For a free, quick way to open, inspect, lightly edit, or convert a PSD, start with Photopea in your browser. Keep the PSD if you or someone else may need to edit the document; export PNG for lossless output or transparency, and JPEG when a smaller photographic copy is more useful. If the file depends on Photoshop-specific features, use Adobe Photoshop and check the result there.
Which PSD option fits your task?
| Option | Best for | What it offers | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photopea | Free browser-based viewing, light editing, and conversion | Photopea says it can open and save PSD files and export to common formats; it runs in a browser, so there is no installation step. Photopea describes its processing as local, saying files do not leave your device. | The local-processing statement is Photopea’s own claim, not an independent security audit. Check layers, fonts, effects, and overall appearance before handing off an edited file. |
| Adobe Photoshop | Files that rely on Photoshop-specific features or native-format fidelity | Adobe identifies PSD and PSB as the formats that preserve Photoshop features. | Photoshop is an editor, not a free viewer. If you are considering it, check current plan availability and terms for your region. |
For a preview or a straightforward export, Photopea is the practical starting point. Choose Photoshop when keeping Photoshop-specific capabilities intact matters more than using a free browser tool. Adobe’s format guidance says PSD is its default format and, alongside PSB, preserves Photoshop features; that does not guarantee every third-party app will render every file identically. Adobe’s Photoshop file-format guide was last updated March 27, 2026.

How to open, keep, or convert a PSD in Photopea
- Open the file: In Photopea, choose File > Open and select the PSD, or drag the file into the editor. Photopea documents both methods in its opening and saving guide.
- Keep an editable copy: Choose File > Save as PSD. Photopea says this saves the document structure, making PSD the appropriate choice when layers and further editing matter.
- Export a shareable copy: Choose File > Export As, then select a format such as JPG, PNG, SVG, or PDF. Exported images are for distribution; they are not a substitute for retaining the structured PSD.
- Check the exported result: Open it in the application or destination where it will be used. Keep the original PSD until you have confirmed the output’s appearance and any required editability.
Choose PNG or JPEG based on the output
| Format | Choose it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | You need transparency or lossless image output. | It may not be the best choice when minimizing file size is the priority. |
| JPEG | You are exporting a photograph or other image where a smaller file is useful and transparency is not needed. | JPEG uses lossy compression and does not support transparency. |
These format distinctions are described in Adobe’s file-format documentation. Neither exported format keeps the PSD’s full editable layer structure, so save the PSD separately when you may need to revise the work.
When to verify in Photoshop before sending a file
PSD files can contain Photoshop-specific features, and an editor’s ability to open a file does not by itself establish that every feature or visual detail will survive a round trip. Before replacing or sending an important file, check the rendered image and confirm whether the recipient needs editable layers or other Photoshop capabilities. Keep an untouched source copy while you do this.

Photopea’s documentation explains its opening, PSD saving, and export workflow, and a European Environment Agency guide dated July 31, 2025 demonstrates using Photopea to modify layered template text and export PNG or JPG. That public-sector example illustrates a workflow; it is not a comparative compatibility test. European Environment Agency Photopea guide
