In her DEV Community article From HTML to JavaScript: My Learning Journey, aspiring web developer and tech writer Fatma Salim describes starting with HTML, moving into CSS, and then beginning JavaScript. Her account is one learner’s reflection, not a timetable or a rule for everyone.
What changes as you move from HTML to JavaScript?
The three technologies have different jobs, which is why learning them through a small project can make their relationship easier to see:

- HTML describes the content and structure of a page: headings, paragraphs, links, images, and other elements.
- CSS controls how that content is presented, including styling and layout.
- JavaScript can add dynamic behavior, such as responding to a click or updating content.
MDN’s learning materials follow a comparable route, with material on HTML, CSS styling, CSS layout, and JavaScript. That sequence is a useful starting point, not a requirement to master one subject completely before touching the next. A project may lead you back and forth between structure, presentation, and behavior. Explore MDN’s web development learning materials.
A practical way to begin
Rather than trying to absorb all of web development at once, make one small page and add to it in stages. This is a practical learning suggestion, not a fixed curriculum.
#1 Best Overall
- Build the content with HTML. Make a simple page with a title, a few sections, and links or other relevant content. Focus first on what each piece is and how the page is organized.
- Style it with CSS. Add visual choices and layout. Notice that CSS changes presentation while the HTML continues to describe the content.
- Add one JavaScript interaction. Choose a small behavior, such as showing or changing a message when a user clicks a button. Keep the interaction limited enough to understand what triggers it and what changes.
- Revisit the earlier pieces. As the project grows, adjust the structure, styling, or behavior where needed. The technologies work together, even though they serve distinct roles.
Free and optional learning resources
MDN provides a structured, free route through HTML, CSS styling, CSS layout, and JavaScript. It is documentation-led and self-directed, so learners may want to pair reading with practice and find a way to get feedback on their work. MDN’s page also links to a partner video course; that listing alone does not establish the course’s current terms or availability.
Other formats may suit different learners. Compare the actual course or book on cost, currency, format, exercises, and feedback rather than assuming that a particular format is best.
| Option | What is established | Consider when choosing |
|---|---|---|
| MDN learning modules | Modules cover HTML, CSS styling, CSS layout, and JavaScript; the learning material is available free. MDN learning materials | Self-directed reading and practice; plan how you will get feedback. |
| LinkedIn Learning path listing | Class Central lists a path progressing from HTML and CSS to JavaScript. This is a third-party catalog listing, not direct confirmation of current course terms. Class Central’s web-development catalog | Check the current catalog, pricing, sequence, exercises, and feedback options. |
| Learning Web Design, 5th Edition | O’Reilly lists Jennifer Niederst Robbins’s beginner book, published in May 2018, at 808 pages. Its coverage includes how the web works, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and web images. O’Reilly’s book page | Consider whether a broad print or digital reference suits you, and whether its edition and cost fit your needs. |
What one learner’s account can—and cannot—tell you
Salim’s article is presented as a personal beginner reflection: she began with HTML, expanded to CSS, and then started JavaScript. The search-result excerpt reports that HTML helped her structure pages and CSS showed her that web development also involves presentation and user experience. Those observations describe her experience; they do not establish how quickly another learner will progress or what every beginner will feel.
The excerpt attributes this line to Salim: “Although I am still a beginner, the journey has been exciting and rewarding.” It appears in her DEV Community article, From HTML to JavaScript: My Learning Journey. Because the full article text was not available for verification, treat the wording as attributed in the excerpt rather than as an independently checked quotation. No reliable timeline for learning these technologies is established by the sources cited here.

How to choose your next step
- Choose MDN if you want free, self-directed learning material organized by topic.
- Consider a video path if guided lessons are a better fit, but verify its current availability, cost, and practice or feedback features.
- Consider a book if you prefer a broad reference you can read away from a course platform; check the edition and publication date before buying.
- Whichever format you choose, use a small project to connect HTML structure, CSS presentation, and JavaScript behavior.
