The right free browser-based productivity tool depends on the work you need it to do. Microsoft 365 web apps and Google Workspace Essentials Starter cover documents and collaboration; Notion organizes notes and knowledge; Trello and Todoist handle projects and tasks; Slack supports team communication. These six options have documented free access or free-plan details. They are not a verified ranking of the 17 best tools, and their free tiers are not interchangeable.
Compare the six tools by what you need to do
| Tool | Best fit | Free access or plan details | Browser and account notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 web apps | Creating and editing documents, spreadsheets, and presentations | Free web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are available with a Microsoft account; the free version is web-only. | Use Microsoft365.com. The cited comparison distinguishes free web apps from paid Microsoft 365 subscriptions. |
| Google Workspace Essentials Starter | Shared documents and team collaboration | The no-cost Essentials Starter offer includes Drive, Meet, Chat, Docs, Sheets, and Slides, with 15 GB of Drive storage per user. | This is a specific Workspace offer. It should not be confused with every Google Workspace plan or individual Google-account services. |
| Notion | Notes, internal knowledge, and structured information | Notion describes its free plan as including unlimited pages and core docs, wikis, and databases. | Notion says Safari, Chrome, and Edge are fully supported. |
| Trello | Visual project boards | Free allows up to 10 open boards, 10 collaborators, unlimited Power-Ups, attachments up to 10 MB each, and 250 automation runs per month. | These are limits on the Trello Free plan, not general limits for every Trello plan. |
| Todoist | Personal task lists and lightweight planning | The free Beginner plan includes five personal projects, reminders, list and board layouts, and three filter views. | The cited plan details are for the personal Beginner tier. |
| Slack | Team messaging and calls | The Free plan includes unlimited private and public channels, 90 days of searchable messages, up to 10 apps, audio/video calls up to 30 minutes, and file sharing. | The search window and call duration are Free-plan limits. |
Plan terms above are vendor specifications reported on official product or support pages as of October 2026; vendors can change them. No independent comparison establishes that one of these tools makes users more productive than another.

Choose an office suite for documents and collaboration
Microsoft 365 web apps for familiar Office files
If your main work is writing, calculating, or preparing presentations, Microsoft offers free web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to people with a Microsoft account. They run in a browser at Microsoft365.com. The important distinction is that this free access is web-only, while Microsoft 365 subscriptions are paid offerings with different terms. Choose it when browser-based Office apps meet your needs; do not assume the free offer includes the same access or features as a paid subscription.
Google Workspace Essentials Starter for a connected team set
Google’s no-cost Essentials Starter offer brings together Drive, Meet, Chat, Docs, Sheets, and Slides, with 15 GB of Drive storage per user. It may suit a team that wants shared files, meetings, messaging, and browser-based document tools in one offer. Keep the product context in mind: Essentials Starter is a particular Workspace offer, not a description of every Workspace plan or every service available through a personal Google account.

Use Notion when notes need structure
Notion combines docs, wikis, and databases in a cloud workspace, so it is a better fit for organizing reference material or maintaining a shared knowledge base than for replacing a dedicated chat app. Its stated free-plan feature set includes unlimited pages and core docs, wikis, and databases. Notion lists Safari, Chrome, and Edge as fully supported browsers. If your team depends on another browser, verify compatibility before moving important work into it.
Pick a task or project tool based on how you plan work
Trello for visual workflows and shared boards
Trello’s cards-and-boards approach is useful when work moves through visible stages or a team needs a shared project board. Atlassian’s Free-plan specifications allow up to 10 open boards and 10 collaborators, unlimited Power-Ups, attachments up to 10 MB, and 250 automation runs per month. Those ceilings matter if you expect to keep many projects open, add a larger group, or rely on automation. Check the limits against your intended workflow before adopting it as a team’s central project system.

Todoist for personal task management
Todoist is oriented toward individual task tracking rather than team-wide project boards. Its free Beginner plan lists five personal projects, reminders, list and board layouts, and three filter views. That combination can work for someone who wants to organize personal tasks in more than one view. The five-project and three-filter-view limits are relevant if you plan to split work across many projects or create multiple filtered task lists.
Choose Slack for team communication, not as a project tracker
Slack provides team messaging through channels, plus calls and file sharing. Its Free plan specifies unlimited private and public channels, a 90-day searchable-message window, up to 10 apps, and audio/video calls lasting up to 30 minutes. The searchable-message window is especially worth considering if your team relies on old conversations as an archive. Slack addresses communication; pair it with a task or project tool if you need structured ownership, deadlines, or workflow stages.

Check these limits before moving work into a free service
- Match the tool to the job. Office apps, a knowledge workspace, a task list, a project board, and team chat solve different problems. A tool that does one job well may not replace the others.
- Count the people and workspaces you need. Trello’s Free plan has limits on open boards and collaborators; Todoist’s free plan limits personal projects.
- Check storage and file restrictions. Google Essentials Starter specifies 15 GB of Drive storage per user, while Trello limits each Free-plan attachment to 10 MB.
- Consider what you need to retrieve later. Slack Free searches messages from a 90-day window, which may not suit teams that need longer message history.
- Confirm browser support and account requirements. Microsoft’s free web apps require a Microsoft account; Notion lists Safari, Chrome, and Edge as fully supported. Google says cookies and JavaScript need to be enabled for its browser-based services.
- Distinguish an ongoing free tier from a trial or paid plan. The offers described here are vendor-stated free access or free plans, but the available features and caps differ by product and can change.
Why this is a six-tool shortlist, not a top-17 ranking
The available official product and plan details substantiate these six examples, but do not support a fair, current comparison of 17 browser-based tools. Adding other familiar productivity apps without confirming their current browser access and free-plan terms would risk labeling a limited tier, trial, or paid feature set as free. Treat this as a practical shortlist organized by work type, not an objective ranking.
