When a ZTE tablet says storage is full, start by finding out which category is using the space. Then work through the lowest-risk options first: old downloads, apps you no longer use, and copies of large personal files that you move to a computer before deleting them from the tablet. Clearing an app’s cache comes next. Clearing an app’s storage or data is a separate, permanent decision and should be a last resort for that app.
Two things to settle before you start. First, find your exact ZTE model number and Android version, usually under Settings > About tablet (labels vary by version). Second, understand that storage and memory are different. Storage holds your apps, photos and files. Memory (RAM) is what runs apps while the tablet is on. Closing apps or restarting the tablet does not free storage.

Find out what is using the space
Open Settings and tap Storage. On most current Android versions this screen shows a bar or list of categories such as apps, images, videos, audio and downloads. If you cannot find it, search for “storage” in the Settings search bar. Category names and the order of the list differ between Android versions and ZTE models, so treat these steps as the usual route rather than a fixed path.

Start with the lowest-risk cleanup
These steps remove data you can usually restore or do not need, and none of them erases an app’s personal data.
Review downloads
- Open the Files app (on some ZTE tablets it may be labeled differently or preinstalled under another name).
- Open the Downloads folder and sort by size or date.
- Delete installers, old PDFs, and media you no longer need. Keep anything you want to read again until you have copied it elsewhere.
Uninstall apps you no longer use
Go to Settings > Apps, select the app, and tap Uninstall. Uninstalling removes the app and its app data from the tablet. If you might want the data later, check inside the app for a sync or backup option before you uninstall it.

Use app archiving, if your tablet supports it
Google’s Android Help describes automatic app archiving on supported devices. The app is removed to free space, its personal data is kept, and its icon stays on the home screen. You can download the app again if it is still available on Google Play. Whether your ZTE tablet offers this depends on its device and Android version, so do not assume it is available. Clear cache (not the same as clearing data)
Open Settings > Apps, select the app, then go to its storage page (often labeled Storage & cache) and tap Clear cache. Cache holds temporary files. The app may be slower to open the next time you use it. For many apps the space recovered is small, so cache clearing is worth doing for the largest apps only.

Clear storage and clear data are different
The two buttons on an app’s storage page carry very different risks. Android Help states that clearing storage permanently deletes all of that app’s data and recommends deleting data from inside the app first where possible.

Before clearing data for any app, check whether it keeps offline maps, saved media or game progress that is not synced to an online account.

Move personal files to a computer
Photos, videos and documents you want to keep can be copied to a computer over USB. Android Help documents this transfer method, followed by deleting the tablet copies if you want the space back.

- On the tablet, open the USB notification and choose the file transfer option (labels vary; it is often called File transfer).
- On the computer, copy the files to a folder. Open a few of them to confirm they work and that the count matches.
- Only then delete the originals from the tablet, in the Files or Gallery app.
Using a microSD card: check your model first
Some ZTE tablets support microSDXC cards, but the features are model-specific. The steps below apply only to the ZTE Grand X View 3, based on its 2020 manual. Do not assume the same menus or limits exist on other ZTE tablets.

What the ZTE Grand X View 3 manual documents
- A Storage menu that shows information for both the tablet and the microSDXC card.
- A Saving location setting that lets you choose Tablet or SD card for new data such as photos and voice recordings. It applies to new files, not to files already on the tablet.
- An internal storage breakdown with the FREE UP SPACE action described above.
- Portable storage actions to mount, unmount and format the microSDXC card.
What is not established
- The manual excerpt does not state a universal maximum card capacity. Check the model’s specifications before buying a card.
- It does not say that all apps can be moved to an SD card. Treat app-to-card moves as unconfirmed unless your tablet’s settings show the option.
- It does not apply to other ZTE tablets. Confirm your model number and the official manual for your model.
Formatting a card erases everything on it. If the tablet asks you to format a card, copy its files to a computer first.
If an app still will not install
ZTE’s support troubleshooting article for installation failures lists insufficient free storage as one possible cause. It suggests clearing cache or trash, or uninstalling unused apps. It also says to check whether a microSD card used for apps is recognized and not damaged. That article is written for phones rather than a specific tablet, so use it as general manufacturer guidance. What not to do as an early step
A factory reset is not a routine way to free space. The sources reviewed for this guide do not support it as necessary for ordinary cleanup, and it erases everything on the tablet. Third-party cleaner apps are also not needed: the steps above use Android’s own storage, app and file tools.
