Free Arma 3 Server Hosting: What Your Options Are in 2026

Arma 3’s dedicated-server software is free, but reliable hosting is not. Compare self-hosting, temporary trials and free VPS tiers, with hardware requirements, network checks, risks and migration advice.

There is no permanent, reliable, completely free Arma 3 hosting service for a community. Your practical choices are running Bohemia Interactive’s free dedicated-server software on your own computer, using a host’s temporary trial, or trying a free-tier virtual private server (VPS). The software costs nothing; hardware, electricity, upload bandwidth, administration and, eventually, a hosting bill are the real costs.

For a small group, self-hosting is usually the most genuinely free route. A trial can be useful for a short event. A free VPS may work for testing, but inconsistent performance and upgrade pressure make it a poor foundation for a busy, modded community.

What “free Arma 3 server hosting” actually means

Arma 3 has a free dedicated-server package from Bohemia Interactive. You need a Steam account to install it, but you do not need to purchase the regular Arma 3 game to download or run the server package. That distinction matters: free server software is not the same as free infrastructure.

When the server runs on your own PC, you supply the processor, memory, storage, electrical power and internet connection. A hosting company supplies those resources only while its trial or free tier lasts, and it may restrict CPU time, memory, bandwidth, support or renewal. A “$0” VPS listing can therefore be free at sign-up without being a dependable long-term server.

For a continuing public community, plan on either your own suitable hardware or a paid server. Free offers are best treated as learning environments, short demonstrations or temporary events rather than permanent capacity.

Option 1: Run the dedicated server on your own PC

Self-hosting is the only option that can remain free indefinitely, provided you already have suitable hardware and internet service. It is also the option with the most control: you choose the mission, mods, configuration, restart schedule and access rules.

Official hardware figures

Bohemia Interactive’s published server guidance lists the following figures. The minimum and recommended values are starting points, not guaranteed player counts; the official material does not publish a universal players-per-core or players-per-gigabyte formula.

Resource Minimum listed Recommended listed What it means in practice
CPU 2.4 GHz dual-core 3.5 GHz quad-core Higher sustained clock speed and more cores provide more headroom for AI, scripts, mods and other programs on the machine.
Memory 2 GB RAM 4 GB RAM The server, operating system and mod tools share memory. A machine used for gaming at the same time needs additional headroom.
Storage 32 GB 32 GB SSD The base allocation is for the server and files; large mod collections and backups need more space.

These figures come from the Bohemia Interactive wiki and should be checked against the current documentation before deployment because requirements can change. They do not promise smooth operation for a particular mission or population. A heavily scripted scenario with many AI units can be demanding even when the server meets the listed recommendation.

Self-hosting setup procedure

  1. Prepare a separate server account or machine. A spare desktop, mini-PC or virtual machine is easier to maintain than the computer you use for play. If you must combine them, leave CPU, memory and disk I/O available for the server.
  2. Install the official dedicated-server package. Use the Steam account required by Bohemia Interactive’s distribution method, then place the server files in a directory with enough free space for the base installation, configuration, logs and mods.
  3. Create a controlled configuration. Set the server name, password policy, mission rotation, administrator credentials and mod list. Keep a copy of every configuration file so you can restore a known-good state after an update.
  4. Install and test mods one at a time. Confirm that the server starts with the base mission first. Add a mod or a small group of compatible mods, start again, and read the log for missing dependencies or version mismatches. This isolates failures instead of leaving you with a long, ambiguous startup error.
  5. Make the service start reliably. On Windows, use a scheduled task or service wrapper; on Linux, use the operating system’s service manager. Configure automatic restart after a crash, but do not create a rapid restart loop that fills the disk with logs.
  6. Configure network access. The router and local firewall must permit the server’s configured traffic, and the server must have a stable local address. Apply only the rules required by the dedicated server rather than disabling the firewall entirely.
  7. Test from outside your home network. Ask a friend on another connection to join. A test from the same LAN can succeed even when router forwarding, carrier-grade NAT or an ISP restriction prevents public players from connecting.
  8. Monitor before inviting a community. Watch CPU, memory, disk space, upload usage, log growth and restart frequency during a realistic mission. A server that is fine with two friends may struggle once AI, scripts and several clients are active.
  9. Schedule maintenance. Back up configurations and mission files, document the mod versions, and announce restart windows. Keep the operating system and server software patched, but test updates on a copy before changing a busy instance.

The costs that do not appear on the hosting invoice

  • Electricity: an always-on desktop consumes power continuously, even when nobody is playing.
  • Upload capacity: every connected player and modded mission uses upstream bandwidth. Residential connections often have less upload than download capacity.
  • Performance contention: playing on the same computer can cause stutter or server simulation delays.
  • Availability: a home reboot, power failure, ISP outage or sleeping computer takes the server offline.
  • Administration: you are responsible for backups, updates, moderation, passwords and recovery.

Network compatibility: check public IPv4 before committing

Some Arma 3 setup reports flag problems with IPv6-only service and DS-Lite, which carries IPv4 through an IPv6 connection. That compatibility warning was not confirmed against a current Bohemia Interactive reference in the available material, so treat it as a verification step rather than a guaranteed rule.

If outside players cannot connect, ask your ISP whether the connection has a publicly reachable IPv4 address and whether inbound traffic is blocked. Confirm the router’s forwarding and firewall rules, then test from a genuinely external network. If your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT and cannot provide a public address, self-hosting may require a different connection or a relay/VPN design; do not assume that adding more router rules will solve it.

Option 2: Use a free game-server trial

A trial host removes most of the networking work and is convenient for a weekend event or a configuration test. The trade-off is that the “free” period is temporary and the server may stop, be deleted or require payment when the trial ends.

What is currently advertised

Legion Hosting publishes a page advertising a free Arma 3 server trial. The exact duration, resource limits, deletion policy and payment requirements should be read on the provider’s current terms before you deploy a community that depends on it.

Search summaries have also reported a 48-hour PingPerfect trial and a process involving support before the trial ends to retain the server, with a lowest paid plan reported at about $10.45 per month. Those details were not confirmed on a provider page here, so regard them as leads to verify, not promises. Trial lengths, prices and retention rules can change by region and date.

Trial checklist

  • Is a credit card required, even if the advertised price is zero?
  • Exactly when does the trial expire, and is the server stopped or deleted?
  • What CPU, RAM, storage and upload limits apply?
  • Are custom missions, Steam Workshop content and server-side mods allowed?
  • Can you download your configuration, saves and logs before expiry?
  • Does the server receive a public IPv4 address, and are required ports included?
  • What is the recurring price after the trial, including taxes and renewal date?
  • Can support extend a trial, or must you open a ticket before a deadline?

Do not wait until the final hour to export files. A trial is useful only if you can move the mission and configuration to another machine when the free period ends.

Option 3: Try a free-tier VPS

A VPS gives you a remote machine that can remain online without keeping your home PC running. You install and administer the dedicated server yourself, so it is closer to self-hosting than to a managed game-server plan.

A HostAdvice roundup has listed $0.00 starting prices for VPS products from Kamatera, IONOS and InterServer, among others. A list price is not proof that a suitable Arma 3 instance is available at no cost: free allocations may be promotional, limited to new accounts, restricted by location, or subject to an upgrade after a credit or trial period. Check the provider’s own current terms, not just the roundup.

Cybernews has cautioned that free VPS services often deliver poor performance or steer users toward a paid upgrade. That warning is especially relevant to Arma 3, where CPU speed, consistent scheduling and memory matter more than a headline storage figure.

VPS requirements to verify

  • At least the published 2 GB minimum memory, with additional headroom for the operating system and mods; 4 GB is the listed recommendation.
  • A CPU allocation that is sustained rather than a short burst shared with heavily loaded neighbors.
  • 32 GB or more of usable storage after the operating system, with room for mods, logs and backups.
  • A public IPv4 address and inbound network controls compatible with the server.
  • Enough outbound transfer for your expected player population and mission activity.
  • Permission to run a game server and to use the required ports and processes.
  • A way to snapshot or export the machine before a free allocation is reclaimed.

When a free VPS is a sensible experiment

Use one to learn Linux administration, test a mod set, or run a private session with a few friends while measuring resource use. Do not treat it as production infrastructure until it survives an extended mission without CPU throttling, memory pressure, network loss or forced upgrades. A weak free VPS can feel worse than a modest home PC because you cannot control the neighboring workloads or the provider’s reclamation policy.

Free options compared

Route Up-front price Performance control Network responsibility Long-term risk Best use
Your own PC or LAN No hosting fee; power and internet still cost money Highest control over hardware You handle router, firewall and public reachability Home outages, ISP limits and maintenance Small private group or permanent self-managed server
Game-server trial $0 during the stated trial, if eligible Depends on the host’s allocation Usually simpler, but verify IPv4 and access rules Expiry, deletion and recurring renewal Short event, evaluation or migration test
Free-tier VPS $0 only under the provider’s current terms Variable; shared and throttled resources are possible You administer the OS, firewall and server Reclamation, upgrade pressure and weak performance Learning, development and very small tests

Mods, missions and player capacity

There is no official Bohemia Interactive table that converts CPU, RAM or bandwidth into a guaranteed player count. Capacity changes with AI numbers, scripts, mission design, physics activity, map, mod dependencies and how often the server must simulate objects. A lightly modded private mission and a large scripted community scenario can have very different requirements.

Measure the workload you actually intend to run. Start with the planned mission and mod set, invite players gradually, and watch for simulation delays, desynchronization, rising memory use and network saturation. If removing a mod fixes the problem, check its dependencies and configuration before blaming the host. Keep a minimal “base” profile so you can confirm whether a failure belongs to the server, mission or mod collection.

Common failure modes and fixes

Friends cannot see or join the server

Test from outside the LAN, confirm the server is listening on the configured interface, check the firewall and router rules, and verify that the ISP supplies a reachable public IPv4. A local connection test alone is not sufficient.

The server starts, then stops or restarts

Read the final lines of the log, check for missing mod dependencies, confirm that the startup parameters point to the intended profile, and inspect available disk space. If an automatic restart is configured, temporarily disable it while diagnosing so the original error remains visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players report lag or desynchronization

Measure CPU saturation, memory pressure and upload utilization during the exact mission that lags. Reduce unnecessary AI or scripts, remove incompatible mods, stop other workloads on the machine, or move to hardware with a faster sustained CPU and more headroom.

A free trial is about to expire

Export configuration files, mission files, mod lists, administrator details and backups before the deadline. Decide whether to migrate to your own PC, another trial or a paid plan; never assume the provider will preserve the instance after expiry.

Which route should you choose?

  1. Choose your own PC if you have a machine meeting the published figures, a reachable connection and the time to maintain it. This is the most credible way to keep costs at zero.
  2. Choose a game-server trial if you need a quick, low-maintenance test or a short event and can accept an expiry date.
  3. Choose a free VPS only for experimentation unless you have verified sustained CPU, memory, storage, IPv4, transfer and retention terms.
  4. Choose paid hosting or dedicated hardware when uptime, predictable performance, support and a stable community matter more than avoiding a monthly bill.

Before announcing a server, write down its end date, backup location, public address, mod versions, administrator contacts and migration plan. That small checklist prevents a “free” experiment from becoming an unexpected outage or a forced subscription.
