How to Play Death Dealer in Murderville: Rules, Roles, and Winning Strategies

“Death Dealer” is a role in the card game Murderville, not the name of a single universally defined game. In Murderville, the Death Dealer deals six cards to every player, creates the Shared Armory from the rest of the deck, and begins as the first Challenger. This guide explains both official play styles—Basic Bitch Style and True Killer Style—plus the decisions that matter when you are dealing, challenging, wagering, or defending a dwindling hand.

A separate game called Death Dealers is a card-based tabletop role-playing game by BdotLively. It is described as a downloadable beta/in-development RPG that uses a standard deck. Its rules are different, so do not use this article as its rulebook.

What the Death Dealer does

The Murderville rules page defines the Death Dealer as the person who deals the cards and starts the first challenge. It is usually the player who suggested playing. The role is temporary: after a completed match, play moves to the player on the right, counter-clockwise.

  • Player count: 2 or more.
  • Starting hand: six cards per player.
  • Shared Armory: all undealt cards, used for replacement draws.
  • Opening action: the Death Dealer is the first Challenger.
  • Normal objective: be the last player who still has cards.

The role does not give the dealer special combat power. Its advantages are information and initiative: you know the deal has been made and you choose the first matchup.

Set up a Murderville game

  1. Choose the style. Use Basic Bitch Style for the shorter, simpler ruleset. Choose True Killer Style when the group wants wagering, bluffing, and more deliberate risk decisions.
  2. Select the Death Dealer. The person who proposed the game normally takes the role, although the group can choose anyone.
  3. Deal six cards to each player. Keep hands private unless a card effect or the rules requires a reveal.
  4. Make the Shared Armory. Put every undealt card in a draw supply accessible to all players.
  5. Prepare a discard pile. Cards used in matches go there. If the Shared Armory runs out, the discard pile can replenish it as directed by the rules.
  6. Seat the players and identify the direction. After each completed match, the next turn moves to the player on the right, counter-clockwise.
  7. Start the first match. The Death Dealer acts as the first Challenger.

Before dealing, agree which printed version of the cards and rules you are using. Specialty-card outcomes and the Coin of Fate are edge cases, and the current card text controls if a card’s wording differs from an older explanation.

Basic Bitch Style: complete turn sequence

Basic Bitch Style uses the six-card deal, Shared Armory, replacement draws, and the last-player-standing objective without the additional wager decisions of True Killer Style.

1. The Challenger starts the match

The Challenger has two normal openings:

  • Play face up first. Put one card face up to begin the matchup.
  • Call out a target. Name or point to another player and tell them, “Throw down!” The target must play a card.

A Challenger who chooses a target is selecting the opponent whose card will be compared. The target does not decline a standard challenge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Both players reveal a card

Each participant reveals one card. Compare the cards’ Kill Levels. The higher Kill Level wins the normal matchup. Resolve any printed card effect according to the card and then handle the replacement draw.

3. The winner replaces the played card

The winner draws one card from the Shared Armory to replace the card played in the match, in addition to any card effect that changes the hand. This draw keeps the winner’s hand from shrinking after an ordinary victory. If the Shared Armory is empty, use the discard pile to replenish it under the game’s rules.

4. Resolve a tie

A tie is not an automatic win for either player. Reveal additional cards until the tie is broken, following the same comparison process. The cards used in the tied sequence are still played cards and ultimately belong in the discard flow.

5. Eliminate a player with no cards

A player who runs out of cards is eliminated. Since the objective is to be the last player with cards, every replacement draw and every special effect matters when a hand reaches its final card.

6. Pass the next challenge

Once the match is complete, move play to the player on the right, counter-clockwise. The new Challenger then begins the next match.

Special standoffs and the Coin of Fate

Two situations use the Coin of Fate rather than an ordinary Kill Level comparison.

Matching Specialty Cards

If both players reveal matching Specialty Cards, the Coin of Fate decides the standoff. A Death-side result eliminates the Challenger; a Life-side result eliminates the target. For this Specialty-card standoff, the winner draws two cards, subject to the number of cards still available and the remaining opponents.

A tie on both players’ last card

If both players are playing their last card and those cards tie, the Coin of Fate is also used. The Death-side result eliminates the Challenger, while the Life-side result eliminates the target. The winner draws three cards, subject to the remaining opponents and available cards.

These are unusually consequential outcomes. Check the current Murderville rules page and the wording on the cards you are using before applying a house interpretation, especially if an older deck or reprint uses different terminology.

True Killer Style: wagering and bluffing

True Killer keeps the same six-card starting hands and Shared Armory but adds an optional wager before the face-up card begins the match. This gives the targeted player a way to increase the stakes and gives the Challenger several ways to respond.

1. The target decides whether to wager

When targeted, the player may wager one additional card before the face-up card starts the match. The wager is not mandatory. Declining protects the hand but gives up the chance to put extra pressure on the Challenger.

2. The Challenger chooses a response

The Challenger has three rule-supported options:

  • Match the wager. Put up the required additional card and continue with the increased stakes.
  • Pretend to match it. Use the reverse bluff allowed by True Killer rules. The Challenger appears to accept the wager while attempting to gain an information or psychological advantage.
  • Walk away. Forfeit the round. The target receives a card from the Shared Armory.

Walking away is not a neutral pass. It ends that round, rewards the target with a Shared Armory card, and moves the game onward. Use it when the cost of contesting the wager is worse than giving the opponent that replacement card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. A face-up opening can block the wager

If the Challenger plays a card face up before the target wagers, the wager is blocked. This timing rule makes the opening choice important: acting immediately removes the target’s optional escalation, while calling out a target leaves room for the wager decision.

4. Account for wagered cards after the match

Losses can cost wagered cards, so a True Killer hand is not measured only by its current Kill Levels. A player who repeatedly risks extra cards may create a powerful immediate attack but become vulnerable after a loss. Track what is actually at stake before accepting or matching a wager.

Winning strategy for Basic Bitch Style

Protect your hand size

Because elimination occurs when a player has no cards, hand size is the most reliable resource to monitor. A high Kill Level is useful, but spending cards in a sequence of ties or losing a final-card matchup can be more damaging than losing one ordinary exchange. Avoid treating every challenge as a must-win contest when the expected cost is a shrinking hand.

Choose the opening that fits your information

Playing face up first gives up the ability to surprise a target with a callout, but it starts the comparison immediately. Calling a target forces that player to reveal a card and can pressure a player whose hand appears weak, but it also gives the target the initiative to choose the card they want to throw down. Decide whether immediate control or opponent selection matters more in the position you have.

Use the Shared Armory as a tempo resource

Every normal win produces a replacement draw. That means a player who wins repeatedly can maintain hand size while opponents lose cards. Conversely, a depleted armory makes every draw less dependable and increases the value of preserving cards. Notice how many cards remain in the Shared Armory and whether a discard-pile replenishment is approaching.

Plan for ties

A tie consumes additional cards and can turn a seemingly safe matchup into a hand-size emergency. When your opponent has few cards, a tie may be dangerous for both players because the next reveal can decide elimination. Keep specialty-card and last-card possibilities in mind rather than assuming every tie is resolved by the next ordinary card.

Read the rotation

The next Challenger is the player on the right, counter-clockwise. You can therefore anticipate who will act after the current match and avoid spending a strong card merely to create a temporary advantage that the next Challenger can immediately attack. Rotation awareness is especially valuable late in the game, when one player’s turn order determines who is forced to expose a final card.

Winning strategy for True Killer Style

Separate card strength from wager value

A card can be worth more as protection than as a wager. Before risking an extra card, ask what your hand looks like if the match is lost and the wagered card is gone. True Killer rewards pressure only when the remaining hand can survive the downside.

Use wager decisions to gather information

A target who wagers immediately may be confident, desperate, or attempting to make you believe they are confident. A target who declines may be protecting a strong hand or avoiding a costly loss. These are deductions from the wager mechanic, not guaranteed tells. Compare the choice with the player’s earlier behavior rather than treating any single wager as proof of card strength.

When matching is sensible

Match when the additional card does not endanger your ability to stay in the game and the matchup is favorable enough to justify the larger stake. Matching solely to avoid looking weak is poor resource management: the rules make the wager a real cost, not a theatrical announcement.

When a reverse bluff can work

The reverse bluff is strongest when the opponent must decide whether your apparent match is credible and when your hand can withstand either outcome. It should be used as a controlled deception, not as a default response. If losing the wager would leave you with one vulnerable card, a straightforward walk-away decision may be safer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When walking away is correct

Walking away gives the target a Shared Armory card, so it improves the opponent’s hand. That concession can still be correct when matching would risk multiple cards or expose you to elimination. Compare the guaranteed cost of the walk-away reward with the possible cost of contesting the wager.

Block wagers when timing is more valuable than selection

Playing face up before the target wagers prevents escalation. Use that opening when you have a card you are comfortable exposing or when the target’s extra-card option would be especially damaging. Calling a target instead is better when forcing a particular opponent into a decision is worth leaving the wager open.

Worked examples

Ordinary Basic-style challenge

The Death Dealer calls a target. Both players reveal one card. The Challenger’s card has the higher Kill Level, so the Challenger wins, resolves any printed effect, draws one replacement card from the Shared Armory, and places the played cards into the discard flow. The next match passes to the player on the right.

A tie that continues

Two cards show equal Kill Levels. Neither player wins yet. Each player reveals another card, and the comparison continues until one side is higher. If the sequence leaves a player with no cards, that player is eliminated under the normal hand-size rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

True Killer walk-away

A target wagers one additional card. The Challenger decides not to match or reverse-bluff and walks away. The Challenger forfeits that round, and the target draws one card from the Shared Armory. No Kill Level comparison is needed for the forfeited round.

Last-card tie

Both players reveal their final cards and the cards tie. This is not an ordinary tie sequence: the Coin of Fate decides. A Death-side result eliminates the Challenger; a Life-side result eliminates the target. The winner draws three cards, subject to the cards and opponents still available.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Giving the Death Dealer a permanent advantage: The role starts the first challenge but does not create a separate power level. Fix: apply the same card and elimination rules to the dealer as to everyone else.
  • Dealing fewer or more than six cards: Both official styles begin with six cards per player. Fix: restart the deal if the setup is wrong.
  • Forgetting replacement draws: In a normal win, the winner draws one card from the Shared Armory. Fix: resolve card effects first, then perform the replacement draw before passing the turn.
  • Letting a target refuse a Basic-style challenge: The target must play a card after being told, “Throw down!” Fix: reserve optional refusal for the True Killer walk-away decision after a wager.
  • Allowing a wager after an early face-up play: A face-up opening by the Challenger blocks the wager. Fix: establish the opening order before the target places an extra card.
  • Treating a walk-away as free: The target receives a Shared Armory card. Fix: give that draw immediately and record the forfeited round.
  • Using publisher percentages as odds: The 66/34 and 31/69 labels have no stated measurement method. Fix: use them only as descriptions of intended style, not as predictive statistics.
  • Merging Murderville with the Death Dealers RPG: Similar names do not mean shared rules. Fix: confirm the publisher and game before starting.

Which style should your group choose?

Choose Basic Bitch Style when players are learning, when you want the shortest decision tree, or when the group prefers the tension of card comparisons without wagering negotiations. Choose True Killer Style when players enjoy reading opponents, managing risk, and accepting that a walk-away can strengthen the other side. Both styles use the same six-card setup, Shared Armory, Kill Level comparisons, elimination rule, and counter-clockwise turn movement; True Killer adds the wager layer that changes how every challenge is evaluated.
