For many freelance projects, Happo itself may be the best free option: its pricing page lists an ongoing free plan with 5,000 monthly snapshots in Chrome, visual and accessibility testing, and no credit card. If you need a different workflow, consider Playwright for self-managed screenshot comparisons or Percy for hosted visual review. Compare what each service counts—not just the headline quota—before switching.
First check whether Happo’s free plan fits
Happo’s pricing page describes its free tier as having no time limit and no credit-card requirement. It includes 5,000 snapshots a month in Chrome, along with visual and accessibility testing. Happo says a free account pauses after it reaches the monthly quota until the next cycle or an upgrade. These are vendor-listed terms and can change; check Happo’s current pricing page before making a decision.

Estimate your snapshot use
Happo defines one snapshot as one screenshot of one component variant in one browser. Its suggested estimate is:
component variants × browsers × Happo runs per month
#1 Best Overall
For example, 50 component variants tested across three browsers in 100 runs would be 15,000 snapshots a month, using Happo’s example calculation. The free tier lists Chrome, so do not assume its allowance provides the same browser coverage as a paid plan.
When an upgrade may be the straightforward choice
If you depend on Happo’s hosted review workflow and simply exceed the free quota, compare the paid allowance with your measured use. The pricing page lists Starter at $149/month for 50,000 snapshots, Growth at $399/month for 150,000, and Pro at $749/month for 300,000; it states paid overage at $0.006 per snapshot. These are vendor-listed USD prices, not India-localized quotes. The available material does not establish rupee billing, taxes, payment methods or regional availability, so confirm the terms at checkout rather than converting the figures into a presumed Indian price.

Compare the alternatives by workflow and counted usage
Happo and Percy are hosted services; Playwright’s screenshot comparison feature runs within a test workflow you manage. Their usage units and workflows differ, so the figures below are not a like-for-like value comparison.
| Option | Best fit | Quota or usage unit to check | Trade-off to evaluate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Happo free | You want to keep an existing hosted review workflow and your usage fits the free allowance. | 5,000 monthly snapshots; one snapshot is a component variant in one browser. The free plan lists Chrome. | Happo says the free account pauses at its quota until the next cycle or upgrade. Check whether the browser coverage you need is included. |
| Playwright screenshot comparisons | You already use Playwright and want screenshot checks inside your tests. | The cited Playwright documentation describes screenshot comparisons, not a hosted monthly quota. | You own baseline management, rendering stability, CI maintenance and the review experience. The native feature is not automatically equivalent to a hosted visual-testing service. |
| Percy free | You want hosted visual review and its supported integration suits your project. | Percy documents 5,000 monthly screenshots. Its accounting counts page or component, browser and responsive-width combinations. | Calculate consumption across browsers and responsive widths; a Percy screenshot is not necessarily equivalent to a Happo snapshot. |
| Chromatic | You have a component-centric workflow and want to evaluate a dedicated hosted tool. | Current plan details are not established here; verify its pricing page. | Check current terms and fit before comparing price or quota. |
Use Playwright when you want to manage the comparison workflow
Playwright documents visual comparisons using screenshot snapshots. This can be practical if Playwright is already part of your test suite and you are comfortable maintaining the surrounding workflow. Its documentation establishes the screenshot-comparison feature; it does not establish feature parity with Happo or another hosted visual-review service.

Before choosing this route, decide where baselines will live, how you will review changes, which browsers and viewport sizes to cover, and how your CI environment will keep page rendering consistent. Those operational choices determine how much maintenance the self-managed route adds.

When Percy is a better hosted alternative
Percy’s documentation lists a free plan with 5,000 monthly screenshots, unlimited users and unlimited projects. It counts screenshots for an individual page or component, browser and responsive-width combination. That means a test matrix with more browser or width combinations can consume the allowance faster than a simple count of pages suggests. Check the Percy plans and billing documentation for current terms and accounting details.

- Stay with Happo if its Chrome-only free coverage and 5,000-snapshot monthly allowance fit your work, and you want to avoid migrating an established review process.
- Try Playwright comparisons if Playwright is already in your stack and you prefer to own baselines and review workflow rather than add a hosted service.
- Evaluate Percy if you need hosted review and its integration fits, after calculating screenshot use across pages or components, browsers and responsive widths.
- Evaluate Chromatic for component-oriented work, but confirm current plan details directly instead of assuming a free allowance or price.
Happo says it integrates with Storybook, Playwright, Cypress, a generic API and CI systems; its product materials describe responsive viewport capture, side-by-side and diff review, and color-delta tolerance. It lists Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge and iOS Safari, with browser availability depending on plan. These are vendor-described capabilities, so check the plan and integration details relevant to your setup on Happo’s pricing page and its Playwright workflow page.

If what you need is a rendered page screenshot rather than visual-regression review of component variants, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: one GET request returns a screenshot or PDF, and only clean shots are billed. It is a screenshot API, not a replacement for a visual-diff review workflow.
For example, replace the URL with the page you want to capture:
Quick Recap
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts and failed loads are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also has an MCP server for AI agents, with tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
