The best free image hosting website depends on what you need: a direct link for a forum or webpage, a public place to display photography, or a private library for your own pictures. Postimages is the clearest fit for straightforward image links and hotlinking; Imgur is for noncommercial public sharing; Flickr is a photo community with firm free-account limits; and Google Photos is a personal library, not a general-purpose hotlink host. There is no fifth service in this comparison with verified current first-party limits, so the useful shortlist is four rather than padding it with an unchecked recommendation.
How to choose a free image hosting service
Start with the destination for the image. A hotlink host gives you a URL that can display an image on another site. A photo community is designed for public viewing and discovery, while a cloud photo library organizes and shares your personal collection. These jobs are not interchangeable.

- Need a direct image link or an embed? Check that the service supports external display and that its rules allow your kind of website.
- Need a private collection? Confirm the service offers actual access controls. A hard-to-guess link is not the same as password protection.
- Need original files or long-term storage? Check download restrictions, quotas, and inactivity policies. A free account is not automatically an archive or backup.
- Using images commercially? Read the service’s terms for commercial hosting and the rights to the image itself. Hosting a file does not grant permission to use it.

Postimages is the most direct match when you want to upload an image and use its link on a forum, blog, or website. Its free offering permits uploads up to 32 MB and hotlinked images up to 1280 pixels. The plan page also lists 1,000 API units per month. Its FAQ says total uploads are unlimited and that images are not removed for inactivity, though the service reserves the right to contact users whose resource use is unusually high. These are service policies, not a guarantee that it is a permanent backup.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Postimages says uploads are not placed in a global catalog and that access is limited to people with the image link. But it does not offer password protection, and its FAQ cautions that it is probably unsuitable for collections requiring real privacy. Treat a shared URL as accessible to anyone who obtains it.
Metadata deserves attention: EXIF data is retained by default. Account holders can enable its removal, but anonymous uploads always keep original EXIF data. Strip location or other sensitive metadata before an anonymous upload if you do not want it shared. Postimages plan details and its FAQ describe the service’s limits and policies.

Imgur: for noncommercial public sharing
Imgur is a public image-sharing platform rather than a general-purpose website image CDN. Its forum-user FAQ recommends using its embed unit on a website or blog, but also says not to use Imgur as a CDN, for commercial image hosting, or on a site that makes money through ads or otherwise. That restriction is material for bloggers and publishers: do not assume that a free upload is permitted just because an embed works.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe same FAQ states a maximum of 50 uploads per IP address per hour. For permitted noncommercial sharing, follow the embed guidance and the service’s terms. Read the Imgur FAQ for Forum Users before using it on an external site.

Flickr: for public photography, not a free archive
Flickr suits photographers who want a public display space and a community around their images. Its free account is constrained: the Help Center page updated March 4, 2026, sets a limit of 1,000 uploaded items and 50 non-public photos or videos. Free members may post Safe content only and may not post commercial content. Flickr says material exceeding the limits may lead to suspension or deletion.
There is also a distinction between showing an image and retrieving its original file. Under Flickr’s April 2025 service update, free members cannot download original or large-size photos above 1024 pixels. Existing embeds and external links continue to work, but access to original-size content is restricted. That makes Flickr a poor choice if you need unrestricted original downloads or archival storage on a free account. Consult Flickr’s free-account limits and enforcement policy and its 2025 download update.

Google Photos: for a personal library and sharing
Google Photos is built around organizing and sharing a personal photo collection, not generating public hotlinks for a website. Google provides up to 15 GB of storage shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos. Photos and videos uploaded in Original quality count toward that shared quota, so other files in the same account can reduce the space available for photos.

Google says stored content might be deleted after Photos has been unused for two years or more and that it provides at least three months’ warning before deletion due to inactivity. An account that runs out of storage cannot save new photos and videos. These conditions make account activity and remaining storage worth monitoring if you rely on the library. Google’s Photos activity and storage help page explains the current policy.

Why this list has four services, not five
ImgBB, imgbox, Cloudinary, and Wikimedia Commons are possible candidates for different needs, from direct links and simple uploads to developer-controlled delivery or openly licensed media. Current official limits and terms for those services are not established here, so they cannot be responsibly ranked as verified free-tier recommendations. In particular, check official policies for hotlinking, commercial use, storage, and original downloads before uploading or building a workflow around any host.
Which service should you use?
- For a link or embed on a non-sensitive image: Start with Postimages, after checking its hotlink size limit and handling metadata appropriately.
- For noncommercial public sharing: Imgur can fit if its terms and recommended embed method match your use.
- For a public photography presence: Flickr offers community display, but its free-account caps and original-download restrictions may not suit a working portfolio or archive.
- For your own organized photo library: Google Photos is the relevant type of service; track the shared account quota and keep the account active.
For private or sensitive images, none of these should be treated as a substitute for a service with explicit access controls just because a link is unlisted or difficult to guess.
