An AI-assisted video project works best as an editorial workflow, not a sequence of prompts: define the deliverable, plan the story, use generation where it helps, then assemble and review an editable cut before export. The steps below apply across tools; individual features, availability, and limits change.
1. Define the brief and delivery target
Before generating anything, write down what the finished video must do. A clear target helps determine the script, shot choices, and export settings.

- Audience and purpose: Who is watching, and what should they understand, feel, or do?
- Runtime and destination: Set a target length and identify where the video will be published or shown.
- Format: Choose an aspect ratio and other delivery requirements from the destination’s current specifications rather than assuming one preset fits every platform.
- Tone and constraints: Note the intended style, factual claims that need verification, and any brand or production requirements.
These are planning decisions, not a universal standard. They make later creative choices more concrete.

Decide the point of the video before writing prompts. Draft narration or dialogue, then divide it into scenes and shots. For each shot, note its purpose, what the viewer should see, and how it connects to the next moment. A storyboard or reference images can help when the look or continuity matters.

Runway describes an Agent that can help develop scripts and narrative structure and create storyboards and reference sheets. Treat those outputs as planning material to review and revise, not as a finished creative decision. Runway’s guide to creating with its Agent explains its documented workflow.
3. Decide where AI helps—and where it does not
Choose the method shot by shot. A generated clip may suit a visual that is difficult to film, while original footage, licensed media, or conventional editing may be a better fit for a specific person, product, event, or detail that must be accurate.
- Text-to-video: Useful when you are starting with a written visual idea and need a new shot.
- Image-to-video: Useful when you have a still image whose composition or appearance should guide the generated motion.
- Existing footage: Some tools support editing or working from uploaded clips, which can help when the project already has filmed material.
- Timeline generation: Some editors describe generating media directly in a sequence, alongside existing clips.
Runway’s product page describes starting from a prompt, image, or clip, then refining, extending, upscaling, and exporting results. Adobe’s Premiere documentation describes beta features for generating video or sound effects in a timeline. These are vendor-documented capabilities, not an independent quality ranking; confirm current features and availability before choosing a tool. 4. Generate selectively and iterate
Generate only the material that advances a scene. Make candidates, inspect them against the brief and storyboard, and revise prompts or references when a result misses the intended action, framing, or tone. Keep the useful takes and discard the rest.
Prompt emphasis depends on the input. Runway’s guide recommends describing the desired motion for image-to-video; for text-to-video, prompts generally need to establish both the visual content and its motion. Its documentation also cautions that results can contain mistakes and may need iteration. Runway’s generative video guide provides its current instructions. Product lineups and model capabilities change, so avoid treating a model name or ranking as permanent.
5. Organize the material and build an editable cut
Keep project media easy to locate. Use a consistent structure for source footage, generated clips, narration, music, graphics, and project files, and give versions clear names. Then assemble the selected material in a timeline: establish the sequence, adjust pacing, and check how each shot connects to the next.

AI can assist with organization or a first assembly, but the result should remain something you can inspect and change. Adobe’s Premiere AI Assistant FAQ, last updated June 18, 2026, labels the features beta and describes organizing project material, processing transcripts, and assembling a stringout or first cut as an editable sequence. Watch the assembled video as a viewer, not just as a collection of generated shots. Check the story’s clarity and the transitions between scenes, then inspect details that can be easy to overlook during generation.
- Look for visual artifacts, unwanted changes in a subject, or continuity breaks.
- Verify on-screen text, captions, names, and factual claims.
- Listen for intelligible dialogue, appropriate music levels, and abrupt audio changes.
- Consider whether generated imagery could mislead viewers about a real person, place, or event.
- Make revisions in the timeline and review the revised cut again.
Generation is an input to editorial review, not a guarantee of accuracy. The final cut is the creator’s responsibility.

7. Check permissions, disclosure, and destination settings
Track rights and permissions
Keep a record of where footage, images, music, voices, and likenesses came from and what permissions apply to their use. The question of whether your own contribution can be protected by copyright is separate from whether you had permission to use third-party material.
The U.S. Copyright Office said in a May 2025 notice that AI assistance or AI-generated material within a larger human-created work does not, by itself, prevent copyrightability. That qualified U.S. statement does not clear source material, voices, or likenesses for use. For a commercial project or a different jurisdiction, get advice appropriate to the circumstances. Follow the platform’s AI disclosure rules
YouTube requires disclosure in specified cases involving realistic AI-generated or meaningfully altered content—for example, making a real person appear to say or do something they did not, altering footage of a real event or place, or creating a realistic scene that did not happen. Its guidance distinguishes those cases from production assistance such as generating ideas, outlines, scripts, or captions. Check the current policy and upload flow for the specific video. YouTube’s guidance on disclosing GenAI content.

Export for the actual destination
Use the platform’s current requirements for dimensions, aspect ratio, file format, and other delivery settings. Requirements can differ by destination and change over time; there is no single export preset established here as correct for every project.
No independent, directly comparable statistic in the cited official materials establishes how much an AI-assisted workflow saves in time or cost, or how much it improves quality. Choose tools by the inputs they accept, the control they offer over motion and continuity, how easily results can be revised in an editable timeline, and whether their current availability and limits suit the project.
