Panmure Liberum analysts Joachim Klement and Francisca Reis say an AI-sector downturn could pull the S&P 500 down to 5,000 by the end of 2027. That is a conditional forecast, not a prediction that the decline is certain. In their view, upcoming earnings and guidance will test whether hyperscalers’ AI spending can meet investors’ expectations—and whether that spending is becoming a risk to the broader market.
What the 5,000 forecast means
MarketWatch reported on October 5, 2026, that Klement and Reis see a possible path to 5,000 for the S&P 500 if the AI sector turns down. Klement also said he thought the AI bubble could pop in 2027 or 2028. MarketWatch described the 5,000 scenario as implying a potential decline of about 35%. Why AI spending creates a market dilemma
The concern is not simply that hyperscalers might spend too much or too little. Klement’s argument, as reported by MarketWatch, is that either outcome could unsettle investors. A sharp rise in capital expenditure could weigh on the shares of large companies that carry substantial index weight. But if spending falls materially short of elevated expectations, investors may question the outlook for chipmakers and data-center equipment suppliers.

What earnings and guidance could reveal
Klement called the coming reporting cycle a test: “But the upcoming Q3 earnings season and then the full-year earnings and guidance for 2027 in January will provide a critical reality check.” The figures and management outlooks could help investors judge whether companies are converting AI investment into business results and whether planned spending remains on track.
One market estimate cited secondhand in the MarketWatch report is Goldman Sachs’s forecast of $1.2 trillion in hyperscaler capital expenditure in 2027. That utility distinction matters to the thesis: exposure to infrastructure is not presented as interchangeable with a utility whose valuation already reflects expectations of rising AI power demand. MarketWatch also cited SpotGamma’s report of more than 400,000 XLU call contracts trading in a recent session, which it described as one of the ETF’s largest call-volume sessions in two years. How to read the trade ideas
The reported positioning is best understood as a set of areas to consider under a particular market scenario, not a ready-made portfolio. The article offers no entry prices, allocation sizes, named securities, or evidence that these sectors would necessarily rise if AI shares fell. Sector exposure can still carry company-specific and broader market risks, and bonds could become more attractive only if a decline leads investors to seek havens.
Klement described markets as resilient despite mounting obstacles, while also saying: “I think the entire bubble will pop either in 2027 or 2028.” The tension between those statements captures the uncertainty: resilience so far does not rule out a future correction, but a forecast of one does not make it inevitable.
