FreeSync synchronizes a compatible monitor’s refresh timing with the frame rate coming from your graphics hardware. That can reduce screen tearing and stuttering. If your monitor, graphics device, driver and chosen input support it, enable FreeSync and check that it is active for the display you actually use.
What FreeSync does
A monitor normally refreshes at a set cadence, while a game’s frame rate can change from moment to moment. When those timings do not line up, a frame may be shown across two refreshes, creating a visible tear; uneven timing can also contribute to stutter. FreeSync is AMD’s variable-refresh technology: it lets a compatible display adjust its refresh timing to track the graphics device’s frame rate. AMD says the technology uses industry standards including DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync and HDMI Variable Refresh Rate. AMD’s FreeSync overview

FreeSync does not make a game render more frames or increase the monitor’s maximum refresh rate. It synchronizes within the variable-refresh range supported by the display and connection. If a game regularly produces more frames per second than the monitor can display, AMD recommends enabling V-Sync or capping the frame rate for a tear-free experience. AMD’s FreeSync overview
What the FreeSync tiers mean
AMD identifies three certification tiers: FreeSync, FreeSync Premium and FreeSync Premium Pro. The tier can help narrow a choice, but it does not replace checking the exact monitor’s specifications: refresh requirements vary by resolution, and a monitor’s usable variable-refresh range and port support are model-specific.

| Tier | AMD-listed features | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FreeSync | Tear-free experience, low latency and Low Framerate Compensation (LFC). | Confirm the model’s variable-refresh range, input support and GPU compatibility. |
| FreeSync Premium | Tear-free experience, low latency and LFC. | Check the model’s resolution and refresh-rate certification requirements; AMD’s product page lists at least 200 Hz maximum refresh below 3440 horizontal pixels and at least 120 Hz at 3440 pixels or wider. |
| FreeSync Premium Pro | Premium features plus AMD FreeSync HDR. | Check the exact model’s HDR capability and certification. AMD’s product page lists the same resolution-dependent refresh thresholds for Premium Pro as for Premium. |
AMD’s Adrenalin FAQ gives a more general summary for Premium and Premium Pro—at least 120 Hz at minimum FHD resolution, with Premium Pro adding HDR certification—while its product page lists resolution-dependent criteria. These summaries are not identical, so rely on the monitor’s exact certification and manufacturer specifications rather than applying one threshold to every display. Why LFC matters
Low Framerate Compensation helps when a game’s frame rate drops below the monitor’s minimum variable-refresh threshold. The graphics system repeats frames so the display can keep operating within its supported range. AMD’s example is a 60–144 Hz display: at 40 frames per second, it can repeat frames so the display refreshes at 80 Hz. AMD states that FreeSync Premium and Premium Pro displays are certified to meet mandatory LFC requirements. AMD’s FreeSync overview

Should you enable FreeSync?
Generally, yes, if the display and graphics setup support it. Turn it on in the monitor’s on-screen display if required, then verify its status in the graphics software. AMD says its software should automatically enable FreeSync on compatible systems with AMD graphics and certified displays. Some monitor color or media presets can switch FreeSync off, so check the monitor’s recommended settings and manual if the driver software does not report it as active. AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition FAQ
If a particular setup produces flickering, blanking or other unusual behavior, test with FreeSync disabled and consult the monitor’s manual or support information. Compatibility and settings vary, so an issue with one combination does not establish that FreeSync should be disabled on other displays.

How to turn it on and verify it
- Check the display and input. Confirm that the monitor, TV or laptop display supports FreeSync and identify the port in use. AMD supports the technology over DisplayPort and HDMI on certified displays, but capability can differ by model and input. AMD’s FreeSync overview
- Update the graphics driver. AMD lists a current graphics driver among the basic requirements for FreeSync. AMD’s FreeSync overview
- Enable the monitor setting if needed. Open the monitor’s on-screen display and look for FreeSync, Adaptive-Sync or a similarly named variable-refresh option. Menu names and locations differ, so follow the monitor’s manual. AMD’s FreeSync enablement FAQ
- For AMD graphics, check Adrenalin. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, go to Display, select the active monitor, and check the FreeSync status and tier. AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition FAQ
- For NVIDIA graphics, use NVIDIA Control Panel. Go to Display > Set up G-SYNC, select the variable-refresh display and configure G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible for fullscreen or windowed use as appropriate. AMD’s older setup FAQ mentions disabling Anti-Blur and setting DisplayPort to 1.2 or higher. Treat these as legacy, model-dependent suggestions—not universal requirements for current monitors or HDMI connections. AMD’s FreeSync enablement FAQ
What determines compatibility?
AMD lists three basic requirements: a FreeSync-capable display, a compatible GPU or APU, and a current graphics driver. Its product page says Radeon RX 200 Series and newer Radeon consumer products using GCN 2.0 architecture and later are compatible. AMD also says NVIDIA GeForce 10 Series and newer GPUs that support DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync are expected to work, while directing users to confirm support with the GPU manufacturer. Compatibility depends on the exact GPU, monitor, port and connection path. AMD’s FreeSync overview
