Freely vs Freeview: What’s the Difference, and Which Should You Use?

Freely streams live TV over broadband without an aerial; Freeview uses an aerial for live TV and can work offline. Freeview Play adds internet-connected catch-up.

Freely streams live TV over broadband and does not need an aerial; Freeview delivers live TV to a television through a terrestrial aerial and can work without internet. Freeview Play adds internet-connected catch-up and on-demand features, so the choice is not simply “streaming versus no streaming.” Choose based on your broadband, aerial reception, the channels you want and whether your TV supports the service.

Freely vs Freeview at a glance

What matters Freely Freeview and Freeview Play
How live TV arrives Streams over broadband; an aerial is not required. Freeview live TV on a television comes through a terrestrial aerial.
Internet needed? Yes, for live and on-demand streaming. Freely recommends at least 10 Mbps. No for terrestrial live TV. Freeview Play catch-up and on-demand features need internet; Freeview lists 2 Mbps as a minimum for those services.
Aerial needed? No for streamed viewing. Some supported TVs can also receive terrestrial channels through an aerial. Yes for live terrestrial TV on a television. Reception depends on location and aerial condition.
Connected viewing Live and on-demand content are brought together in one interface; restart and other features depend on service, device and programme. Freeview Play adds connected catch-up and on-demand players alongside live TV in its guide.
Equipment A supported Freely TV or compatible streaming device. A Freeview-compatible TV or receiver and aerial for live terrestrial TV; Freeview Play also needs compatible connected equipment.
Availability Device support, channel guide and catalogue can change. Channel reception and line-up vary with local coverage and signal.

The central distinction is the delivery method. Freely’s comparison guide, dated 22 July 2026, puts it this way: “The key difference is how your TV is delivered: Freeview uses an aerial, while Freely uses your broadband and Wi-Fi connection to bring live and on-demand TV together in one place.” Freely’s comparison guide describes the two as different options, not a completed replacement of one by the other.

Which one should you use?

Choose Freely if broadband is reliable and an aerial is inconvenient

  • You have a reliable home internet connection and want live TV without installing or connecting an aerial.
  • You want to watch in a room without an aerial socket, provided you have a supported TV or streaming device and adequate Wi-Fi or wired connectivity.
  • You prefer live and on-demand viewing together in one interface.

Freely recommends at least 10 Mbps for live streaming and on-demand viewing. That is guidance, not a guarantee of a particular picture quality: performance also depends on your connection and the content being watched. See Freely’s equipment guidance and connection guidance.

Choose Freeview if aerial reception is good and broadband independence matters

  • Your home has usable terrestrial reception and you want live TV to keep working if broadband is unavailable.
  • You already have a compatible TV or receiver connected to a working aerial.
  • You want connected catch-up features too and have internet available for Freeview Play.

Use Freeview’s service information and aerial guidance to check what applies to your setup. Freeview recommends checking coverage before buying equipment or paying for installation.

Let your actual channels and setup decide

Check whether the specific channels you watch are available through the option you can receive at your address. A platform-wide channel total does not tell you whether your local aerial can receive a particular terrestrial service, or whether a streamed channel is currently in Freely’s guide. There is no established universal picture-quality winner: Freely notes that high-resolution availability depends on content and broadband, while Freeview reception depends on coverage and signal.

What equipment and internet do you need?

For Freely

You need a supported Freely TV or compatible streaming device and an internet connection. An aerial is optional for Freely’s streamed viewing, though some supported TVs can add terrestrial channels to the guide through an aerial. Freely says a television with HDMI can use a Freely streaming device. Its 19 February 2026 launch article names Manhattan Aero and Netgem PLEIO; compatibility can change, so verify the current device listing and your TV connection before buying. Freely’s 21 August 2026 guide says Samsung, LG and Sony TVs did not have Freely built in at the time of publication and points owners toward a streaming device. See Freely’s device launch article and TV compatibility guide.

For Freeview and Freeview Play

For live Freeview on a television, you need a compatible TV, box or recorder and a working aerial pointed toward a transmitter. Freeview recommends a wideband aerial for best results, but that does not mean every household needs a new aerial. Check the address-level coverage and inspect the existing aerial’s condition and direction first. If reception remains poor, Freeview recommends a qualified aerial installer. Its Freeview overview, Freeview Play guide and aerial advice explain the respective requirements.

Freeview lists 2 Mbps as a minimum for Freeview Play catch-up and on-demand features. That internet requirement is separate from aerial reception for terrestrial live TV.

Channel counts: useful context, not a like-for-like contest

Platform-published figures give a rough sense of scale, but they describe different delivery systems and should not be read as a direct comparison of channels available to every household.

Service Published figure How to interpret it
Freely More than 70 live TV channels, including 35+ in HD, and over 75,000 hours of on-demand programming, according to Freely’s comparison guide dated 22 July 2026. These are Freely’s published figures, not an independent audit. Channel and programme availability can change; consult the current Freely guide.
Freeview Over 100 channels, according to Freeview’s “What is Freeview?” page; the page’s publication year is not stated. Freeview says availability is subject to location and coverage. See Freeview’s overview.
Freeview Play Its official page describes more than 100 standard channels and connected on-demand players; a publication year for that figure is not stated. This is not a like-for-like count against Freely’s streamed channel figure. See Freeview Play’s guide.

For a practical choice, check the current channel guide and local reception for the channels you actually watch rather than relying on headline totals.

Does either service need a TV Licence?

Do not assume that free-to-access channels make either service licence-exempt. Freely says a TV Licence is needed to watch or record live TV and to use BBC iPlayer. Freeview says a licence applies to watching broadcast TV. The rules depend on what you watch and your circumstances; consult Freeview’s licence guidance and Freely’s guidance, then check current official TV Licensing information for your situation.

A quick decision checklist

  1. Check broadband: if you want Freely, confirm your connection is reliable; Freely recommends at least 10 Mbps.
  2. Check aerial reception: if you want Freeview live TV, use the official coverage checker for your address before purchasing an aerial or booking installation.
  3. Check the device: confirm your TV supports Freely or Freeview Play, or that a compatible receiver or streaming device will connect to it.
  4. Check the channels: compare the actual channels and services you watch with the current guide and what your address can receive.
  5. Account for the full setup: include broadband, compatible hardware, any necessary aerial work and applicable TV Licence requirements—not just the absence of a subscription charge.
