The Sons of the Forest dedicated-server software costs nothing, but “free hosting” means running it yourself. You supply the computer, electricity, internet connection, router configuration and maintenance. No free managed-hosting tier was identified, so your practical choices are self-hosting on hardware you already own or paying a game-server provider to run the machine for you.
What “free Sons of the Forest server hosting” actually means
The dedicated server is distributed as a separate free Steam application, app ID 2465200. The computer running that application does not need to own or launch the game. Players still need their own game access to join and play, but the server machine can download the server anonymously.

Choose self-hosting when you already have an always-on Windows PC, can change your router settings and are comfortable troubleshooting connections. Choose managed hosting when reliable availability and a simple control panel are worth the monthly cost, or when your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) that prevents inbound connections.
How to host a Sons of the Forest server for free
1. Check the machine before installing
- Processor: a dual-core Intel or AMD CPU is the guide-level minimum; a quad-core processor is preferable for smoother operation.
- Memory: allow at least 8 GB of RAM for the server process and operating system.
- Storage: keep at least 12 GB free for the installation and working files. Leave additional room for saves, logs and updates.
- Availability: plan for the computer to run continuously. Sleep, hibernation, automatic reboots and power loss all take the server offline.
- Network: your connection needs a usable public route and enough upstream capacity for the players you invite. A fast download rate alone does not guarantee that others can connect.
These are guide figures rather than a universal performance guarantee. Player count, world activity, background programs and future game updates can change the load. If the machine is also your everyday PC, schedule updates and backups so they do not interrupt sessions.
2. Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD
SteamCMD is the command-line installer commonly used for the server. Create a dedicated folder, open a terminal in the SteamCMD directory and run an anonymous installation command such as:

On Windows, use the native server executable supplied in the installed folder. Keep the folder outside locations that are aggressively synchronized or cleaned by other software, and give the process permission to write saves and logs.
3. Create the configuration and administrator list
On first launch, locate dedicatedserver.cfg in the server’s configuration files and edit the settings you need, such as server name, password and gameplay options. Add administrator identifiers to ownerswhitelist.txt using the format expected by the generated file and the current server build. Make a backup before changing values, and stop the server before editing to avoid overwrites.
Do not copy a port list from an old tutorial without checking your own files. Patch changes can add, remove or rename keys. The configuration generated by your installation is the authoritative starting point for that version.

An older guide lists 27015 and 27016 as defaults, which is why copying historical instructions can produce a server that appears online locally but cannot be reached from outside. Treat the table as a starting point only: open dedicatedserver.cfg after installation and forward the exact values it specifies. If you change a port, update both the router rule and the server configuration.
- Give the server PC a stable LAN address, either by setting a static address correctly or creating a DHCP reservation in the router.
- In the router’s port-forwarding page, create UDP rules for each configured server port, targeting that stable LAN address.
- Allow the server executable through the operating system firewall on the same UDP ports. A router rule cannot bypass a blocked local firewall.
- Restart the server and router if required, then test from a network that is not your home Wi-Fi.
Forwarding to the wrong internal address is a common failure after a router lease changes. Document the LAN address and verify it in the server computer’s network settings before troubleshooting anything more complicated.
Why friends cannot connect: a practical diagnosis
Confirm the real join path
Ask a friend to try joining, or disconnect your phone from Wi-Fi and test through its hotspot. A test from inside your own network can be misleading because many routers do not support hairpin NAT (also called NAT loopback). If outside players can join but you cannot connect using the public address from home, use the server browser’s LAN tab or the local address while on the same network.
Check for CGNAT and double NAT
Carrier-grade NAT places multiple customers behind one public IPv4 address. Port-forwarding rules on your router cannot accept unsolicited traffic when the ISP’s upstream NAT is in the way. Double NAT occurs when two routers both perform routing, such as an ISP gateway connected to your own router. Put the gateway in bridge mode when appropriate, remove the second routing layer, or ask the ISP for a publicly reachable address. If the ISP cannot provide one, a managed host or a networking solution designed for outbound-only connections may be more practical than continuing to change local rules.

Work through the firewall and address checklist
- Verify the server process is running and listening on the configured ports.
- Confirm every rule is UDP, not only TCP.
- Check that the router forwards to the server’s current LAN IP.
- Temporarily test with a narrowly scoped firewall rule, then restore a least-privilege rule once the cause is known.
- Compare the public address shown by the router with the address visible from an outside network; a mismatch can indicate CGNAT or an upstream router.
- Retest after updates, because a patch can regenerate configuration or change a default port.
Windows versus Linux for a dedicated server
Windows: the straightforward route
Endnight ships a Windows server binary, so Windows avoids a compatibility layer. It is generally the simplest choice for a first installation: install the files, edit the generated configuration, create firewall rules and set the process to start after a reboot. Keep Windows Update and restart policies in mind when promising availability to friends.
Linux: possible, but not the native path
The developer has not supplied a native Linux server binary in the material available for this guide. Linux administrators commonly run the Windows build through Wine, often inside a community-maintained Docker image. That approach can reduce host overhead and fit an existing Linux machine, but it adds another layer to update and troubleshoot. Confirm that the image tracks the current server build, map the UDP ports from the container to the host, persist the save and configuration directories, and test a full restart before inviting players.
If you want the least complicated free setup, use Windows. Choose Wine or Docker when you already manage Linux containers and are prepared to diagnose image, permission and networking issues yourself.

What paid managed hosting changes
A managed game-server provider supplies an online machine, installs or exposes the dedicated server through a control panel and handles much of the router-level work. You normally select a plan, choose a region, set a server name and password, and start the instance without forwarding ports on your home network.
For a managed option, Godlike.Host lists Sons of the Forest plans with 4, 12 and 20 slots. Its Sons of the Forest plans list 4, 12 and 20 slots; the server’s MaxPlayers setting allows 1 to 8 players (Steam Community server guide, 11 Oct 2026).
One cited plan example includes a dual-core AMD CPU, 8 GB of RAM and 100 GB of disk. Those specifications are an example, not a universal requirement or performance guarantee; compare the resources, backup policy, player limits and upgrade rules of the plan you are considering. The available information did not verify a provider’s uptime SLA or establish a permanently free tier.
Managed hosting trades control for convenience. You may have less access to operating-system logs, custom launch scripts or unusual configuration changes, while the provider handles hardware failures and routine connectivity. Read the cancellation and data-retention terms so you know how to download world saves before a plan ends.

Do you need to buy the game to run a server?
No. The dedicated server downloads anonymously as Steam app 2465200, so the server computer does not need the game purchased or installed as a playable client. This does not grant players free access: each person joining still needs the game through the normal distribution channel. Keeping the server and player installations on compatible versions is essential after updates.
