Apache Trusted Releases (ATR) is the Apache Software Foundation’s effort to make recurring release work more repeatable: it supports preparing artifacts, checking release details and handling votes while allowing projects to adopt it at their own pace. The ASF describes ATR as live and says it has helped bring SBOM information across releases to “near complete coverage,” though it publishes no exact rate or measurement method.
What release work is ATR meant to reduce?
A release manager must coordinate more than a build. They assemble source artifacts, verify metadata and compliance details, and guide a public community vote. Some checks and steps can depend on local knowledge of a project’s habits and release rules. ATR, part of the ASF Tooling Initiative, aims to turn parts of that process into repeatable checks and workflow support across independently governed Apache projects.

The ASF’s August 11, 2026 article describes ATR as live. Its intended benefit is not to remove project governance or the release manager’s responsibility, but to reduce routine work and make release steps easier to follow.

An ASF update published October 20, 2025, during ATR’s alpha period, described three phases. These are a dated account of the platform’s design and capabilities at that time; consult the current ATR site for implementation details and availability.

Compose: prepare and check a candidate
Compose was described as the place to assemble release-candidate artifacts and run asynchronous checks. The named checks included signatures, checksums, licenses, notices and source headers. The post said checks could expand as requirements developed.
Vote: support the community decision
The 2025 description said ATR could send the vote email and tabulate votes automatically. Automating those administrative tasks does not eliminate the community’s vote or its 72-hour period: the post discussed making that process easier to automate, not shortening or bypassing it.

The same alpha update listed future beta goals: tracking and checking build-produced SBOMs during Compose, integrating with a newer Nexus repository service, adding release attestations during Finish and creating a release catalog. Those were goals stated in 2025, not confirmation that each feature is available now.

Can projects keep their existing release habits?
The ASF presents flexibility as central to adoption. Its 2026 article says projects can work through familiar paths, including GitHub Actions and the command line, rather than being required to share one surface workflow. That makes gradual adoption possible: a project can begin with a part of the process that helps it and expand as it chooses.
“It didn’t feel like we were being asked to change how we work: the system starts by helping us on the vote, then expands progressively at each project’s own pace.”

Integration still depends on a project’s release practices and requirements. ATR is not evidence that every project has adopted it or that all release checks can be automated.
What does the ASF report about SBOM completeness?
The ASF’s August 2026 article says ATR automatically checks and flags missing SBOM information during release work. It reports that “thousands of missing SBOM fields”—including required package components and metadata—were reduced to “near complete coverage across releases.” The article does not give a release count, baseline or final percentage, measurement window, or evaluation method, so the claim should be read as the ASF’s qualitative account, not a quantified or independently verified result.

What other ASF tools reduce contributor friction?
ATR is distinct from ASF Infrastructure’s Self-serve Portal and from mailing-list configuration. These address other kinds of routine coordination, and access varies by service.
Self-service for common account and project requests
The Self-serve Portal lets users request resources or manage eligible existing ones without engaging the Infrastructure team. Its landing page says PMCs can create Jira projects, Git repositories and mailing lists and manage other project resources. Committers can manage identity-related functions. Contributors and other users with a working email address can request or reactivate Jira and Confluence accounts. These are portal services, not ATR features.
Less noise on project mailing lists
Apache Community Development’s mailing-list guidance describes how automated messages from GitHub, issue trackers and CI systems can produce a wall of identical subject lines, making lists harder for newcomers to follow. Project maintainers can use .asf.yaml to set notification destinations and customize subjects. The guidance also cautions against routing useful discussion to a list nobody reads: reducing noise should preserve access to meaningful project conversation.

The ASF’s August 2026 article points readers to ATR’s public documentation, open API and public source repositories. The October 2025 alpha update also listed the application, tutorial, API documentation, feature comparison, main repository, release client, GitHub Actions and examples. Because service endpoints and features can change, check the official ATR site for current links and status.
The Tooling update invited ASF members, committers and the public to contribute, and identified [email protected] as a discussion channel. The Tooling team page describes a group of paid senior-engineer contractors and volunteers and invites volunteers to contribute at an effort level that suits them.
