To add a free country flag to a React interface, choose a component package for a ready-made React API, a CSS/SVG library for reusable assets, or a hosted image when you prefer not to bundle files. The right choice depends on your country-code format, bundle and hosting preferences, sizing needs, and how the flag should be announced to assistive technology.
How do I display a country flag in React?
Start with the country code your app already stores, then choose an option that accepts that format or convert it once where data enters the UI. For example, US, USA, and 840 are different code formats; a library that expects ISO alpha-2 codes may not accept the others.

How do component and CSS implementations differ?
Use a React component when you want a component API
A component package keeps flag rendering close to the rest of your JSX and may provide fallback behavior or props for country codes and dimensions. For example, svg-flags documents an embedded SVG component, while react-country-flag offers emoji and SVG modes. Check the package’s actual exports and fallback behavior for the version you install.

Use CSS classes when your app already manages stylesheets
With flag-icons, import the stylesheet, add the base and country classes, and set a suitable size. The class suffix uses an ISO alpha-2 code, so an alpha-3 value such as USA must be converted before rendering. The project README’s CDN example pins the stylesheet to version 7.3.2; treat that as a documented example, not a claim that it is the newest release. See the project’s setup and Sass configuration.
CSS background flags do not determine the element’s layout size for you. Set width and height deliberately, keeping the documented 4:3 or square presentation in mind. If you configure the Sass build to include only selected countries, you can avoid including every flag in that generated stylesheet.

Use a hosted image when you accept a remote dependency
An image URL keeps the flag asset outside your app bundle, but the browser must make a request to the service. The vendor’s React examples use an <img> element and offer PNG and SVG variants. Pinning a stylesheet or asset version where possible, or self-hosting the assets, can reduce reliance on a third party; confirm the service’s current terms before production use.

What should I check before choosing?
- Code format: Confirm whether the library expects alpha-2, alpha-3, or numeric codes, and normalize input at one boundary rather than scattering conversions through components.
- Delivery and bundle: Determine whether the package embeds SVGs, includes all flags, permits selecting a subset, or loads assets remotely. A README’s description is not a measurement of your production build; inspect the package exports and built output.
- Dimensions and ratio: Decide whether flags should be uniform badges or follow a particular ratio. Set width and height explicitly for CSS-based flags.
- Fallbacks: Check what happens for missing, malformed, or unsupported codes. Where the library supports one, show a visible fallback rather than an empty or broken image.
- Compatibility and maintenance: Check the current package release, React requirements, and build-tool instructions. Older webpack-oriented examples may not map directly to a modern setup.
- License and hosting: The
svg-flags,react-country-flag, andreact-flag-icon-cssrepositories state MIT licenses, but that alone does not establish terms for every upstream artwork or copied asset. Review the installed version’s license and notices. Treat a CDN vendor’s free-use wording as a statement about that service, not as the license for unrelated packages or artwork.
How should a React flag be labeled for accessibility?
Choose the accessible name based on what the flag contributes in context. If the flag is the only way the interface identifies the country, provide the country’s name as accessible text. If the same country name is already adjacent and the flag adds no information, hide the decorative image from assistive technology to avoid a repeated announcement.

The react-country-flag README explicitly leaves title and aria-label to the caller following its v2 changes. Do not assume a rendered flag automatically has a useful accessible name; check the chosen component’s behavior and supply the appropriate text yourself. Project accessibility and usage notes.
Can I use flag emoji instead of SVG?
Yes. react-country-flag documents both emoji and SVG modes. Emoji avoid managing separate SVG artwork, but their appearance depends on the platform and font; verify the result on the devices and operating systems your users rely on. Prefer SVG when you need consistent rendering or explicit control over the image asset.
