A frozen screen does not, by itself, prove that someone has accessed your phone. In the documented UPI scam pattern, fraudsters impersonate support staff or use a KYC pretext to persuade people to install a screen-sharing app, grant remote access, or reveal financial credentials. That access or disclosure—not a proven “freeze exploit”—is what creates the risk.
How the scam works
Official advisories describe a social-engineering scam: the fraudster invents a problem, poses as someone who can fix it, and steers the victim into actions that expose the device or payment credentials.

- An unsolicited approach: Someone calls or messages claiming to represent a company, bank, or service provider. A KYC update or a technical problem may be the pretext.
- A request to install or open an app: The caller directs the person to a screen-sharing or remote-viewing app and asks them to start a session or accept access.
- Device activity becomes visible: Depending on the app and permissions, the other person may watch the phone or computer, and some sessions may also allow control. CERT-In describes scammers prompting users to enter card, bank, UPI PIN, or OTP details while the device is visible. The RBI Ombudsman guide warns that exposed credentials can be used to make unauthorised payments.
- Money or credentials are put at risk: The scammer may observe information as it is entered, or persuade the victim to disclose it directly. Delhi Police describes a KYC-themed version involving an impersonator and accepted remote viewing.
CERT-In’s Advisory CIAD-2020-0003, issued January 30, 2020, puts the impersonation plainly: “The scammer poses as representatives of companies and pretends to solve issues being faced by the victim.” Read the CERT-In advisory.

What “frozen screen” does—and does not—mean
A screen that freezes can be alarming, but the official materials cited here do not establish that a frozen screen itself grants access, reveals a UPI PIN, or represents a distinct technical exploit. A freeze may happen during an incident, but it is not proof of the cause. The documented risk comes from actions such as installing an untrusted app, granting remote viewing or control, or divulging an OTP or payment credential.

Do not assume that restarting the phone alone resolves a possible exposure. If you accepted remote access or entered financial details while someone was watching, treat that as a security incident and take the steps below.

How to stay safe
Decline unexpected remote-access requests
- Do not install an unfamiliar app or accept screen-sharing access because an unsolicited caller or message tells you to.
- End the conversation and contact the company through contact details on its official website. Do not rely on a number or link supplied by the caller or message.
- Google Pay Help says, “Google Pay never asks you to download or install a third-party app for any reason.” It also advises closing screen-sharing apps before using Google Pay because a session may expose OTPs or card details. Google Pay’s screen-sharing safety guidance.
Protect payment credentials
- Never tell anyone your UPI PIN or OTP, including someone claiming to be support staff.
- If remote support is genuinely necessary, the RBI Ombudsman guide advises logging out of payment apps first, contacting the company using its official toll-free number, and removing the screen-sharing app when the support work is finished. RBI Ombudsman consumer guide.
If you granted access or suspect a payment scam
- End the session. Disconnect remote access and close the app. Remove an app you installed for the session once it is no longer needed. If you cannot end access confidently, use another trusted device to contact your bank or payment service.
- Contact your bank or payment service promptly. Use a verified channel, such as the number on the bank’s official website or payment card. Explain whether you granted access, shared credentials, or see an unauthorised transaction; ask what protective steps are available.
- Preserve evidence. Keep messages, call details, app information, screenshots, and transaction records. Delhi Police advises collecting screenshots and transaction evidence.
- Report through official channels. Bank of India’s 2024 cyber-safety material lists cybercrime.gov.in and 1930 for reporting. Check the current instructions on the official portal and report promptly; do not treat a report as a guarantee that funds will be recovered. Recognise the route to exposure
