Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can host an Assetto Corsa dedicated server without paying a hosting company. The server software is free through Steam, but “free” still means paying with your own electricity, upload bandwidth, router configuration and maintenance time. A home-hosted server works well for a small group when the host PC stays on and the network is configured correctly; it is less suitable for a public server that needs guaranteed uptime.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Assetto Corsa servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What “free hosting” actually includes
Assetto Corsa’s dedicated-server tool is described as free and installable from Steam’s Tools section. You do not need a monthly server bill when the software runs on your own computer. You do, however, supply everything a commercial host normally bundles into its price:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Electricity: the computer must remain powered on while people are racing.
- Internet service: players consume your connection’s upload capacity, not just its download speed.
- Networking work: the server is normally reachable only inside your home network until router port forwarding and firewall rules are set.
- Administration: you choose tracks and cars, update files, restart the process and diagnose connection problems.
A free home server is therefore best understood as “no hosting fee,” not “zero cost.” A spare desktop can keep the cash cost low, but the practical cost is your power bill and the time required to keep the service available.
What you need before installing the server
A computer that can stay available
Use a PC that can remain on for the whole session. If it sleeps, shuts down, loses network connectivity or runs a heavy workload that starves the server, every connected driver is affected. A home server can be on the same machine you use for racing, but separating the dedicated process onto another PC makes restarts and troubleshooting easier.

A reachable internet connection
Your connection must accept inbound traffic. Most home routers block unsolicited inbound connections, so a newly installed server is usually local-only. Dynamic public IP addresses can add friction because the address may change, forcing friends to use a new address or requiring a separate address-update arrangement.
Content Manager, if you want a graphical setup
Content Manager’s Server Manager is the commonly described configuration front end. It lets you select a track and car list, set the player limit and server name, then start the dedicated process. You can also edit the configuration files directly, which is useful for repeatable setups or when diagnosing a launcher problem.
Administrative access
Expect to need administrator access to install the Steam tool, create firewall rules and change router settings. If your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT, you may not receive a publicly routable address; in that case, ordinary port forwarding may not work even when the router appears correctly configured.
Install the free dedicated-server tool
- Open Steam and switch to the Library view.
- Use the library filter that shows Tools, then locate the Assetto Corsa dedicated-server tool.
- Install it to the disk where you want the server files and content to live.
- Open the installed folder and locate the
cfg/directory. The principal settings areserver_cfg.iniandentry_list.ini. - Make a backup copy of both files before changing them. A backup lets you restore a known-good configuration after an edit or content update.
The exact Steam folder path depends on your library location, so use Steam’s installation-management option rather than assuming a fixed drive or directory.

Configure a first private server
Choose the session basics
In Server Manager, select one track and the cars your group owns, then set a recognizable server name and a conservative player limit. Start with a small private test rather than publishing a large lobby immediately. This isolates configuration errors from bandwidth and public-discovery problems.
Understand the two configuration files
server_cfg.inicontains the server’s general settings, including network and lobby-related values.entry_list.inicontains the car entries that can join the session.
Keep the car entries consistent with the selected content. A server can be running correctly while a driver still fails to join because the required track or car is missing or differs from the server’s version.
Test on the local network first
Launch the server and have another device on the same home network look for it or connect using the host’s local address. A successful local test proves that the game files and basic configuration work; it does not prove that internet players can reach the machine.
Ports and lobby registration
Port information in community hosting guides is not an official Kunos specification, and examples disagree. Treat the following as the commonly cited starting point, then confirm the values in your own configuration files and server logs.

| Purpose | Commonly cited setting | Protocol | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game traffic | 9600 | UDP and TCP | Several guides identify 9600 for both protocols. |
| HTTP/lobby service | 8081 | TCP | Content Manager guides describe this for lobby polling and registration. |
| Public listing | REGISTER_TO_LOBBY=1 |
Uses the HTTP service | Required in the cited Content Manager setup guidance for listing. |
One sample configuration instead places TCP_PORT=8081 beside UDP_PORT=9600, which conflicts with guides that describe TCP 9600 as part of game traffic. Do not copy a port table blindly. Open the files shipped with your installation, compare the active values with the server log and use those values for forwarding.
Make the server reachable from the internet
- Assign the host PC a stable local address. Create a DHCP reservation in the router, or configure a local address outside the router’s automatic pool. Without this, a reboot can send forwarding rules to the wrong device.
- Forward the active game ports. In the router’s port-forwarding page, create rules for the server’s actual UDP and TCP game ports. If your configuration uses the commonly cited values, that means 9600 for both protocols.
- Forward the HTTP port when using lobby registration. If the configuration uses HTTP port 8081 for Content Manager’s lobby service, forward TCP 8081 to the same host.
- Permit the same traffic through the host firewall. A router rule cannot help if Windows Firewall or another host firewall blocks the process. Create narrowly scoped inbound rules for only the protocols and ports the server uses.
- Restart the server and test from outside your home network. Ask a friend to connect using the public address, or test from a separate mobile or remote connection. Testing from inside the same LAN can give a misleading result because some routers do not support loopback.
On Linux, one hosting guide recommends allowing UDP and TCP 9600 and TCP 8081 with ufw. Use that only when those are the ports shown by your own installation; opening unused ports increases exposure without improving connectivity.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Upload capacity and realistic player counts
Upload speed is usually the limiting resource on a home connection. One vendor guide estimates 10–20 Mbps of upload for roughly four to eight players. That is a vendor estimate, not an independently measured Assetto Corsa standard, and actual demand varies with the session, updates and other traffic on the line. No published capacity figure from Kunos, Content Manager or an independent body establishes a universal player limit.
Use a staged test:
- Run one or two remote drivers and watch for latency spikes, packet loss and visible rubber-banding.
- Add drivers gradually rather than jumping straight to the maximum configured slots.
- Stop other uploads, cloud backups and video calls during the test.
- Reduce the advertised player limit if the connection becomes unstable; a smaller reliable race is better than a full lobby that drops drivers.
Download speed still matters for retrieving content and updates, but it is generally the upstream link that determines how well a home-hosted session serves remote players.

Keeping a free server reliable
Power and sleep settings
Disable automatic sleep and hibernation on the host, and prevent routine operating-system restarts during scheduled races. If the machine must reboot for updates, announce a maintenance window and verify the server after it comes back.
Configuration backups
Keep dated copies of server_cfg.ini and entry_list.ini. Record which track, car versions and port values were active for each event. This turns a failed edit into a quick restore instead of a complete rebuild.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Security and exposure
Forward only the ports required by the active configuration. Use a non-administrator account for routine server operation where practical, keep the operating system and server files updated, and remove forwarding rules if you stop hosting. Publicly exposing a PC is a broader security decision than merely opening a game.
Monitoring
Check the server process, local disk space and network usage before inviting drivers. Review logs after every failed join attempt. A server that appears in a local browser but not to internet players usually points to addressing, forwarding, firewall or carrier-grade-NAT issues rather than a track-selection problem.
Best Value
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Friends cannot see or join the server | Missing port forwarding, host firewall block or changing local IP | Confirm the host’s current local address, forwarding destination and inbound firewall rules. |
| It works locally but not over the internet | Router does not support loopback, or the public path is not open | Test from a genuinely external network and verify the public address and active ports. |
| Server is absent from the public lobby | HTTP service or registration setting is wrong | Check the HTTP port, REGISTER_TO_LOBBY=1, TCP forwarding and the server log. |
| Drivers connect, then lag or disconnect | Insufficient upload headroom, competing traffic or unstable host | Measure upstream use, stop other uploads, lower the player cap and test again. |
| Port checks disagree with the guide | Different sample configurations use different TCP assignments | Trust the installed configuration and logs; do not assume every guide’s port table matches your build. |
| A track or car refuses to load | Content mismatch or an incorrect entry in entry_list.ini |
Verify that every driver has the same required content and that the entry list matches the selected session. |
Free home hosting versus a paid provider
| Factor | Home-hosted free server | Paid hosted server |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly hosting fee | No hosting fee; you pay electricity and internet costs. | Recurring rental charge. |
| Uptime | Depends on your PC, power and home connection. | Provider equipment is intended to remain online, subject to its service terms. |
| Ports | You configure forwarding and firewall rules yourself. | Default TCP/UDP 9600 and HTTP 8081 are often preconfigured, but instance ports can differ and must be checked in the provider panel. |
| Bandwidth and capacity | Limited by your home upload link and other household use. | Determined by the rented instance and its network allocation. |
| Support | Self-service troubleshooting. | Support may help with the machine and network, depending on the plan. |
| Control | Full access to your own files and operating system. | Convenient management, with access limited by the provider’s control panel and policies. |
Choose home hosting for occasional races, a known group and a spare computer. Pay for hosting when public availability, predictable uptime or support matters more than avoiding a monthly bill.
Should you use a free cloud tier?
Guides sometimes mention trial or free-tier virtual machines from large cloud platforms as an alternative to a home PC. Terms, quotas, regional availability and eligibility change frequently, and the material available for this topic does not verify current “always free” conditions. Treat a cloud trial as temporary experimentation, not as a guaranteed permanent host. Confirm current pricing, bandwidth limits, inbound-network rules and account requirements before deploying.
A practical decision checklist
- Use home hosting if you can keep a PC powered on, have adequate upload capacity and control the router.
- Start with a private local test, then validate an external connection before announcing the server.
- Use the ports shown in your own
server_cfg.iniand logs; community examples are not a substitute for verification. - Set a modest player limit, measure real sessions and increase it only when the connection remains stable.
- Move to a paid host when downtime, carrier-grade NAT, household bandwidth or maintenance effort becomes the limiting factor.
Bottom line
A self-hosted Assetto Corsa server is a realistic no-hosting-fee option for small groups. The dedicated tool is free, but reliable public access depends on an always-on computer, sufficient upload bandwidth, correct forwarding for the active UDP/TCP ports and, when using lobby registration, the HTTP service. Build and test locally first, verify every port against your installation, then decide whether the savings justify managing the machine yourself.
