Free VPN Extensions for Chrome: What to Know in 2026

Compare provider-published free Chrome VPN extension terms and learn why a browser add-on is not the same as device-wide VPN protection.

For a free VPN extension in Chrome, compare the account and data conditions before installing: Proton VPN requires a Proton account on its Free plan, Windscribe lists 10 GB per month after email confirmation, and CyberGhost advertises an extension with no account or email. These are provider-published terms, not results from comparative testing. A Chrome VPN extension protects browser traffic; it does not automatically protect other apps or all traffic on your device.

What a Chrome VPN extension protects

A VPN extension is a browser add-on, not necessarily a full VPN app. Proton says its extension protects browser activity and does not cover system activity or other applications. CyberGhost also describes its extension as protecting browser traffic rather than the entire device. If you need protection for traffic from other apps, investigate a full VPN app and confirm its coverage for your operating system.

Installing an extension also means trusting its provider with browser-related access. The information available here does not establish comparative findings about extension permissions, source code, leak protection, speed, or reliability. Review the current store listing and provider terms before deciding.

Free Chrome VPN extensions: published terms

The details below are provider or store-listing claims checked on October 7, 2026, not independent verification of service behavior. Terms and availability can change, so check the linked current pages before installing.

Extension Free access and account conditions Data terms Server or location choice Coverage and use-case notes
Proton VPN Free-plan users can use the extension with a Proton account. No free-tier data cap is stated on the cited support page. Its setup page describes Quick Connect and searching for a country or server; no free-location count is stated. Browser activity only; Proton says streaming through the extension is available on a paid plan.
Windscribe The Chrome page says users can get started without email or a credit card; the store publisher page conditions its free-plan allowance on confirming an email address. 10 GB per month on the free plan if the user confirms an email address, according to Windscribe Limited’s Chrome Web Store publisher page checked October 7, 2026. The product page also notes fair use. No free-location count is stated on the cited pages. Chrome extension; confirm current account and data mechanics with Windscribe.
CyberGhost The provider says no account or email is needed. No data cap or fair-use limit is stated on the cited page. CyberGhost advertised 8 extension servers in 4 countries—United States, Germany, Netherlands, and Romania—on its page checked October 7, 2026. Browser traffic only, not the whole device. The cited page does not establish streaming access on the free extension.

How to choose based on what you need

If you want to avoid creating an account

CyberGhost says its free extension requires no account or email. Windscribe’s Chrome page says setup can begin without email or a credit card, but its stated 10 GB monthly free allowance requires confirming an email address. Proton’s extension is available to Free-plan users with a Proton account.

If you need a stated monthly data allowance

Windscribe’s Chrome Web Store publisher page states 10 GB per month for the free plan when the user confirms an email address. Its Chrome product page also mentions fair use. Check both pages for the current mechanics before relying on that allowance.

If server locations matter

CyberGhost’s page lists eight extension servers in four countries. That figure describes its advertised server selection, not a measurement of speed or availability from your location. The cited materials do not establish a comparable free-location count for Proton or Windscribe.

If you want streaming

Do not assume a free Chrome extension includes streaming access. Proton says streaming through its extension is available on a paid plan; the cited provider information does not establish free-tier streaming access for the other extensions. Confirm support for the exact streaming service and current plan before choosing.

Install Proton’s Chrome extension

  1. Open Proton’s Chrome extension setup page and follow its link to the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Install the extension, then sign in with a Proton account. Proton says Free-plan users can use the extension.
  3. Choose Quick Connect or search for a country or server in the extension.

Proton says the extension can work without installing its full VPN app and lists Chromium-based browsers including Edge, Chromium, Opera, and Vivaldi. Check the provider’s current setup instructions for supported browsers and availability.

What provider privacy claims do—and do not—tell you

Proton says its no-logs infrastructure has been independently audited. That is Proton’s statement; the information cited here does not include a review of an audit report or comparable independent assessments for the extensions listed. Treat privacy and security statements as claims to verify against current provider documentation, rather than guarantees established by the feature descriptions alone.
