Why Amazon Blocked Meta’s Muse AI Agent—and What It Means for AI Shopping

Amazon blocked Meta’s Muse from shopping on Amazon.com in September 2026 after asking Meta to keep the agent out of the retailer’s experience. Amazon said Muse’s access was not disclosed or authorized and raised concerns about its browsing identity, account access and handling of transactions. Meta said Muse cannot see users’ passwords or payment methods. The public reporting reviewed here does not independently resolve the companies’ competing claims—or establish whether the block remains in effect today.

Why was Muse blocked on Amazon?

GeekWire reported that Amazon blocked Muse’s shopping access on the evening of September 20, 2026. Users encountered a notice saying continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violated Amazon’s Conditions of Use. Amazon had previously tried to get Meta to exclude Amazon from Muse’s experience.

Amazon’s stated objection was not simply that a user might ask Muse to shop. The company said it had not agreed to Muse’s access, Meta had not told it Muse would access the store, and Muse did not identify itself while browsing. Amazon also said the agent could reach account pages and order history when prompted. It framed these points as concerns about third-party access, transaction handling, customer security and the quality of the shopping experience. These are Amazon’s claims as reported by GeekWire, not independent findings of a security incident.

An Amazon spokesperson told GeekWire that third-party applications making purchases for customers should “operate openly and respect service provider decisions about whether or not to participate.” The statement reflects Amazon’s position on retailer control and disclosure; it does not establish that every retailer applies the same rules.

  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

What did Meta say about Muse’s safeguards?

Meta said Muse cannot see passwords or payment methods because credentials entered by users are held in secure storage. GeekWire also reported Meta’s description of a secure virtual machine, a dedicated browser and user confirmation before sensitive actions such as sending email or making a purchase. These are Meta’s descriptions of its system. The coverage reviewed here does not independently verify the credential protections or test how the confirmation safeguards work in practice.

Amazon’s concerns and Meta’s assurances address different parts of the issue: account and transaction risks on one hand, and how the agent handles credentials and sensitive actions on the other. Neither company’s account, on its own, settles the broader question of whether the arrangement was secure or acceptable to the retailer.

What was Muse, and how did it shop?

Meta launched Muse on September 8, 2026. The Associated Press reported that it was available in the United States to people aged 18 and older through its own app and WhatsApp, with help for tasks such as schedules, shopping, email and travel. AP described an agent that could open a browser, fill out forms and negotiate on a user’s behalf.

GeekWire reported that Muse could connect to services through public APIs when available and otherwise use a browser. It also described a separate system called Sentinel that must approve actions Muse sends to the internet. These details describe the product at launch; capabilities, safeguards and availability can change.

Does your permission let an AI agent shop on a retailer’s site?

Not necessarily. A user can authorize an agent to act for them, but the retailer may separately decide whether that agent can access its services and under what conditions. Amazon’s position in the Muse dispute was that an outside purchase agent should be open about its identity and respect a provider’s decision about participation. The dispute illustrates the difference between a customer’s instruction and a retailer’s permission.

Amazon’s position is also consistent with arguments it made in a separate 2025 dispute with Perplexity about its Comet agent. In an October 31, 2025 letter, Amazon argued that purchase agents should identify themselves, respect retailer decisions, and preserve customer security and shopping quality. That letter concerns Comet, not Muse, and is Amazon’s advocacy in a separate dispute—not a finding about Muse. Read Amazon’s letter to Perplexity.

What should you check before letting an AI agent shop?

Use these questions to assess a particular agent and merchant pairing. They are practical checks, not an official certification framework.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Merchant support: Does the retailer explicitly support or permit this agent? Do not assume that access to one store means access to another.
  • Identification: Does the agent identify itself to the service it is using?
  • Access requested: What account, payment, email or browser access does it need, and can you limit that access?
  • Confirmation gates: Which actions require your approval—especially purchases, checkout steps and messages?
  • Review and recourse: Can you inspect what the agent did, correct an error, contact support and seek a refund through the merchant’s usual process?

If you are unsure about an agent’s access or a merchant’s rules, shopping directly on the retailer’s site is a more straightforward option. GeekWire also mentioned Amazon’s own Alexa-based shopping assistant and “Buy for Me” feature as retailer-provided alternatives; check Amazon’s current availability and terms before relying on either.

  • KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE - Control compatible smart home devices. Just ask Alexa to turn on lights or touch the screen to dim. Create routines that use motion detection to turn down the thermostat as you head out or open the blinds when you walk into a room.

What does the block mean for AI shopping?

The episode shows that an AI agent’s ability to shop is not determined only by what the user asks it to do. A merchant can withhold access, and disputes can turn on disclosure, account access, transaction handling and control over the shopping experience. A successful purchase on one service would not show that another retailer permits the same agent.

Amazon and Meta also have other commercial ties: GeekWire reported that Amazon products had been purchasable inside Facebook and Instagram since 2023, and that Meta had made a multibillion-dollar deal to use Amazon Graviton chips for agentic workloads. That context does not establish why Amazon blocked Muse.

The reporting establishes a block as reported in September 2026, not its present-day status. Before using Muse to shop on Amazon, check whether Amazon currently permits the access and whether the agent itself says the retailer is supported.
