There is no verified free Factorio server service from Wube Software. In practice, you have three choices: an independent host’s restricted free tier, a time-limited VPS trial, or running Factorio’s official headless server yourself. Restricted third-party free tiers
These services run the game for you without an upfront payment, but the provider controls the limits. Common restrictions include a maximum session length, a fixed number of players, queued startup, advertisements, limited memory, or suspension when nobody is online. Terms can change without notice, and the claims below have not been independently verified on the providers’ own sites.

Trials that require a cancellation plan
A VPS trial gives you a temporary virtual machine rather than a permanent free game server. The machine may be full-featured, but the allowance expires after a stated period or when a promotional credit is consumed. You must read billing terms and remove the server before the trial ends if you do not intend to pay.
Self-hosting the official headless server
Wube distributes a headless Factorio server designed to run without graphics or sound. You install it on a computer you control, then friends connect to that computer. There is no provider-imposed session timer or player-slot limit, although practical limits still come from CPU, memory, storage, bandwidth, and your internet connection.

What the advertised free tiers provide
These are leads, not guarantees. Confirm current limits, data retention, mod support, and shutdown rules on the provider’s own status and terms pages before uploading a valuable world.
Factorio Zone
Search summaries describe Factorio Zone as free to run and report a four-hour session limit. The service states that it is not affiliated with Factorio or Wube Software. A four-hour ceiling can work for a short co-op evening, but it is unsuitable for a persistent factory unless you can save, restart, and reconnect without losing progress. The summary does not establish player slots, memory, mod policy, backups, or whether the limit resets automatically.

Skynode
A Steam community post says Skynode allowed up to five people at once, with three hours of uptime and an extension to as much as 24 hours after watching advertisements. The post is described as roughly 1,400 days old, so those figures should be treated as historical rather than current. Do not plan a campaign around them without confirming today’s dashboard limits.
Gaming4Free
Gaming4Free lists a free tier with 2 GB of RAM, 16 player slots, and no credit-card requirement. It also advertises support for Space Age, Bob’s mods, and Krastorio 2. Those are provider marketing claims, not tested measurements. Ask how much RAM is actually available to the Factorio process, whether the slot count is simultaneous or nominal, and whether mod files survive a stop or migration.
AxentHost
AxentHost advertises free servers with up to 16 GB of RAM and no card requirement. No independent evidence here confirms that allocation, CPU share, uptime, storage persistence, or mod compatibility. “Up to” may describe a best-case pool rather than what every free account receives, so check the exact plan shown at sign-up.
Why a VPS “free trial” is different
Listings for Kamatera describe a 30-day trial with a $100 credit; listings for VPSServer.com describe 30 days of services valued up to $100. The $0.00 figures shown in comparison tables refer to those promotions, not to an indefinitely free Factorio instance.

A trial VPS can be a good test of the headless server because you receive operating-system access and can choose resources. It also introduces obligations:
- Determine whether a payment method is required and whether unused credit expires.
- Set a calendar reminder several days before the trial ends.
- Stop and delete the virtual machine, snapshots, attached disks, and reserved addresses if you do not want charges.
- Keep a local copy of the save and server configuration before deletion.
- Read bandwidth, backup, and overage terms; a trial credit may not cover every service.
Because the allowance is temporary, a trial is best for learning, migration testing, or a one-month event—not for promising friends permanent world availability.

Running the official headless server on your own machine removes third-party session and slot caps. “Free” still has an economic meaning: a home computer consumes electricity and your internet plan must support the traffic. A spare desktop, mini PC, or always-on Linux machine can host the process; a paid VPS supplies the hardware in a data center but is no longer free.
Software and operating-system requirements
The official Factorio Wiki says the dedicated server starts with the --start-server command-line option and that the headless package omits graphics and sounds to reduce download size. The same guidance says current Factorio requires glibc 2.31. CentOS/RHEL 7 provide glibc 2.17, so those older distributions may need an upgrade or additional compatibility work. Choose a supported operating system rather than assuming any Linux image will run the binary.

Do not hard-code a version from an old guide. Stable and experimental releases change, and a third-party guide’s references to a particular 2.0 build and a 2.1 opt-in branch were not confirmed as current. Download the server build that matches the clients who will connect, using Wube’s current distribution instructions.
Prepare a separate server directory
Keep the executable, saves, mods, and configuration in a directory that is backed up independently of the operating system. Create a non-administrator account for routine operation. Give that account ownership of the Factorio files, restrict write access to other users, and reserve enough disk space for automatic saves and mod downloads.
How to start a headless server on a home computer
- Install the matching headless package. Use Wube’s current server download and place it in the dedicated server directory. Confirm that the binary runs on your operating system and that the glibc requirement is met.
- Create or copy a save. A new world can be generated from the server interface or command line; an existing single-player save can be copied into the server’s save directory. Make a backup before the first multiplayer launch.
- Create server settings. Wube’s official factorio-data repository contains an example settings file. Copy it, then set the server name, description, visibility, maximum players, autosave behavior, and password appropriate for your group. Remove credentials from files that other users can read.
- Start the process. Run the headless executable with
--start-serverand point it at the save. Keep the terminal open for the first launch so you can read errors, map generation messages, and the listening address. - Set the network port. The commonly documented default is UDP port
34197. Because that number comes from a third-party guide summary, verify the port in the current Factorio Wiki and your server configuration. If you change it, friends must use the same port. - Allow the process through the firewall. Permit inbound UDP on the selected port only. Leave unrelated ports closed, and bind administrative access to your local network or a secure management method.
- Configure the router. Forward the selected UDP port from the router to the server’s fixed local IP address. Without a stable local address, a DHCP change can silently break the forwarding rule.
- Test locally and externally. Join from the host or another computer on the same network first. Then ask a friend outside your network to connect using your public address and port. A local success does not prove that the router or ISP permits inbound traffic.
- Make it restartable. Run the server under a service manager or terminal multiplexer so it can restart after a reboot. Test a controlled stop, confirm that the latest autosave exists, and document the start command.
Visibility, credentials, and the official matching service
The example server settings file’s comments describe publishing a public server to Factorio’s official matching service. That feature requires Factorio.com login credentials or a token. A private server does not need public listing: friends can connect directly to your address, or you can share a private connection method. If you enable public visibility, use a token where supported, keep credentials out of screenshots and chat, and rotate them if exposed.
Mods, Space Age, and version compatibility
Every player must use a compatible game version and the same mod set. A provider’s claim that it supports Space Age or named mods means little unless it can install the exact versions and preserve them between restarts. On a self-hosted machine, copy the mod package and configuration with the save, update deliberately, and keep a rollback backup before changing Factorio or a major mod.

When a client cannot join, first compare the displayed game version, mod names, and mod versions. A server that starts successfully can still reject players because one mod is missing, disabled, or newer on one side.
Common failures and fixes
The server stops after a few hours
That behavior usually indicates a free-tier session policy rather than a Factorio crash. Check the provider’s timer and save immediately before the cutoff. If persistent uptime matters, move the save to a home machine or paid VPS.

Verify the server is listening on UDP 34197 or your chosen port, confirm the operating-system firewall rule, check router forwarding to the correct local IP, and test whether your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT. If inbound connections are blocked, a VPS or a private overlay network may be necessary.
The binary will not launch on Linux
Check the glibc version first. The Factorio Wiki’s stated requirement is glibc 2.31; an older distribution such as CentOS/RHEL 7 ships with 2.17. Upgrade to a supported distribution rather than replacing system libraries casually.
The world or mods disappeared
Confirm that the service is using the intended save and data directories. Restore the newest verified backup, then check whether the free provider deletes inactive instances or ephemeral storage. Keep copies outside the host.
Performance degrades as the factory grows
Watch simulation speed, CPU saturation, memory use, and disk latency while the factory is busy. Reduce unnecessary server-side load, schedule saves for a sensible interval, and move to stronger hardware when the simulation—not the network—becomes the bottleneck. A provider’s advertised RAM alone does not reveal CPU contention.

- Short, occasional sessions: A genuinely free tier may be acceptable if everyone understands the timer and you keep independent saves.
- A month-long project: A VPS trial can provide full control, but set an expiry reminder and treat the world as temporary unless you convert to a paid plan.
- A persistent private world with an unused PC: Home self-hosting gives the most control and avoids hosting-account limits.
- Players in different regions or a blocked home connection: A paid VPS is usually simpler than fighting router or ISP restrictions.
- Public listing and many unknown players: Use stronger access controls, backups, and monitoring than a free shared tier normally provides.
Bottom line
No verified Wube-operated free hosting option was identified. Independent free tiers can work for brief experiments, but their limits and advertised specifications are uncertain. Trial VPS offers are temporary promotions, not permanent free servers. For a dependable, uncapped Factorio world, run Wube’s headless server on hardware you control—or budget for a VPS—and plan the UDP port, backups, updates, and security from the beginning.
