For a standard YouTube video, upload a JPG or PNG at 3840 × 2160 pixels in a 16:9 ratio, with a width of at least 640 pixels. YouTube Shorts need the opposite orientation: 2160 × 3840 pixels in 9:16. Podcast playlist artwork uses a square 1:1 ratio. The 1280 × 720 size that many free tools offer is a convenient editing canvas, not YouTube’s current official recommendation.
Recommended thumbnail sizes by content type
YouTube’s Help page on custom thumbnails sets different targets for each kind of content. The table below uses the values that page lists. Where it does not give a value, the cell says so.

Why 3840 × 2160 is the target, not 1280 × 720
Creator tools tend to default to 1280 × 720 because it is a familiar 16:9 frame. YouTube’s guidance is different: its Help page says, “Your custom thumbnail image should be as large as possible.” Starting from a 1280 × 720 file gives you a usable image, but it is the floor of what many tools produce, not the ceiling. If your source artwork is larger, export at 3840 × 2160 so YouTube has more pixels to work with. Canva’s size page carries “2022” in its title, so check YouTube’s Help page for the current recommendation before relying on the figures in any third-party guide.

Shorts thumbnails
Shorts use a vertical frame. YouTube recommends 2160 × 3840 pixels at 9:16, with a minimum height of 640 pixels. According to the same Help page, custom thumbnail uploads for Shorts are currently done in YouTube Studio on a computer. Do not reuse a landscape 16:9 file for a Short; crop or redesign the artwork in the vertical frame first.
Podcast playlist artwork
Podcast playlists use a square frame. YouTube recommends 1:1 rather than 16:9. Its Help page lists a 10 MB limit on mobile and 50 MB on desktop for podcast thumbnails. The page does not state pixel dimensions or minimum sizes for this format, so use a square file and keep it within the file-size limit.

Format and file-size limits
YouTube lists JPG and PNG as accepted formats. The file-size ceiling depends on the device you upload from, not only the content type:

- Regular video thumbnails: 2 MB when uploading from mobile, 50 MB from desktop.
- Podcast thumbnails: 10 MB from mobile, 50 MB from desktop.
The older blanket 2 MB figure you may see in other guides applies only to video thumbnails uploaded from a mobile device.

How to upload a custom thumbnail on a computer
- Open YouTube Studio on your computer.
- Select Content from the left-hand menu.
- Choose the video you want to update.
- Under Thumbnail, select Upload file, then pick your JPG or PNG.
- Select Save.
Expect a delay. YouTube’s Help page notes that changes may take time to appear, so a new thumbnail may not show immediately on every surface.
Vertical videos may display differently
A vertical video with a 16:9 custom thumbnail may be shown with an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. According to YouTube Help, the custom thumbnail still appears in the watch feed, in watch history, and on non-mobile platforms. If a vertical video’s thumbnail looks wrong on Home, the cause is this automatic substitution, not necessarily a problem with your file.

Canva’s pages describe this workflow, but this guide does not establish which features, if any, require a paid plan. Check Canva’s current terms before you start.
- Buffer’s free image resizer (Buffer, “Free YouTube Thumbnail Resizer”) states that it resizes images to 1280 × 720 in a 16:9 ratio. It is a quick route when you already have a finished image. Its page does not establish output quality, so compare the result on your own image before publishing.
Canva’s size guide is also available at canva.com/sizes/youtube. Both tools produce 16:9 output, so for Shorts and podcast artwork you will need to set the correct ratio yourself.

Troubleshooting upload problems
- No thumbnail upload option appears: YouTube Help states that custom video thumbnails require a verified account.
- File rejected: Confirm the format is JPG or PNG and the file is under the limit for the device you are using. A file that is 3 MB may pass on desktop and fail on mobile.
- Thumbnail did not change: Changes may take time to appear. Refresh after a short wait before re-uploading.
- Upload blocked or limited: Thumbnails must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. Daily custom-thumbnail limits can vary by region or channel history. A correctly sized file does not override either condition.
- Vertical video looks cropped on Home: This is the auto-generated 4:5 display described above. Check the watch page to see your uploaded image.
Checklist before you upload
- Pick the ratio for the format: 16:9 for regular videos, 9:16 for Shorts, 1:1 for podcast playlists.
- Export at 3840 × 2160 (regular video) or 2160 × 3840 (Shorts) when your source allows it.
- Save as JPG or PNG and check the file size against the mobile or desktop limit.
- Confirm your account is verified and the image meets the Community Guidelines.
