Unturned multiplayer servers run through the Unturned Dedicated Server tool, installed and updated with Valve’s SteamCMD. You can run that software on a spare Windows or Linux computer, or on a VPS you administer. There is no recurring server-provider charge in that arrangement, but the underlying resources are still yours to provide.
- Hardware: a spare PC, home server or rented VPS with enough CPU, memory and storage for your world and player group.
- Connectivity: reliable upload bandwidth and a network path that accepts incoming connections.
- Power and availability: the host machine must stay powered on for players to connect.
- Administration: updates, configuration, permissions, mod changes, backups, troubleshooting and security are your responsibility.
A free software installation is therefore different from a free, fully managed service. If you already own suitable hardware and have an internet connection that permits hosting, self-hosting can be the least expensive option. If you need someone else to provide the machine, network and support, expect a paid plan.

Option 1: self-host the Unturned Dedicated Server
Who should choose it
Self-hosting suits a small group, a technically comfortable administrator, or anyone with a spare computer or VPS. It offers the most control over maps, settings and supported server extensions, with no monthly hosting-plan bill.
How the setup works
- Prepare the host. Choose a computer or VPS that can remain online and install SteamCMD. Keep the operating system updated and create a dedicated account or folder for the server files.
- Install the official server tool. Use SteamCMD to download the Unturned Dedicated Server and to apply updates. The same tool is used whenever you need to refresh the installation.
- Configure the server. Set the server name, map, difficulty, password, player limit and administrator permissions in the configuration files and launch parameters supported by the dedicated-server software.
- Obtain a Game Server Login Token (GSLT). A valid token is required for the server to appear on Unturned’s public server list. Keep the token private and replace it if it is exposed.
- Forward the server port. For internet play, create a port-forwarding rule on the router that sends the server’s listening port to the host computer’s local address. The official documentation identifies port forwarding as required for hosting over the internet.
- Start and test the server. Launch the dedicated-server process, connect from the same network first, then test from an external connection. Confirm that the listing, password, map and administrator access behave as intended.
- Plan maintenance. Schedule updates during a quiet period, copy world and configuration files to a separate location, and monitor disk space, memory use and logs.
Use the current Unturned and SteamCMD documentation for the exact application identifier, launch syntax and port value for your platform. Those details can change with server releases; copying an old command from an unrelated guide is a common source of failed installs.

What self-hosting gives you
- No recurring fee to a game-server host.
- Direct control over configuration, maps, permissions and supported mod frameworks.
- Freedom to choose the physical location and hardware, subject to your own resources.
- The ability to leave the game client closed while the dedicated server continues running.
What you must absorb
- Home-network limits: consumer upload capacity, carrier-grade NAT or restrictive routers can prevent inbound connections.
- Changing addresses: a dynamic public IP may require players to use an updated address or a dynamic-DNS arrangement.
- Power and heat: a computer running continuously consumes electricity and can fail like any other hardware.
- Security: expose only the required server port, use strong administrator credentials and keep the operating system and server files patched.
- Recovery: without independent backups, a corrupted world, bad update or disk failure can erase progress.
Can a free server stay online 24/7?
Yes, but only if the host machine and its network connection stay available 24/7. A dedicated server is independent of the player’s game session, so you can shut your own Unturned client while the world continues to run. It will still stop when the computer sleeps, reboots, loses power, drops its internet connection or encounters a software failure.

For dependable availability, disable automatic sleep on the host, use a wired connection where practical, configure a safe restart procedure after updates, and check the server after power or router reboots. A home connection with frequent outages cannot provide the same continuity as a professionally operated data-centre service, even though the software itself is free.
Option 2: paid managed Unturned hosting
Managed hosting is the practical alternative when you want a persistent server without maintaining a home machine. You rent a server instance and operate it through a provider’s control panel; the provider supplies the underlying hardware, network and much of the routine infrastructure.
One current Unturned offering advertises instant setup, free DDoS protection, OpenMod and RocketMod support, beta-branch support, three days of free server backups and 21 worldwide locations. These are vendor-stated product features, not independent performance measurements. A setup guide for dedicated servers also describes 24/7 operation, automatic backups, administration tools, custom systems and configurable mod frameworks.

A managed plan is not free, and the advertised feature set does not guarantee a particular CPU allocation, memory limit, latency or player capacity. Before paying, check the current plan page for the actual resources, billing interval, renewal price, cancellation and refund rules, backup retention, data-centre region, mod support and ticket-response process. Also disclose any affiliate relationship when linking to a provider.

Network and listing requirements
Port forwarding
Players outside your local network cannot normally reach a server hidden behind a home router until the relevant listening port is forwarded to the host machine. Give the host a stable local address, create the router rule, allow the server through the operating system firewall, and test from outside your Wi-Fi. If the rule appears correct but external players still cannot connect, ask your internet provider whether carrier-grade NAT blocks inbound traffic.
Game Server Login Token
The GSLT is separate from your personal game login. The official knowledge base requires a valid token for a server to appear on the public server list. Treat it as a secret: do not paste it into screenshots, public configuration files or chat. A server can be reachable by direct address while still failing to list if the token is missing, invalid or associated with the wrong configuration.

Capacity, performance and player expectations
There is no single “free-tier” player limit established for Unturned because self-hosted capacity depends on your CPU, available memory, storage speed, network upload and the complexity of your map and mods. Start with a small private test, add players gradually, and watch server logs and system resource usage during peak activity.
- Leave headroom instead of allocating every available resource to the game process.
- Test the exact map and mod set your group will use; a lightly modded test does not represent a heavily customized world.
- Prefer a nearby host location for lower latency when a VPS or managed region is available.
- Record configuration changes so you can roll back a mod or update that causes crashes.
Backups and updates: a practical routine
- Stop or safely pause the server before copying world and configuration data.
- Keep at least one backup on a different disk or machine from the live server.
- Retain multiple restore points so a corrupted save is not copied over every backup.
- Apply SteamCMD and server updates during a maintenance window, then verify the map, plugins and permissions.
- Test a restore periodically; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Managed hosts can automate parts of this routine, but “automatic backup” does not tell you how long files are retained or whether restores are included. Read those limits before relying on the feature.
Are there genuinely free third-party Unturned tiers?
Current authoritative information does not establish a dependable list of third-party providers offering a free, Unturned-specific hosted tier with published limits. A free plan for another game is not evidence of Unturned compatibility. Treat any claim as unverified until the provider’s own current plan or support documentation explicitly names Unturned and states its CPU, memory, storage, sleep policy, player limits and retention rules.
For that reason, self-hosting through SteamCMD is the confirmed zero-hosting-fee path. Third-party hosting becomes a convenience purchase rather than a free alternative.

Choose self-hosting when
- You already have a spare computer or VPS.
- Your group is small enough for your available resources.
- You are comfortable with SteamCMD, router settings and server maintenance.
- You want maximum control and can accept responsibility for outages and backups.
Choose managed hosting when
- The server must remain online without your home PC running.
- Your internet provider blocks inbound hosting or your home connection is unreliable.
- You need packaged DDoS mitigation, automated backups, a control panel or support.
- The time spent administering a server is worth more to you than the monthly fee.
Troubleshooting the most common failures
The server is not visible in the list
Check that a valid GSLT is configured, the dedicated-server process is running and the server has completed startup without errors. Listing visibility does not replace network reachability; verify the router and firewall separately.
Local players can connect, but internet players cannot
Recheck the host’s local IP, router forwarding rule and operating-system firewall. Confirm that the public address has not changed and that your provider is not using carrier-grade NAT.
The server disappears overnight
Look for sleep settings, automatic operating-system updates, router reboots, power interruptions and disk-full conditions. Configure a restart and monitoring plan, or move the service to a managed host if unattended uptime is essential.
An update or mod breaks the world
Stop changing multiple components at once, restore the last known-good backup and test the update on a copy of the world. Keep a written inventory of server version, map and framework versions so you can identify the change that caused the failure.

The clearest free Unturned server in 2026 is one you run yourself with the official Unturned Dedicated Server and SteamCMD. It can be persistent and fully configurable, but only when you provide an always-on machine, suitable networking, port forwarding, a valid Game Server Login Token, security and reliable backups. Managed hosting is the paid option for simpler deployment, support and operational features such as advertised DDoS protection, backups, mod-framework support and multiple locations.
