Buffer’s free Instagram hashtag generator turns a post topic, description, or draft caption into hashtag ideas. It is best used for brainstorming—not as a live Instagram trend tracker or a guarantee of reach. Review the suggestions, choose tags that fit your post, and use your own account insights to judge what works.
How Buffer’s Instagram hashtag generator works
On Buffer’s Instagram hashtag generator, enter a general topic, describe the post, or paste in text you have already written. The page prompts, “What’s your Instagram post about?” Buffer says that more detail can help produce more tailored suggestions. Its suggested workflow is to generate ideas, then publish or schedule with Buffer.

The output is a set of candidate hashtags to consider, not a prescribed list you need to use in full. Check that each tag describes the actual post and suits the audience you want to reach.
Are the suggestions based on real-time Instagram trends?
No. Buffer says this generator does not pull directly from real-time Instagram data. It describes the AI’s suggestions as reflecting popular and niche content trends, but that does not make the output a live trend report, a verified ranking, or evidence that a tag will improve reach. Buffer also cautions that AI responses can be inaccurate or misleading and says to review them before use.
Use the suggestions as starting points. Remove irrelevant or overly broad tags, and add tags you already know are appropriate for your subject or community. The tool cannot know from the prompt alone which hashtags perform best for your particular account.
How many hashtags can you generate and use?
Limits differ between Buffer pages and between generating suggestions and publishing a post. Buffer’s exact-title Instagram generator page says visitors can get up to five recommendations per day, while a free Buffer account allows unlimited hashtags. These are the terms stated on that page, checked October 7, 2026; product limits may change.

Separately, Buffer’s Help Center says its Instagram composer enforces a maximum of five hashtags per post. Buffer’s hashtag manager can store groups of up to 30 hashtags, but that group capacity does not mean you can publish all 30 in one post through the composer. Follow the composer’s limit when preparing a post.

- Start with the post itself. Describe its subject and context accurately rather than entering a vague topic.
- Review each suggestion. Keep tags that genuinely fit; discard unrelated suggestions instead of adding them just to fill a list.
- Build a considered set. Combine relevant tags for the subject with more specific tags or community terms you recognize. Do not assume the generator has verified their current popularity.
- Stay within the publishing limit. In Buffer’s Instagram composer, use no more than five hashtags on a post.
- Check account performance over time. Buffer’s December 3, 2024 strategy guidance recommends organizing ideas into categories and reviewing post insights to learn which sets work for your account. Use your own results rather than treating an AI suggestion as proof of performance.
How this differs from Buffer’s broader AI hashtag generator
Buffer also has a separate AI hashtag generator. That page lets users choose a platform, optionally specify a niche, and select a number of hashtags; it describes producing a mix of broad, niche, and community tags. It states a limit of five generations per day without an account. These are details of that broader tool page, not a replacement for the Instagram-specific page’s stated allowance of up to five recommendations daily and unlimited hashtags with a free Buffer account.

It can be useful when you need a quick starting list or want prompts for tags to investigate. It is less suitable if you need verified real-time trends, proven ranking data, or a strategy tailored automatically to your account. Buffer’s own guidance points toward treating generation as ideation and checking account insights to make later decisions.
