What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no single best free data recovery tool for every situation. For recently deleted files on Windows, start with Recuva; for a wider range of logical-loss scenarios, consider EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, whose free recovery is capped; for a lost partition or boot-sector problem, use TestDisk; and for recovering individual files from a damaged or formatted file system, consider PhotoRec. None can guarantee recovery, and software cannot restore data that has been overwritten.
First, protect the data you want to recover
Stop using the affected drive, card, or USB device as soon as you notice data loss. New activity can overwrite data that recovery software might otherwise find. Where possible, download or run the recovery tool from a different drive, and save recovered files to separate storage, such as a portable external hard drive—not back onto the affected media.

If the device appears physically damaged, consumer recovery software is not a repair solution. EaseUS’s listed recovery scenarios address logical data loss, not physical damage. If the data is important, avoid further attempts that could worsen the problem.
Recommended Free Tools
Which free recovery tool fits your situation?
| Tool | Best fit | Platform and media | Free recovery limit | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Recuva | Deleted files on Windows | CCleaner describes recovery from Windows computers, memory cards, external hard drives, USB sticks, digital camera cards, and MP3 players. A complete current Windows-version compatibility list is not stated on the product page. | Not stated on the product page. | General file recovery, including a deep-scan mode according to the vendor; not a partition-repair tool. |
| EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard | Several common logical-loss scenarios | EaseUS lists internal and external drives, SD cards, and USB sticks. Its cited free-recovery allowance applies to Windows and Mac, but the Mac free version does not support free recovery from SD cards. | EaseUS support describes 2 GB total per computer: 500 MB by default and up to 1.5 GB more through sharing. | Broader listed scenarios than simple deletion, but the free allowance is capped and the vendor excludes physical damage. |
| TestDisk | Lost partitions and boot-sector repair | Platform support details are not stated in the cited FAQ. | The project FAQ says there is no amount-of-data recovery limit. | Works on partition structure and boot sectors; it is not the same task as recovering individual files with PhotoRec. |
| PhotoRec | Recovering individual files through file carving | The project search-result page lists Windows, macOS, Linux, and DOS; current platform and download details should be checked on the project site. | Not stated in the cited material. | Can search underlying data without relying on the file system, so recovered files may not retain their original names or folder structure. |
These are descriptions from the respective vendors or project pages, not results from a controlled head-to-head test. They do not establish which tool will recover a particular drive’s files.

Recuva: for straightforward Windows file deletion
Recuva is the simplest match when files were deleted from a Windows computer or removable media and the storage device still works. CCleaner says it can attempt recovery of pictures, music, documents, videos, emails, and other file types from a computer, Recycle Bin, memory card, external hard drive, USB stick, camera card, or MP3 player. The vendor also describes a deep-scan mode and attempts to recover files from damaged or newly formatted drives; those are product claims, not independently verified success rates.
Choose it when the problem is file-level loss rather than a missing partition or boot problem. The cited product page does not establish a complete current Windows compatibility matrix, so verify compatibility and obtain the installer from the official Recuva page.

EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard: more listed scenarios, with a cap
EaseUS lists recovery for deleted files in the Recycle Bin, lost Windows partitions, formatted drives, system failure, and virus-related data loss, as well as internal disks, external hard drives, SD cards, and USB sticks. The vendor also describes broad file-type support, file previews, and filters. Its page excludes physical damage from the logical-loss scenarios it covers.
The key limitation is the free allowance. EaseUS support, in an article updated October 24, 2025, says the Windows and Mac free versions allow 2 GB of total free recovery on one computer: 500 MB by default and up to 1.5 GB additional through sharing. Reinstalling the software does not reset that total. The same article distinguishes Free from Trial: Trial supports preview but does not save recovered files. On Mac, the free version does not support free recovery from SD cards. Check the current terms on the EaseUS support page before relying on the allowance.

Use EaseUS when its listed scenario matches the loss and the amount to recover may fit the cap. Its Windows product information is available at EaseUS Data Recovery Free.
TestDisk and PhotoRec: related projects with different jobs
TestDisk repairs partition and boot-sector problems
TestDisk is intended for lost partitions and boot-sector repair—not ordinary browsing for deleted files. The project FAQ says it is GPL-licensed, free, and has no amount-of-data recovery limit. If a drive no longer shows its partition or will not boot because of partition or boot-sector trouble, this is the relevant tool in this pair. These capabilities do not guarantee a fix for an individual device. See the TestDisk FAQ for the project’s scope and guidance.

PhotoRec carves individual files
PhotoRec is a file-carving tool for individual files such as photos, videos, and documents. It can search underlying data even when the file system is damaged or formatted, rather than depending on the file system’s directory structure. Because carving identifies file content rather than restoring the original directory records, original filenames and folder organization may not be preserved.
The PhotoRec project page’s search-result description lists Windows, macOS, Linux, and DOS support and recommends running the tool from removable media when working on a system drive. Check the project’s current information at PhotoRec. TestDisk’s FAQ notes that PhotoRec is often bundled with TestDisk, but their purposes remain distinct.

Choose by what happened to the files
- Files deleted from Windows: try Recuva first if the drive is otherwise functioning. EaseUS is another option if its broader workflow is useful and the free allowance is sufficient.
- Files deleted from a card, USB stick, or external drive: Recuva lists these media types; EaseUS also lists external drives, SD cards, and USB sticks, subject to its platform-specific free-tier limitation.
- A partition disappeared or the computer cannot boot because of partition or boot-sector trouble: consider TestDisk, which is built around partition and boot-sector work.
- The file system is damaged or a drive was formatted: EaseUS lists formatting among its scenarios; PhotoRec may be appropriate when the goal is to carve individual files rather than restore the directory structure.
- The drive may be physically damaged: stop using it. The cited software descriptions do not establish that these tools can repair physical damage.
Formatting and overwritten data: what software cannot undo
The TestDisk FAQ says a quick format may leave data recoverable, but a full format that overwrites data cannot be undone by software. Treat that as project guidance, not a promise that a quick-formatted drive’s files will be recoverable: the result depends on what has happened to the storage since the loss. Continued use can also overwrite data, which is why stopping activity matters.
Before starting, decide whether you need the original names and folders or only the contents. General recovery workflows may be more useful when directory information remains available; PhotoRec’s file carving searches for individual file content and may not preserve the original organization.
