What “free hosting” usually includes

Backups are a separate question from uptime
Several guides report that free plans do not include automatic backups. If a plugin corrupts the world, an update fails or the provider removes an idle instance, you may have no recovery point. Before inviting players, export the world yourself on a schedule you can maintain. If the panel offers downloads, keep copies on a different device; a backup stored on the same free account does not protect you from account or instance deletion.

Home hosting also exposes your public IP address to players and consumes your upload bandwidth. Use a separate machine or network segment where possible, keep the operating system and server software patched, and avoid opening more ports than the game requires. If your provider uses CGNAT, ask whether it offers a public IPv4 address or use a relay or VPN design you understand and trust.
Free Valheim websites
Comparison lists sometimes advertise free Valheim instances on shared or sponsored infrastructure. The reported conditions include shorter uptime, restricted mod support or automatic sleep after inactivity. Some guides point to a free tier from Oracle Cloud as a way to run your own server. The reported caveats are significant: available machines may use ARM64, which works for Java or Paper Minecraft but can be incompatible with software compiled only for x86; and idle instances have reportedly been reclaimed in the past. Those points were not confirmed against Oracle’s current terms, so verify architecture, availability, reclaim policy and regional capacity before committing a world.

What to check before choosing any free host
- Sleep behavior: Find the idle timeout, whether shutdown is automatic, how a player wakes the server and the typical restart delay.
- Resources: Check RAM, CPU allocation and whether resources are shared or guaranteed. For Valheim, ask about per-core performance rather than core count alone.
- Capacity: Confirm simultaneous player slots, daily play limits and any queue at peak hours.
- Storage: Compare the world, modpack and log footprint with the quota. A 4 GB cap can disappear quickly with large modpacks.
- Files and access: Determine whether you can download the world and whether SFTP or an equivalent transfer method is provided.

Common problems and practical fixes
“The server is offline when we try to join.”
Check whether the host sleeps after inactivity and start it from the control panel. If there is a queue, wait for the instance rather than repeatedly clicking start. For self-hosting, confirm that the host PC is powered on and the server process is running.

Look for shared-CPU contention, high entity counts, heavy plugins or a slow single core. Reduce simulation-heavy mods, cap view or simulation distance where supported, remove runaway entities and test at a quieter time. If the issue follows peak usage, a guaranteed-resource plan is the durable fix.
“Nobody outside my home can connect.”
Verify the forwarded ports and the server’s local address, then check whether your ISP places you behind CGNAT. A public IP or a supported relay may be required. Do not expose additional administration ports just to make testing easier.

On a trial or free instance, check retention and expiry rules immediately. If you have a downloaded backup, restore it on a new instance. Without an external copy, recovery may be impossible after deletion or corruption.
