise, a high-performance GPU mode may be less suitable when battery life, low fan noise or cooler operation matters. Choose the mode for the current task rather than leaving a maximum-performance profile on by default.

Recheck settings after display changes

  • After changing resolution, GPU mode, display driver or power profile, reopen Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and confirm the intended refresh rate remains available and selected.
  • After adding or replacing a display or otherwise changing the display setup, rerun Windows HDR Calibration for the display you use for HDR games. Microsoft recommends recalibration after a display setup change. Windows HDR Calibration guidance
