Yes, fuel cells can generate electricity using research catalysts that avoid platinum-group metals (PGMs), but that does not mean platinum-free fuel-cell systems are a routine commercial option. Iron–nitrogen–carbon (Fe-N-C) catalysts have produced promising cell-level results, including a 2023 laboratory demonstration. Durability, electrode and membrane design, manufacturing scale, and system integration remain important hurdles—especially for vehicle use.
What does “without platinum” mean for a fuel cell?
Usually, it describes the catalyst, not the entire fuel-cell system. In particular, Fe-N-C catalysts—iron atoms coordinated with nitrogen in a carbon support—are a prominent research family designed to avoid PGMs in the oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode.

That distinction matters. A PGM-free cathode catalyst does not establish that every material in a complete cell or system is platinum-free, and a catalyst that performs well in one test is not, by itself, proof of a commercially ready stack. Researchers also investigate other PGM-free catalyst materials; the label should not be taken to mean that every such material has the same composition or performance.
How can a PGM-free catalyst make electricity?
A fuel cell converts the chemical energy of fuel and an oxidant into electricity through electrochemical reactions. In the PEM fuel-cell research discussed here, the cathode’s ORR is a major target for replacing PGM catalysts. Fe-N-C materials are studied as alternatives, but their activity is only one part of the result: the electrode must also let oxygen reach reaction sites, conduct electrons and protons, and manage water.

For that reason, performance depends on the assembled catalyst layer and cell—not just the catalyst powder. Modeling work on PGM-free PEM fuel-cell layers identifies catalyst loading, porosity, the density of active sites, and transport as factors in performance. Membrane and ionomer properties, operating conditions, and water management also matter.
Which fuel-cell approaches are being studied?
| Approach | Why it matters to PGM-free catalysts | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Acidic proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) | Fe-N-C catalysts are a prominent research direction for replacing PGM catalysts at the cathode ORR. | Activity, catalyst-layer transport, durability, and integration all affect complete-cell results; catalyst activity alone does not establish readiness. |
| Alkaline and anion-exchange membrane (AEM) fuel cells | Alkaline chemistry can provide conditions favorable to non-PGM catalysts. Fe-N-C gas-diffusion electrode performance is also affected by ionomer selection and catalyst-layer composition. | Membrane stability is a challenge. Organic cation groups in alkaline membranes can undergo chemical degradation, especially under dry conditions. |
These are research contexts, not a claim that one chemistry is universally better. A 2023 Journal of Power Sources study also examined an alkaline direct-methanol fuel cell using commercial PGM-free cathode materials; that fact alone does not establish a consumer product or a particular level of performance.

What has been demonstrated in a complete cell?
A 2023 Journal of Power Sources study reported gram-scale synthesis of a PGM-free Fe-N-C catalyst and tested membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs) with a 50 cm² active area. It reported a peak power density of 670 mW/cm² with hydrogen and air (H2-air).
This is evidence of a research-scale cell demonstration, not a commercial stack benchmark. The reported value belongs to that study’s MEA and test conditions; it should not be read as expected vehicle output or as proof of service life. Nor should it be compared directly with a result from a rotating-disk electrode, half-cell, short stack, or commercial system without accounting for the different test configuration.

What limits performance and lifetime?
Durability depends on operating and test conditions
A 2024 accelerated-stress study of Fe-based PGM-free cathodes reported different degradation rates when it changed temperature, the cycling upper-potential limit, and relative humidity. Within that study’s test context, the reported degradation rate was 65% lower when temperature was reduced from 85°C to 70°C, 41% lower when the upper potential limit was reduced from 0.925 V to 0.9 V, and 43% lower when relative humidity was reduced from 100% to 60%.
Those are test-specific comparisons, not service-life forecasts. They do not show how many years a fuel cell would last in a vehicle or other application. Accelerated-stress results depend on the protocol and the degradation metric, so they should be interpreted alongside the test conditions rather than treated as a universal durability figure.

The rest of the electrode and cell must work together
Oxygen, protons, electrons, and water all need suitable pathways through the catalyst layer. Loading, porosity, site density, and transport can affect how much of the catalyst is usable in operation. In alkaline systems, ionomer choice and catalyst-layer composition influence Fe-N-C gas-diffusion electrode performance, while membrane chemistry must remain stable in the operating environment. A strong result for catalyst material alone cannot resolve those cell-level design challenges.

Are platinum-free fuel cells commercially available for vehicles?
The evidence summarized here does not establish a routine consumer-ready PGM-free vehicle fuel-cell product. In its FY 2024 review, the U.S. Department of Energy reported that the PGM-free catalysts it reviewed remained far from light- and heavy-duty vehicle targets and identified durability, scale-up, and integration as concerns.

That is a qualification about vehicle readiness, not a claim that no PGM-free fuel-cell research, component, or demonstration exists. A laboratory MEA result and a commercial vehicle stack answer different questions: the latter requires performance and durability at relevant scale, as well as a membrane, electrodes, and system integration that work together.
How should you assess a claim about a “platinum-free” fuel cell?
Before comparing reported numbers or products, check what the claim actually covers and how the result was obtained:
- What is PGM-free? Check whether the description applies to the cathode catalyst, another component, or the complete system. Distinguish PGM-free materials from formulations that still use a smaller amount of PGM.
- What chemistry is involved? Note whether the result concerns an acidic PEMFC or an alkaline/AEM fuel cell; the membrane and electrode requirements differ.
- What was tested? Identify whether the evidence is from a catalyst half-cell, gas-diffusion electrode, MEA, short stack, or full commercial system. Do not treat these as interchangeable.
- Under what conditions? Look for cell area, fuel and oxidant, pressure, temperature, humidity, catalyst loading, and the reported performance metric.
- What does the durability test measure? Check the hold or cycling protocol, voltage limits, temperature, humidity, duration, and degradation metric. A change in an accelerated test is not automatically a prediction of service life.
- Is the whole system addressed? Look for information on membrane and ionomer stability, catalyst-layer transport, water management, manufacturing scale, and integration—not only catalyst activity.
Do electrolyzer results show that a fuel cell works without platinum?
No. An electrolyzer uses electricity to drive a chemical reaction; a fuel cell generates electricity from electrochemical reactions. The DOE FY 2024 report also describes a PGM-free AEM electrolysis-cell result above 2.4 A/cm² at 2.0 V. That is an electrolyzer result, not a fuel-cell output figure, so it cannot be used as evidence of fuel-cell power or commercial readiness.
