Brad Buxer said he and Michael Jackson composed music for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in 1993, but Buxer’s account does not establish which tracks made it into the 1994 game. He said Jackson was unhappy with the sound produced by the console; a former Sega executive gave a different explanation for why the collaboration ended. Sega had not officially confirmed Jackson’s involvement, according to The Guardian’s 2009 report.
Did Michael Jackson write music for Sonic 3?
Composer Brad Buxer said he and Jackson worked on music for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. In an interview reproduced by TechCrunch on December 3, 2009, Buxer said Jackson had called him for help on the project. Buxer also said he had never played the game and did not know which of the tracks they worked on developers retained. His account supports saying they composed music for the game, not that Jackson secretly wrote the entire soundtrack.

Why was Jackson not credited?
Buxer attributed Jackson’s lack of a credit to dissatisfaction with the audio. He said Jackson was frustrated that the console could not reproduce the music optimally and did not want to be associated with a product that made it sound worse. This is Buxer’s explanation, not an official statement from Sega.

Roger Hector, a former Sega executive, offered a different account: he said Sega backed away from the collaboration after the 1993 allegations against Jackson. The Guardian reported in 2009 that Sega had not officially confirmed Jackson’s involvement. The available accounts therefore do not establish a single settled reason for the missing credit.
Did Sonic 3 music become “Stranger in Moscow”?
Buxer said chords he and Jackson composed for the game were later used as a basis for Jackson’s song “Stranger in Moscow.” That statement describes a connection involving chords; it does not identify which Sonic 3 tracks Jackson composed or prove that a specific finished game track became the song.

Was Sonic 3’s music changed in Sonic Origins?
Yes. GameSpot reported that Sonic Origins used recreated tracks for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 rather than the original game soundtrack. In 2022, co-creator Yuji Naka posted about the music changing, but GameSpot later updated its report to say Naka felt misunderstood and was not confirming Jackson’s involvement.

Sega’s Sonic Origins Plus physical edition for Nintendo Switch includes Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It is a modern collection rather than the original 1994 release, and its Sonic 3 music differs from the original soundtrack.
