AI can help microalgae researchers monitor changing cultures and adjust operating conditions, but it has not solved industrial-scale production. One reported outdoor test used reinforcement learning to control carbon dioxide injection and regulate pH in an 80 m² open raceway for eight days. That is a specific demonstration—not evidence of routine commercial performance, long-term reliability or viable production economics.
Why growing microalgae is difficult to control
Microalgae use photosynthesis to convert light and carbon dioxide into organic compounds. They are studied as sources of food ingredients, animal feed, pigments and renewable fuels. Producing them consistently means managing biology and equipment together: light, temperature, pH, oxygen and carbon dioxide supply all affect the culture.

Those conditions interact. Too little light can limit photosynthesis; too much can cause photoinhibition. As biomass grows, cells can shade one another. Aeration may affect carbon dioxide availability, oxygen removal and pH at the same time. Adjusting one variable without accounting for the others can therefore produce unintended effects.
How AI can support cultivation
Finding patterns in sensor data
Sensors can track conditions such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, light and carbon dioxide. Machine-learning models can analyze combinations of readings to estimate growth, identify patterns associated with stress and help operators decide when to adjust a process. The usefulness of those predictions depends on accurate measurements and sound process engineering.

If you need any help, our US based ZestiGreens team would love to help you as we want you to love growing your own nutrition as much as we do. We help if you are unhappy for any reason. That peace of mind makes this the perfect gardening gift for adults and kids!
Estimating culture density from images
Image-based methods are also being studied to estimate biomass or culture density, potentially reducing reliance on manual sampling alone. Combining image and sensor data may help researchers notice changes in a culture’s condition, but it should be treated as a monitoring opportunity—not a guaranteed early-warning system.
Supporting control decisions
AI can help operators interpret changing conditions and choose process adjustments. It does not remove the need to understand the cultivation system, check instruments or apply conventional engineering judgment. As researcher Amarnath Krishnamoorthy puts it, “AI should therefore be considered an additional tool for researchers and process operators rather than a replacement for conventional process engineering.” The Conversation article, republished by Phys.org, describes the research and the limits of this approach.

- THE PROFESSIONAL STANDARD (GUIL-LARD'S F/2): Don't guess with your fertilizer. Our solution is based on the scientifically proven Guillard's F/2 formula, containing all essential macronutrients, trace minerals, and vitamins (B1, B12, Biotin) for explosive algae growth.
- SILICATE-FREE & REEF SAFE: Brewed with pure, lab-grade ingredients. This formula is 100% silicate-free, so it won't trigger a diatom (brown algae) bloom in your display tank. It's completely safe for all reef inhabitants when used as directed.
- EASY TO USE FOR BEGINNERS: Includes clear, simple instructions. Just add 1mL per 1 Liter (or 2mL to a standard 2L pop bottle) of new saltwater, add your starter culture, and provide light. Shake well before each use.
What the outdoor raceway test demonstrated
The reported 2026 study took place in Almeria, southeastern Spain. Researchers used reinforcement learning to control carbon dioxide injection and regulate pH in an 80 m² open raceway—about 860 square feet—during an eight-day test under changing outdoor conditions. The system used measurements including temperature, sunlight and dissolved oxygen, and the report says the controller responded to changing operating conditions.

- Complete starter kit for growing glowing microalgae (PyroDinos). Everything you need in one kit. PyroDino Algae produce natural blue light at night when swirled.
- PyroDinos are marine microalgae (phytoplankton), safe (non-toxic), and easy to care for. PyroDinos can be grown and added to new containers, saltwater tanks, glass vases and jars.
- PyroDinos require daily light (like a plant) and moderate temperatures. Temperature range: 9C to 31C (48F to 88F). The Programmable LED Grow Light can be the sole or supplemental light source.
- These microalgae exhibit a circadian cycle, photosynthesis, produce oxygen, sequester CO2, and are the basis of the ocean food web.
- Kit includes everything required: 1000ml polycarbonate Grow Flask, Programmable LED Grow Light, 2x PyroDinos, DinoNutrients and detailed Instructions.
Why cultivation systems and strains matter
Open raceways
An open raceway is a shallow outdoor channel where culture circulates, typically using a paddlewheel. Conditions outdoors can change during operation, as they did during the reported test.
Photobioreactors
Photobioreactors are a different type of cultivation system. Their geometry and operating conditions are not interchangeable with those of open raceways, so a model developed for one system should not be assumed to work equally well in another.

Microalgae strains also respond differently to cultivation conditions. A model trained or tuned for one strain or reactor may perform differently with another; reliable use therefore requires checking its performance in the intended setup.

What still limits AI-guided algae cultivation
- Sensor fouling and drift: Sensors can become dirty or measurements can shift over time, undermining the data models rely on.
- Different biological responses: Strains may react differently to light, temperature and other operating conditions.
- Transfer between systems: A model that works in one reactor design may not transfer to another without validation.
- Limited evidence for routine large-scale operation: Krishnamoorthy reports that much of the production he has examined remains at laboratory or small-pilot scale, although AI-based control has also been tested in some larger outdoor systems.
The practical lesson is that AI can help researchers and operators make sense of complex measurements and support control, but it cannot compensate for poor data or replace process engineering. The Almeria test is a promising example of outdoor control, not proof that the broader challenge of producing microalgae reliably at industrial scale has been solved.
