But it does not automatically replace the cloud storage, hosted email, or online collaboration that may come with a Microsoft 365 subscription. Treat it as two decisions: choose an office suite for your files, then decide which cloud services you still need.
What a free office suite can replace
LibreOffice is a free, open-source desktop suite containing Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Base, and Math. It supports Open Document Format as well as common Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint formats. For writing, routine spreadsheets, and presentations stored on your laptop, it is a credible first option to try. The Document Foundation describes LibreOffice and its applications.

LibreOffice Help says it can open and save Microsoft Office formats, including Office Open XML formats such as DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX. That establishes format support, not identical results in every file. A complex layout, macro, or feature tied to a particular Microsoft workflow may need adjustment or may not behave the same way. “Old” is not a specification: the operating system, available memory, disk space, and condition of the machine matter. LibreOffice’s current Windows requirements list Windows 10 or 11, a Pentium-compatible PC, 256 MB RAM minimum (512 MB recommended), and up to 1.5 GB of available disk space. The requirements page lists different requirements for macOS and Linux. These are minimum product requirements, not a promise of good performance on a particular laptop or with a demanding workload. Check LibreOffice’s current system requirements against your machine before installing.

What “replace my cloud subscriptions” leaves out
Microsoft 365 Home subscriptions bundle productivity apps with 1 TB of cloud storage per user, among other plan features. Microsoft distinguishes these subscriptions from perpetual Office suites, which do not include cloud-backed features or services such as OneDrive, Exchange Online, and SharePoint Online. So replacing the desktop apps is not the same as replacing the whole subscription bundle. Microsoft explains the differences between Microsoft 365 and Office.
Before cancelling, list what you actually use: cloud file storage and syncing, an email account hosted through your plan, meetings, shared document editing, or access to files from multiple devices. LibreOffice installed on one laptop supplies none of those services automatically. You can keep an office suite locally while choosing separate providers—or retain a subscription for services you rely on.

How to decide whether switching fits
- Check the laptop first. Note its operating system, memory, and available disk space, then compare those details with LibreOffice’s requirements. Requirements alone cannot predict how quickly your particular files will open or run.
- Make a representative file set. Work from copies of the DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files you use most, including any with macros, elaborate formatting, or shared-workflow dependencies.
- Open, edit, and save those copies. Check page breaks, fonts, formulas, charts, presentation layouts, and any special functions you depend on. Reopen saved copies in the software used by collaborators if you exchange files with them.
- Audit the subscription separately. Identify which storage, email, meeting, and collaboration services are part of your plan and decide what replaces each one. Do not assume that changing office software migrates or preserves cloud-hosted data.
- Back up before changing software or files. LibreOffice recommends backing up your system and data before installation or removal. See LibreOffice’s installation guidance.
When to consider another desktop option
ONLYOFFICE is another candidate if you prefer a familiar office-editor workflow or want offline desktop apps alongside integrations. Its feature set and service options are described by the vendor; hosting and commercial terms can vary by deployment. Check the current requirements and terms for the specific version or service you intend to use. Desktop apps alone do not establish that a setup provides browser-based collaborative editing or a complete replacement for a cloud subscription.
