To protect your finances as a freelancer in the United States, keep clear records of every payment and business expense, plan for taxes as income arrives, and review your health coverage and Marketplace income estimate when your circumstances change. The details depend on your tax status, business structure, household, income pattern, and state; this guide covers federal guidance, not state, local, or non-U.S. requirements or individualized tax, insurance, or legal advice.
Build a recordkeeping routine you can maintain
Choose a system that clearly shows your business income and expenses. A spreadsheet, accounting tool, or paper journal can work; the IRS does not require a particular product or format. A separate business checking account is not established here as a universal requirement, though bank statements can be a useful source for recording transactions.

Record invoices, the dates and amounts clients pay, payment processing fees, business purchases, and estimated tax payments. Keep supporting documents—such as invoices, bills, receipts, deposit records, and canceled checks—so your entries can be substantiated. The IRS explains that “Good records will help you monitor the progress of your business, prepare your financial statements, identify sources of income, keep track of deductible expenses, keep track of your basis in property, prepare your tax returns, and support items reported on your tax returns.” IRS recordkeeping guidance and its list of supporting records describe the purpose and examples.

Set aside and pay taxes during the year
Client payments generally do not have employee-style income tax withholding, so people in business for themselves often need to make estimated tax payments during the year. IRS guidance says individuals generally need estimated payments if they expect to owe at least $1,000 when they file, subject to exceptions and special rules. The calculation can also be affected by withholding, credits, uneven income, and taxpayer-specific rules.
The IRS describes a general penalty-avoidance safe harbor: payments and withholding cover at least 90% of the current-year tax or 100% of the prior-year tax, whichever is smaller. Special rules apply, so these percentages are not a substitute for calculating your own obligation. Payments may be made more frequently than quarterly if enough has been paid by the applicable period deadline. Check the current tax year’s Form 1040-ES and IRS payment options for the relevant deadlines and instructions.

Filing requirements may differ with an individual’s situation.

A self-employed person without employees can apply for individual health coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace. The application uses household and income information to determine whether premium tax credits or other savings, including Medicaid or CHIP, may be available. Eligibility and available coverage depend on those circumstances.
Rank #3
Marketplace savings are based on estimated net self-employment income for the year of coverage—not simply last year’s income. Update the application if your business or household circumstances change. If you earn more than you reported, you may have to repay some or all of the advance premium tax credits paid on your behalf. See HealthCare.gov’s self-employed coverage guidance for details.
When comparing plans, consider the monthly premium alongside covered services and the out-of-pocket costs you might face when using care. A lower-premium plan may chiefly protect against high costs in a worst-case situation, while a higher-premium plan may have lower out-of-pocket costs when you use care. The suitable balance depends on your expected care and budget; there is no one plan choice established for every freelancer.

These steps offer a federal starting point, not a complete plan for every business. State and local tax rules, business structure, household circumstances, and individual coverage needs can change what applies. The federal sources cited here do not establish specific recommendations for disability-income, professional-liability, cyber, or business-interruption insurance; those decisions turn on factors such as occupation, contracts, location, and policy terms.
