Freelancing pays more than a full-time developer job only when your collected revenue, after unpaid time, expenses, replacement benefits, and taxes, exceeds the value of the job you would actually take. There is no universal freelance hourly rate that guarantees this: billable hours, contract gaps, insurance, retirement saving, and individual taxes change the result.
Is freelancing worth it compared with a full-time developer job?
Compare what each option leaves you with—not an employee’s salary against a freelancer’s invoices. For employment, estimate after-tax cash from the compensation you expect to receive, then separately value the benefits you will use. For freelancing, begin with money clients are likely to pay you, then subtract operating costs, the cost of replacing benefits, and taxes. Also account for time spent finding work, managing projects, and taking unpaid leave.

Benefits are common in U.S. private-sector employment, but population figures are not promises about a particular developer’s offer. In March 2026, 87% of private-industry full-time workers had access to medical care benefits and 67% participated. Among private-industry workers in management, professional, and related occupations, 86% had access to retirement benefits and 73% participated. Those are broad Bureau of Labor Statistics groups, not software-developer-specific rates. BLS Employee Benefits, March 2026.

That coverage could come through another job or a spouse; the figures do not show that freelancers themselves bought insurance. Federal Reserve, Economic Well-Being of U.S. Households in 2024.

What freelance hourly rate equals a developer salary?
There is no source-established rate that turns a developer’s salary into an equivalent freelance income. A salary is not directly comparable to a quoted freelance rate: employees are paid for their work time and may receive benefits and paid leave, while freelancers generally invoice only billable work and bear business costs and gaps between projects. BLS wage-and-salary data do not make this direct freelance-versus-employee comparison. BLS Current Population Survey earnings documentation.

1. Value the employment option
Estimate annual cash compensation you expect to receive, including salary and any bonus you consider reasonably likely. Estimate employee payroll withholding and income taxes to arrive at take-home cash. Separately estimate the value to you of employer health coverage, retirement contributions, paid leave, and other benefits you would actually use. Do not count the employer’s full stated benefit cost if it does not reflect value you would receive.

Calculate hourly or project fees multiplied by billable work that clients are likely to pay for—not every hour you work, and not every hour you invoice. Allow for unpaid sales, administration, revisions outside scope, late or uncollected invoices, time off, and gaps between contracts. If you work on projects, estimate collected revenue from the projects you realistically expect to complete and collect over the year.

3. Subtract the costs and obligations the client does not cover
Deduct business expenses, the cost of health coverage and retirement saving you need to replace, and applicable taxes. Keep work-related costs distinct from personal spending, and avoid counting the same expense twice. State and local rules, household circumstances, deductions, and other income can change the tax result.
The 2026 Social Security Administration figures help explain one difference in payroll taxes, but they are not total tax rates: the listed employee Social Security and Medicare rate is 7.65%, versus 15.30% for self-employed workers. The 2026 Social Security taxable maximum is $184,500, and additional Medicare tax thresholds also apply. Your complete result depends on your circumstances. How to stress-test your freelance calculation
Build three scenarios using the same rate and cost assumptions, changing how much work you actually collect and how much time is lost to gaps, leave, or nonbillable tasks. Do not treat these as national utilization benchmarks; they are planning cases for your own pipeline.
| Scenario | Billable work and collections | What to include |
|---|---|---|
| Conservative | Fewer paid billable hours or projects than planned; longer gaps or slower collection. | Unpaid leave, sales and admin time, costs, replacement benefits, and estimated taxes. |
| Expected | Your best evidence-based estimate of paid work and collections over a year. | The same deductions and obligations, using your likely schedule and contract pipeline. |
| Strong utilization | A plausible high-workload case with more collected billable work and fewer gaps. | Still include nonbillable administration, time off, expenses, replacement benefits, and taxes. |
For each case, calculate net cash and set it beside the employment option’s take-home cash. Then assess benefits and working conditions separately: health and retirement coverage, paid leave, nonbillable time, project gaps, business expenses, income predictability, and how much you value autonomy or stability. There is no evidence-based universal multiplier that prices all those factors correctly for every developer.

How should you handle taxes and worker classification?
The IRS says gig workers generally must report income and may have to pay estimated taxes. Net self-employment earnings of $400 or more generally trigger a tax-return filing requirement, including for temporary or part-time work; individual facts and current rules matter. Keep income and expense records that support your calculation and tax reporting. IRS Gig Economy Tax Center.
A client and worker cannot make a relationship independent contracting merely by calling it freelance. The IRS states: “The general rule is that an individual is an independent contractor if you, the person for whom the services are performed, have the right to control or direct only the result of the work and not the means and methods of accomplishing the result.” The classification analysis depends on the facts. IRS Publication 15-A, Employer’s Supplemental Tax Guide (2026).
How much should you charge to replace benefits?
Work backward from the annual freelance revenue your own model requires. Add the business expenses, replacement health and retirement costs, and tax obligations to the net cash you want; then divide by billable hours you reasonably expect to collect payment for. If your target is an annual net amount, use a tax estimate suited to your circumstances rather than simply adding the 15.30% self-employed Social Security and Medicare rate: that figure is not a complete tax rate.
Run the calculation with conservative, expected, and strong-utilization billable hours. If the required rate only works in the strongest case, the plan is exposed to gaps or missed collections. Revisit the assumptions—such as the work pipeline, leave, expenses, or benefits you need—rather than treating a higher quoted rate as guaranteed annual income.
