Real Body Fat estimates body-fat percentage, lean mass and fat mass from a full-body photo plus age, height and weight. Its founder, Divyanshu Singh, says the image is analyzed once and discarded. That privacy promise shaped the service’s architecture—but it is the founder’s account, not an independently audited finding.
What the photo scan does
The current Real Body Fat product page describes a scan that takes a front-facing, full-body photo and the user’s age, height and weight. It returns estimated body-fat percentage, lean mass and fat mass in roughly ten seconds. The page recommends fitted clothing, even lighting, standing six to ten feet from the camera, and holding the arms slightly away from the body.

These are estimates generated from an image and entered measurements, not direct measurements of body composition. The service describes the result as directional rather than clinical.

In a build article dated September 13, 2026, Singh describes an Astro frontend running on Cloudflare Workers, with a React island handling the scan. In his account, a Worker passes the photo to a vision model; the image is not persisted at either end. He says the service does not store the photo or use it for training.

Singh also describes keeping persistent state to credit balances rather than creating a conventional user-account database. Durable Objects hold credit wallets. The product’s stated business model gives casual users a free daily scan and sells additional use as one-time credits that do not expire; the product page listed credit packs from $5 when checked October 7, 2026. These details describe the founder’s implementation and the product page at those dates, not a guarantee of current availability or pricing.
The founder identifies the wallet flow as the difficult implementation trade-off: credit balances needed to persist without introducing user accounts. The account helps explain the product’s design choices, but it does not establish how every part of the deployed system behaves.

What the privacy promise establishes—and what it does not
The service says the submitted photo is analyzed once and discarded, is not stored, and is not seen by a person. Those are consequential claims, and they should be read as the service’s stated practices. The available account does not independently verify the complete data path, including provider retention settings, logs, runtime configuration or other infrastructure. It is not an independent security or privacy audit.

How much confidence to place in the estimate
Real Body Fat does not publish a single accuracy figure on its current product page and says the scan is not a medical, clinical or DEXA-grade measurement. Singh describes the result as directional and says it is weakest for very lean or very muscular bodies. No independent validation of this particular photo model is established in the materials reviewed.
In his 2026 build article, Singh gives a directional estimate of two to three percentage points from DEXA. That is the founder’s characterization, not an independently established error range for this model; the product page itself does not present one accuracy figure. It should not be used as a guaranteed margin of error.

Lighting, posture, clothing and individual fat distribution can affect photo-based estimates. Results are most useful as a rough trend when you use the same method and similar conditions over time—not as a definitive reading from one scan. Singh’s advice is to “pick one method and track the trend over weeks, not to trust any single reading.”

When a tape measure may suit you better
If you would rather not upload a photo, the product page offers a free U.S. Navy circumference calculator. It asks for height, neck and waist measurements. A soft body measuring tape is an optional tool for taking those measurements; it is not needed for the photo scan.

Neither a photo estimate nor a circumference calculator is interchangeable with a clinical assessment. Real Body Fat’s own guidance identifies DEXA as the more precise option for a clinical or one-off baseline. Choose the method that fits your purpose, then keep the method and measurement conditions consistent if you are following a fitness trend.
