FTP Banner Command Retrieval: How E4del and PINHOLE Use Server Greetings

A disguised Windows shortcut can read commands from an FTP greeting and start a malware delivery chain. E4del and PINHOLE share that technique but diverge in packaging, configuration, and behavior.

Attackers can use an FTP server’s pre-login greeting as a remotely changeable source of commands. In the reported activity, a disguised Windows shortcut connects to an attacker-controlled FTP server, reads its banner, and uses the returned instruction to start one of two distinct malware chains: E4del or PINHOLE. Receiving the ZIP archive is not itself proof that the shortcut ran.

How an FTP banner becomes a command source

FTP normally sends a server greeting before the client authenticates. SOCRadar’s findings, summarized by BleepingComputer and Gridinsoft, describe a malicious Windows shortcut connecting to an attacker-controlled FTP server and retrieving a PowerShell script or command from that greeting.

The banner functions as a dead-drop resolver: the shortcut can obtain its next instruction from the server rather than carrying every command locally. Operators can change what the server returns without rebuilding the original lure. In the observed chain, the returned instruction starts a delivery path that eventually installs E4del or PINHOLE.

Observed infection sequence

  1. A ZIP archive arrives, reportedly through a likely phishing route. The initial route was not fully reconstructed, so phishing is an assessment rather than a confirmed explanation for every delivery.
  2. The archive contains a Windows .lnk shortcut disguised to look like another kind of file.
  3. If the user runs the shortcut, it connects to an attacker-controlled FTP server and reads the server greeting.
  4. The shortcut uses the banner-sourced command to launch PowerShell or another delivery stage.
  5. The later stages lead to either E4del or PINHOLE; the payloads are separate clusters, not alternate names for one RAT.

RST Cloud’s September 10, 2026 field guide describes additional observed patterns: FTP output passed into an interpreter, a WebDAV-based second stage, and a BITS-based download-and-execute variant. These are documented variants, not steps that should be assumed to occur together in every infection.

What distinguishes E4del from PINHOLE

Both payload clusters share the FTP-banner command-retrieval approach, but the reported packaging, configuration methods, and later-stage behaviors differ.

Comparison E4del PINHOLE
Packaging and execution Node.js RAT bundled in a modified Electron application. The package includes a legitimately signed Discord host executable, while application logic inside the bundle is replaced. Multi-stage Windows RAT; researchers report process injection in its later activity.
Command and control Gridinsoft describes encrypted HTTP reporting. Can retrieve C2 configuration from Pinterest pins or SurveyMonkey questions, then proxy traffic through a Cloudflare Worker.
Reported capabilities Interactive shells, screenshots, desktop streaming, and downloading and executing additional payloads. Process and file management, file transfer, screenshots, command execution, and a browser-credential-stealing module reported by researchers.
Notable investigation leads Inspect the entire Electron application directory and app.asar; a valid signature on the Discord executable does not validate the rest of the directory. Reported leads include a registry Load value under HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWindows, random directories under %LOCALAPPDATA%Packages, and alternate data streams attached to desktop.ini.

Researchers found a privilege-escalation code path in E4del associated with crypto32.node, but the module was unavailable for direct analysis. The browser-credential-stealing module attributed to PINHOLE likewise was not recovered for direct analysis; treat those capabilities as reported findings, not independently verified behavior of every sample.

SOCRadar’s reported PINHOLE sample supported 14 commands, and its tasking script had 11 execution events at analysis time. Those are counts for the observed sample and analysis, not measures of campaign prevalence or scale.

What defenders should look for

A single filename or signature is a weak basis for detecting this activity. Correlate network events with process creation and subsequent file or persistence changes.

Prioritize behavior chains

  • Rare outbound FTP from a workstation, especially outbound TCP port 21, followed shortly by PowerShell or another interpreter.
  • FTP activity followed by rundll32, BITS activity, WebDAV access, or an unexpected executable under a user profile.
  • An FTP exchange that consists of a banner read without normal authentication or file transfer. RST Cloud identifies this as structurally unlike an ordinary FTP workflow; use it as a hunting hypothesis and compare it with the organization’s expected FTP use and network policy.
  • Unexpected startup behavior or process ancestry consistent with a shortcut launching a script or secondary stage.

Inspect artifacts in context

  • For a suspected E4del infection, examine the complete Electron application directory, including app.asar, as well as startup behavior, process ancestry, and network activity. Do not treat the Discord executable’s valid signature as proof that the application bundle is trustworthy.
  • For suspected PINHOLE activity, review the reported registry value, random directories under the local Packages path, and alternate data streams on desktop.ini. These are investigation leads, not permanent or definitive indicators.
  • Validate indicators against current threat intelligence before using them as block rules; infrastructure and artifacts can change.

What to do if someone ran the shortcut

  1. Isolate the endpoint from the network and preserve the original message, ZIP archive, shortcut, and approximate execution time.
  2. Do not reopen or rerun the sample. Record relevant process, network, file, and persistence evidence for incident response.
  3. Investigate for secondary stages and persistence rather than removing only the shortcut or any visible application. Gridinsoft warns that later stages may remain after those obvious components are removed.
  4. From a clean device, reset credentials and revoke sessions that may have been exposed. Include browser sessions and other credentials in scope if the incident evidence warrants it.

Attribution and timeline: what the reports establish

The reports do not attribute the activity to a known threat actor. They also do not fully reconstruct how the initial ZIP was delivered, so the phishing route should remain qualified as likely.

BleepingComputer reports that MalwareHunterTeam observed the technique in July 2026 and quotes SOCRadar as saying it had been weaponized since early July, with new infrastructure observed as recently as August 2026. That statement describes the reporting period; it is not confirmation that the same infrastructure remains active today.
