Recommended Free Tools
Free hosting is suitable for a private test bot, a learning project, or a small utility bot in one server. It is a poor fit for a public bot that must remain online around the clock. Free services commonly sleep after inactivity, pause when monthly credits run out, reclaim idle resources, or change their allowances for new accounts.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
If uptime matters, choose either a low-cost paid managed host or a VPS. A managed platform removes most Linux administration and charges a predictable monthly fee. A VPS gives you the most control and headroom, but you must secure, update, monitor, and troubleshoot the server yourself.

A Discord bot is not a static website. It normally maintains a long-lived gateway connection to Discord, listens for events, and responds whenever a command or interaction arrives. A host that stops the process when nobody visits a web page will eventually disconnect the bot, even if the service is advertised as free.
When comparing plans, separate “no monthly charge” from “always available.” A free allowance can still be useful if your bot is private, experimental, or only needed during development. It becomes risky when members expect commands to work at any time.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Persistence: the process must keep running and be able to reconnect after a network interruption.
- Runtime allowance: credits or instance-hour limits must cover the entire month, not just occasional tests.
- Memory: a basic bot may fit in roughly 256–512 MB of RAM, but this is an unverified rule of thumb and not a capacity guarantee.
- Storage: databases, caches, downloaded files, and logs need storage that survives a restart.
- Administration: a VPS requires Linux, firewall, updates, backups, and process supervision; a managed platform handles much of that work.
Free-tier terms change frequently. Treat every allowance and price below as a reported figure that should be checked on the provider’s current pricing page before you deploy a production bot.
Choose the hosting type by your bot’s job
| Bot situation | Best starting point | Reason | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Learning, prototyping, or a private test server | Free tier | No recurring cost while you learn deployment and Discord events | Sleep, credit exhaustion, or a changed allowance |
| Small private bot used occasionally | Free tier with restart testing | Downtime may be acceptable if nobody depends on it | It may be offline when you need it |
| Public bot with modest traffic | Paid managed PaaS or inexpensive bot host | Git-based deployment and less server administration | Monthly billing and platform limits |
| Public bot needing custom services, persistent data, or more headroom | VPS | Full control over runtime, storage, networking, and process supervision | You are responsible for Linux security and maintenance |
| Music, image generation, dashboards, queues, or many guilds | Paid plan or VPS sized for the workload | Extra CPU, RAM, storage, and external services are easier to reserve | A tiny free instance can become unstable or exhaust its allowance |
Free hosting options and their catches
Oracle Cloud Always Free
Vendor guides describe an always-free ARM instance with up to 4 OCPUs and 24 GB of RAM. On paper, that is substantially more capacity than a simple Discord bot needs, and one instance could run several lightweight bots.
The trade-off is that this is a real Linux server rather than a one-click bot runtime. You must create the instance, configure networking and security lists, open only the required ports, install your language runtime, and keep the process alive. Reports also say inactive free resources may be reclaimed. The current terms and reclamation behavior were not verified against a primary Oracle page, so do not treat the capacity as guaranteed.
This option makes sense when you are comfortable administering Linux and want VPS-like control without a normal monthly charge. It is not the easiest choice for somebody who only wants to upload a repository and walk away.
Fly.io
Recent vendor material reports that new signups do not receive a general free tier. A payment card is required and usage is billed on a pay-as-you-go basis. A comparison published in 2026 reported the smallest always-on shared Machine, using a shared CPU and 256 MB of RAM, at about $2.28 per month.

Deployment is CLI-based, which suits developers who already use Git and terminal tools. Older accounts with “legacy-hobby” allowances are reported to retain free usage, but that should not be assumed for a new account. For a new bot, treat Fly.io as a low-cost paid option rather than as free hosting.
Railway
Railway’s pricing documentation is reported to include a Free plan with $1 of credit per month. A $5 first-month credit has also been reported. When the credit is consumed, services pause until the next monthly allowance. One reviewer estimated that $1 covers only a few hours of runtime, so the free plan is useful for short tests rather than a continuously connected production bot.
The reported $5-per-month Hobby plan is the practical minimum for an always-on bot. It keeps the Git-based workflow and avoids the manual Linux administration of a VPS, but the exact included usage and any overage rules should be confirmed before relying on it.
Render
Reports for Render’s free service describe 512 MB of memory and 750 instance hours per month. The free service spins down after 15 minutes without activity. A Discord bot’s gateway connection is itself the activity that needs to remain persistent, so a sleeping service disconnects the bot. Sending web requests or using an uptime pinger does not turn a sleep-prone worker into a dependable always-on service.
The reported Starter plan costs $7 per month and is the least expensive always-on choice in the cited Render material. Confirm the current service type, runtime limits, and pricing: web services, background workers, and other products can have different rules.

Replit
An Always On launch post from more than three years ago described running a Discord bot in about 30 seconds on a paid Hacker plan at that time. Current pricing snippets list a Core plan at $20 per month when billed annually. The free tier is described for personal projects with a single background task, but whether a bot can run continuously on that free plan was not confirmed.
Community discussions report bots going offline and users trying uptime pingers. A pinger is a workaround, not an uptime guarantee; it cannot fix a platform policy that stops background processes or a process that crashes. Use Replit’s free tier for experimentation only unless the current plan explicitly states that your bot workload may run continuously.
Discord-focused bot hosts
Specialist hosts such as Discloud and bot-hosting.net are reported to offer free plans with resource caps or limits on the number of bots. Their advantage is a workflow designed around Discord processes. Their disadvantage is that limits, suspension rules, storage behavior, and account requirements differ widely. Read the current terms, check whether the process sleeps, and verify how logs and environment variables are handled before moving a public bot there.
Unverified free-tier claims
Search summaries have described a Northflank $0 sandbox with always-on services, but the limits and source page were not verified. A 2021 community comment mentioned a free micro instance on Google Cloud, but that information is dated and was not confirmed. Do not select either option solely from those claims; require a current, provider-published allowance before treating it as a free solution.

Sleep after inactivity
Some platforms stop a service after a period without HTTP traffic. Discord’s gateway traffic does not necessarily count as the activity that prevents a web service from sleeping. When the process is stopped, the bot leaves the gateway and appears offline until the platform starts it again.

Credits or hours run out
A credit-based plan can look free at the beginning of a month and then pause unexpectedly. Calculate the cost of running continuously: a service that consumes paid compute every hour needs an allowance that covers the full month, not merely a few test deployments.
Free resources are reclaimed
Some providers reserve the right to reclaim idle or inactive free instances. If your bot is important, keep backups of its code and data and make sure you can recreate the service on another host.
The process crashes
Out-of-memory errors, an uncaught exception, an expired token, a failed dependency installation, or an API rate-limit mistake can all look like “the host is down.” Configure automatic restarts, retain logs, and test the bot from a second Discord account or server.

A simple command bot may fit in a few hundred megabytes, but music playback, image generation, dashboards, databases, queues, and many guilds increase CPU, memory, storage, and network requirements. The 256–512 MB estimate is only a rough, unverified rule of thumb.
Pre-deployment checklist
- Decide whether an outage of minutes, hours, or a full day is acceptable.
- Count the servers (guilds) and estimate command frequency, scheduled jobs, and external API calls.
- Measure memory during the busiest realistic task rather than relying on idle usage.
- Keep the Discord token in an environment variable or secret manager, never in a public repository.
- Confirm that the plan supports a worker or long-running process, not only a sleeping web service.
- Check whether the filesystem is persistent. Store important data in a database or external storage with backups.
- Find out what happens when the allowance is exhausted: pause, suspension, deletion, or automatic billing.
- Prepare a second deployment target so you can migrate if a free tier changes.
How to deploy a bot on a free tier
- Make the bot restartable. The program should exit with a useful error when configuration is missing and reconnect after a temporary gateway or network failure. Test it locally by stopping and starting the process.
- Separate secrets from code. Create an environment variable such as
DISCORD_TOKENin the host’s secret or environment-variable settings. Rotate the token immediately if it appears in a repository, log, screenshot, or chat message. - Deploy as a worker. Select the provider’s long-running worker or background-process option when one exists. A static site or sleep-prone web service is the wrong process type for a gateway-connected bot.
- Set a restart policy. Enable the platform’s automatic restart behavior, or use a process manager on a server. This handles crashes but does not overcome a provider’s sleep or credit policy.
- Watch the first full day. Check startup logs, gateway reconnects, memory use, CPU use, and the provider’s remaining hours or credits. Test a command after several hours without visiting any web endpoint.
- Test failure recovery. Restart the service, revoke and replace a test token, interrupt the network if possible, and confirm that the bot returns online without manual intervention.
- Document migration. Keep the repository, dependency lockfile, environment-variable names, database schema, and deployment notes together so another host can be brought up quickly.
When a paid managed host is the better choice
Choose a paid managed platform when you want Git-based deploys, built-in logs, and a provider to handle most server maintenance. Railway’s reported $5 Hobby plan and Render’s reported $7 Starter plan illustrate the order of magnitude for basic always-on service, while the reported Fly.io shared Machine price is about $2.28 monthly for a 256 MB configuration. These figures are reports, not guarantees; verify current prices and included usage.
Best Value
A managed host is usually the simplest upgrade from a free tier. You pay for predictable runtime, keep the same repository-based workflow, and avoid configuring SSH, firewalls, system packages, and service units. You still need to understand memory limits, persistent storage, backups, and the platform’s billing behavior.
When a VPS is the right call
A VPS is appropriate when the bot needs dependable 24/7 operation, persistent storage, custom system packages, multiple processes, or more control than a PaaS exposes. It is also a good fit when you are comfortable treating the server as a small production system.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
One vendor blog, HostingBuff, argued in 2026 that once a bot needs 24/7 uptime, persistent storage, or more than about 250 MB of RAM, the hidden cost of fighting free-tier limits can exceed roughly $1 per month of cheap paid hosting. That is a vendor opinion, not an independent measurement. Use your actual workload and the value of your uptime rather than the 250 MB figure as a hard rule.
| Decision axis | Free tier | Paid managed platform | VPS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uptime | Often sleeps, pauses, or changes terms | Designed for continuous service on a paid plan | Continuous service if you maintain it correctly |
| Administration | Low to moderate, depending on the host | Low; deployment and logs are integrated | High; you manage Linux, security, and updates |
| Control | Restricted by quotas and supported runtimes | Moderate; platform conventions apply | High; install your own services and tooling |
| Cost predictability | Uncertain because allowances and policies change | Monthly bill plus possible usage charges | Usually a fixed rental plus any backups or extras |
| Scaling | Limited | Resize or add services through the platform | Resize the instance or add infrastructure yourself |
A practical VPS setup sequence
- Create the smallest suitable instance. Choose a current Linux distribution, enough memory for the bot and its runtime, and a region close to your users or required APIs. Leave headroom for spikes instead of matching the bot’s idle memory exactly.
- Create a non-root administrator. Log in with SSH keys, disable password authentication after verifying key access, and use
sudofor administrative commands. Do not run the bot as root. - Patch the operating system. On Debian or Ubuntu, the usual sequence is
sudo apt updatefollowed bysudo apt upgrade. Confirm the commands for your distribution before applying them. - Configure the firewall. Allow SSH from a trusted source where practical. A gateway bot usually needs outbound HTTPS and does not require an open inbound application port unless you also run a dashboard or webhook endpoint.
- Deploy from a private repository or secure artifact. Install the runtime version required by your bot, install locked dependencies, and place the application in a dedicated directory such as
/opt/discord-bot. - Add secrets outside the repository. Set
DISCORD_TOKENand other credentials in a root-readable environment file or a secret mechanism, with permissions that prevent ordinary users from reading it. - Use a process supervisor. Configure systemd, Docker with a restart policy, or another supervisor so the bot starts after reboot and restarts after a crash. Capture standard output and errors in logs with rotation.
- Back up persistent data. Copy databases and configuration to storage separate from the VPS. A process restart is not a backup, and a free or low-cost instance can still be lost.
- Monitor the service. Check process status, memory, disk space, reconnect frequency, and Discord command failures. Set an alert for a bot that has been offline longer than your acceptable window.
The exact package commands and service configuration depend on whether the bot uses JavaScript, Python, or another runtime. Keep the operating system and runtime patched, and test a complete restore on a second instance before calling the deployment reliable.
Security and operational mistakes to avoid
- Leaking the token: a Discord token grants control of the bot. Revoke and regenerate it immediately after exposure.
- Opening unnecessary ports: a gateway-only bot generally needs outbound connectivity, not a publicly reachable admin panel.
- Ignoring dependency updates: update deliberately, read release notes, and redeploy in a controlled window.
- Relying on a pinger: synthetic web requests cannot guarantee that a free worker will remain alive.
- Storing the only database copy on an ephemeral disk: verify persistence and maintain an external backup.
- Assuming “free” means unlimited: record the monthly credit, instance-hour, memory, storage, and bot-count limits in your deployment notes.
- Skipping rate-limit handling: queue work, respect Discord and third-party API limits, and avoid retry loops that can consume resources quickly.
Signals that it is time to migrate
- The bot is public and members report recurring offline periods.
- A free service pauses before the month ends or repeatedly sleeps.
- Memory approaches the plan limit during normal activity.
- You need persistent storage, scheduled jobs, a database, or a second worker.
- You cannot tolerate a provider reclaiming the instance or removing the allowance for new accounts.
- Manual restarts and workaround pingers take more time than a small monthly bill.
When one of these conditions appears, export your code and data, create the paid service or VPS, set the same environment variables, deploy, and keep the old service available until the new bot has reconnected and handled real commands. Then remove the old token from the retired environment and shut down the unused service.
Bottom line for choosing free hosting
Use free hosting to learn, prototype, or operate a low-stakes bot in a small private server. Among the reported options, Oracle’s free ARM instance offers the most control and capacity but demands the most Linux work; Railway and Render are easier to deploy but their reported free allowances pause or sleep; Fly.io is best treated as a low-cost paid service for new accounts; and Replit’s current free-plan always-on behavior remains unconfirmed.
For a bot that people rely on, budget for an always-on paid plan. Move to a VPS when you need control, persistent services, or more headroom and are prepared to administer Linux. The right choice is determined less by the word “free” than by whether the bot can remain connected, recover from failure, and preserve its data.
