An American manicure is usually more understated: the tip is softer—often cream or off-white—and may blend into a natural-looking base. The names are not fixed technical standards, so the tip shade and degree of contrast are the clearest things to specify when booking.

These are common descriptions, not formal rules: salons and nail artists may use the names differently. An American-style finish can come from selecting a less intense tip color; another described technique paints the tip first, then applies sheer neutral polish over the entire nail to soften the boundary. How to do a French manicure at home
Regular nail polish
For a lacquer manicure, L’Oréal Paris’ guide recommends preparing the nails before adding the tip:
- Remove old polish and file the nails into the shape you want.
- Prepare the cuticles and apply base coat.
- Apply a pale or neutral shade as the base.
- Paint the white tip, using a fine line brush to create the crescent if needed.
Gel polish
OPI’s GelColor tutorial shows a brand-specific gel workflow: base coat, neutral GelColor, tip color, top coat, lamp curing, cleansing solution and cuticle oil. That is an example for gel products; regular lacquer does not require a gel lamp. Follow the instructions for the particular gel system you use.

How to make an American manicure at home
Start with a base close to your natural nail color and choose a cream or off-white tip instead of a stark, bright white. For a more blended edge, one described option is to paint the tip first and then apply a sheer neutral shade over the whole nail. This is one technique, not a universal requirement; the defining goal is a lower-contrast, natural-looking finish. Allure and Tsuki Nails describe the softer approach.
What to ask for at a salon
Describe the colors and contrast you want rather than relying on the name alone. For example, ask for “a sheer nude base with a crisp bright-white tip” for a French look, or “a softer cream tip blended into a natural pink” for an American-style look. A reference photo can help if the salon uses the terms differently. The labels do not establish one standard application or shade.
