The team’s reported fix was to render only the visible rows and a small buffer around them. In the authors’ local Chrome DevTools test, using a mobile viewport and 4× CPU slowdown, the reported INP fell from 1,256 ms to 96 ms. Those figures describe this case study, not a result guaranteed for every list or device.
Why opening the Brand filter was slow
Subito used a shared custom MultiSelect described as a reskinned react-select component. Filters with around a dozen choices worked acceptably, but the Brand filter on a Shoes category page contained around 1,175 options. Its menu viewport showed only about six rows at a time.

According to the case-study authors, opening the unvirtualized menu synchronously created all 1,175 Option components, including each label and custom checkbox, before the browser could paint the open menu. That work formed a large processing block during an interaction the user expected to feel immediate. The authors’ diagnosis is specific to their implementation; Google notes more generally that large DOMs can make rendering updates more expensive and delay presentation of the next frame.

What the INP numbers mean
Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures the time from a qualifying user interaction until the browser can present the next frame. It accounts for input delay before event handlers begin, processing time while callbacks run, and presentation delay before the frame appears. Clicks, taps, and keyboard interactions can contribute; a page’s INP reflects responsiveness across a visit.

Google web.dev classifies INP of 200 ms or less as good, over 200 ms through 500 ms as needing improvement, and above 500 ms as poor. Those thresholds are assessed at the 75th percentile of page loads, segmented by mobile and desktop. See Google’s INP guidance.
How windowing reduced the work
Rather than mounting every option, the team reported implementing a custom useVirtualScroll hook. It measured one rendered option’s height after mount, calculated the total list height, and used the scroll position to identify which rows should currently be rendered. A spacer preserved the apparent height of the full list, while only the visible slice and a five-item overscan buffer were mounted as option elements. This lets the user scroll through the full list without keeping every option in the DOM.

The authors report that their local INP reading changed from 1,256 ms before the fix to 96 ms afterward, with 13 rendered [role="option"] nodes after the change. Both readings came from their Chrome DevTools setup with a simulated mobile viewport and 4× CPU slowdown. The case study does not state the exact handset model, browser version, sample or repeat count, or full protocol; it is a useful illustration, not an independent replication or field-wide result. The before-and-after comparison is in the Subito case study.
When fixed-height windowing is appropriate
The simple index arithmetic in this approach depends on rows having a consistent height. If labels wrap, group headers take extra space, or layout changes after a font loads, device rotation, or viewport resize, the estimated positions can drift. That can create gaps or overlap and make some options difficult or impossible to reach.

Choose an implementation based on the shape of the list:
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed-height rows with index arithmetic | A list whose rows remain uniformly sized across supported layouts. | Can be a compact implementation, but variable heights or layout changes undermine position accuracy. |
| Measured variable-height rows | Lists with wrapped labels, group headers, or content that changes row height. | Requires measuring rows and maintaining those measurements as content and layout change. |
These are implementation trade-offs, not a benchmark: the Subito article does not report a head-to-head performance comparison. For a uniform list, a small custom window may be sufficient; for variable-height content, use row measurement or a virtualization library designed to handle it. Another option is to keep rows uniform where the product design allows it.

Search and interaction behavior to check
Windowing means off-screen options are absent from the DOM. The Subito authors note that browser-native Ctrl+F therefore cannot find an option that has not been rendered. If users need to locate a brand by name, provide a custom search that searches the full option data and brings a match into view; do not rely on the browser’s find feature as the only way to locate an unmounted row.
Before shipping a windowed dropdown, check that scrolling, keyboard navigation, selection, and search still operate across the entire data set—not just the rows currently mounted. Also test the supported widths and font-loading or resizing states so the rendered slice stays aligned with the scroll position.
