Free Auto-Renewing SSL for a Namecheap Domain: Let’s Encrypt and acme.sh Setup

A Namecheap domain can use free, auto-renewing Let’s Encrypt certificates through acme.sh. The right setup depends on authoritative DNS, API access, and how renewed certificates reach your web server.

Yes—you can use a Namecheap-registered domain with free, automatically renewed Let’s Encrypt certificates through acme.sh, provided your DNS and server setup support automated validation. This is a do-it-yourself ACME workflow, not Namecheap’s own free Let’s Encrypt integration. The essential choices are who hosts your DNS, how the certificate is validated, and how it gets installed on your web server.

Know which SSL workflow you are choosing

A domain registered at Namecheap does not have to use Namecheap’s SSL products to use an ACME certificate. acme.sh is an ACME client that can request certificates and automate validation using supported DNS APIs. Namecheap also offers separate SSL products and automation. These are different workflows with different requirements.

Namecheap’s SSL coverage guidance, updated September 9, 2026, describes SSL Proxy and SSL Manager, and schedules its ACME support for November–December 2026. That date is a stated rollout window, not confirmation that the feature is available now; check the current page if you are considering Namecheap’s own ACME option.

Choose validation based on your DNS and server access

Method Best suited to What to plan for
acme.sh with Namecheap DNS API Domains whose DNS is managed through Namecheap and where API access is available Requires an API key, username, and source IP. The plugin reads and reapplies all domain records, so make a recoverable DNS backup first.
HTTP validation through webroot or server Operators with access to the website’s webroot or server and the required network path The validation request must reach the correct server. Issuing a certificate does not necessarily install or configure it for the web server.
Manual DNS validation Situations where an automated DNS API is unavailable You must add challenge TXT records by hand at issuance and again when renewal requires validation. It is not unattended renewal.
Namecheap SSL Proxy Website owners who prefer a Namecheap-managed proxy rather than server certificate administration Namecheap says this option requires the domain to use Namecheap DNS and proxies the site. It is separate from the DIY acme.sh route.
Namecheap SSL Manager Buyers of Namecheap SSL who need installation on cPanel, Apache, or NGINX Namecheap describes setup through cPanel or a terminal command on a root/admin server. It is a paid product workflow, not the free Let’s Encrypt setup below.

Before choosing, confirm which service is authoritative for your domain’s DNS, whether you can use its API, whether you need a wildcard certificate, and whether you can install certificates on the server. Also decide who will monitor failed renewals. The acme.sh README documents DNS API, webroot, standalone, Nginx, and manual validation approaches.

Prepare Namecheap DNS API access safely

For DNS automation, the domain must be using DNS where the Namecheap API can manage its host records. Namecheap’s DNS API documentation lists getHosts and setHosts. It says default DNS is required for free host-record management and other value-added services; custom nameservers can affect Namecheap-managed services. If another provider is authoritative for your DNS, use that provider’s supported acme.sh integration instead of assuming the Namecheap plugin can update the active zone.

  1. Confirm the authoritative DNS provider. Check the domain’s nameserver configuration and establish where the live DNS zone is managed.
  2. Check API availability and permissions. Follow Namecheap’s current API access requirements and ensure the source IP used for requests is permitted.
  3. Save the current DNS zone. Export or otherwise record all existing host records and verify that you can restore them before allowing automation to update DNS.

The acme.sh Namecheap DNS plugin uses the settings NAMECHEAP_API_KEY, NAMECHEAP_USERNAME, and NAMECHEAP_SOURCEIP. Its implementation warns that Namecheap API limitations mean it reads and reapplies all records for the domain. This makes a backup and a restoration plan important, especially for a zone with records used by email, verification, or other services.

Issue a certificate with automated DNS validation

Once the active DNS provider and API credentials are ready, use the Namecheap DNS integration documented by acme.sh to request the certificate. The project’s README contains installation, issuance, and provider-specific setup instructions; follow its current Namecheap plugin syntax rather than copying an outdated command. Treat API credentials as secrets: do not place them in public scripts, repositories, or logs.

  1. Install acme.sh on a machine that can securely hold the DNS credentials and run renewal jobs.
  2. Configure the three Namecheap plugin settings with the API key, account username, and permitted source IP.
  3. Run acme.sh’s documented DNS issuance command for the exact domain names you need, including any wildcard name if required.
  4. Check the ACME result and confirm that the certificate covers the intended hostname or hostnames.

DNS-based validation is useful when you cannot expose an HTTP challenge path on the web server, and it is the relevant option for wildcard issuance. It still depends on the correct authoritative DNS zone being updated and on credentials remaining valid.

Install the certificate on the web server

Certificate issuance and HTTPS configuration are separate tasks. acme.sh documents modes that validate and obtain a certificate without configuring the web server to use it. Use the project’s installation/deployment instructions for your server, then configure the server’s TLS settings to point to the deployed certificate and key. Reload or restart the service as required by that server’s documented procedure.

  • For Nginx, verify the configured certificate and private-key paths, then test and reload the Nginx configuration.
  • For Apache, verify the TLS virtual host points to the correct certificate files and reload or restart Apache.
  • For another hosting panel or managed environment, confirm that you can install custom certificates and determine how renewals trigger deployment.

After deployment, visit the site over HTTPS and confirm that the browser presents a valid certificate for the expected hostname. A successful issuance alone does not prove that the live site is serving that certificate.

What automatic renewal does—and does not—mean

The acme.sh README, accessed October 7, 2026, says certificates are renewed automatically every 30 days or earlier when the certificate authority’s ACME Renewal Information (ARI) indicates a renewal window. This is acme.sh’s stated client behavior, not a claim that every certificate has a 30-day validity period. The machine running acme.sh must remain available for its renewal job, DNS automation must continue to work, and the renewed files must be deployed to the server for HTTPS to keep using them.

Manual DNS mode does not provide a fully unattended renewal process: the README’s manual workflow requires a person to add the challenge TXT record when validation is needed. For unattended renewals, use a supported DNS API or another automated validation and deployment method.

Do not confuse that schedule with Namecheap’s paid SSL coverage. Its support article describes replacement certificates every 200 days for the SSL Proxy and SSL Manager workflows and warns that failing to reissue when required can interrupt HTTPS. Those timings apply to Namecheap’s described SSL products, not automatically to Let’s Encrypt certificates obtained through acme.sh.

Recover safely if DNS or renewal goes wrong

  • DNS records changed unexpectedly: Use the saved zone copy to restore records, then verify the live zone at the authoritative provider. Do not rerun the DNS automation until you understand which records it changed.
  • DNS validation fails: Confirm that the domain uses the provider configured in acme.sh, that API access and the source IP are still valid, and that the challenge record appears in the active DNS zone.
  • The certificate renewed but the site still shows an old or invalid one: Check the server’s certificate paths and whether the renewal workflow deploys the renewed files and reloads the service.
  • You need a hands-off process but only have manual DNS access: Manual TXT updates require human action. Arrange an API-based DNS workflow or another automated method before relying on renewal without intervention.
