For a self-hosted, phone-first photo library, start by evaluating Immich. PhotoPrism is geared toward organizing and searching an existing library; Nextcloud Photos and its Memories app make sense when you want photos within a broader Nextcloud setup; Ente Photos offers open-source clients and server alongside an end-to-end encrypted hosted service. None is a guaranteed one-for-one replacement for every iCloud Photos feature, and “free” software can still mean paying for storage, hardware, electricity, or an optional hosted plan.
Which alternative fits your needs?
| Option | Best fit | Phone uploads | How it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Immich | A personal or family library hosted on your own equipment | Its mobile app can upload selected albums | Self-hosted; you manage the server and a separate backup. Immich warns that iCloud Photos deletion sync can affect other Apple devices. Immich mobile app guide; backup and restore guide |
| PhotoPrism | Browsing, searching, and organizing an existing media library | Compatible third-party apps, such as PhotoSync, can back up phones | A web- and PWA-centered library; plan for a separate upload app and workflow. PhotoPrism documentation |
| Nextcloud Photos | Photos alongside file sync and other private-cloud functions | Nextcloud’s Android and iOS apps support automatic uploads | Part of a Nextcloud installation. The optional Recognize app adds AI tagging and recognition. Nextcloud Photos project |
| Memories | A more photo-focused experience for someone using Nextcloud | Automatic uploads are available through official Nextcloud mobile apps | Runs on Nextcloud rather than as a standalone photo server, and requires server dependencies. Memories project documentation |
| Ente Photos | End-to-end encrypted hosted photos, with an open-source self-hosting option | The project README describes background uploads | Hosted and self-hosted use are distinct choices: the hosted service has a storage plan, while self-hosting means operating the server. What to weigh before choosing
Automatic uploads and convenience
Immich has a first-party mobile app that can upload chosen albums. Nextcloud’s mobile apps offer automatic uploads for photos in a broader private-cloud setup. PhotoPrism documents phone backup using compatible third-party apps, so its workflow involves another app. Memories uses the official Nextcloud mobile apps for uploads; it is not a separate mobile backup service.

Hosting, control, and upkeep
Immich, PhotoPrism, Nextcloud Photos, and Memories are options for people prepared to run or use a server. That means arranging storage and maintaining the service. Ente adds a hosted option with open-source clients and server; choosing its self-hosted mode shifts server operation to you. Open-source code does not make hosted storage unlimited or remove self-hosting work.
Organization and the wider ecosystem
PhotoPrism is a candidate for people who value library browsing and search; its documentation covers filters, labels, face recognition, metadata, and web/PWA use. Nextcloud Photos places photos alongside files and other private-cloud functions, with timeline, albums, and sharing described in its project documentation. Memories adds a photo-focused Nextcloud experience, but depends on the Nextcloud environment.

Protect your photos before freeing phone space
Uploading photos to a server is not, by itself, a complete backup plan. Immich’s backup documentation treats backing up and restoring the server as a separate responsibility. If you use a phone app’s free-space feature to remove local copies, the server and its backup become especially important. An external drive can be one backup destination, but a single copy on one server or drive is not a complete protection strategy.
Understand iCloud’s deletion behavior
Immich’s mobile guide warns that iCloud Photos is a two-way sync. In its words, “deleting a photo, or using Free Up Space from your iPhone will also delete it from iCloud and all other devices (Mac, iPad) where you’re signed in with the same Apple Account.” This warning applies to the described iCloud workflow, not to every photo app. Check what a cleanup action removes before using it, and keep an independent backup of anything you cannot afford to lose.

Setup considerations for the two Nextcloud options
Nextcloud Photos
Choose this when you already use Nextcloud or want photos as one part of a private-cloud installation. Automatic uploads come through the Nextcloud mobile apps. Its optional Recognize app can add AI tagging and recognition, according to Nextcloud’s project documentation.
Memories
Memories is a separate app built to run on Nextcloud, not a standalone alternative you install by itself. Its installation documentation lists Nextcloud and server-side requirements, including database, PHP extensions, media tools, and cache setup. Check the current installation guide against your server before choosing it.

- 🔝 [Note]The Photo stick uses a 512GB memory card, but because the USB flash drive's operating system and the instruction manual stored on it will occupy some storage space, the actual usable capacity of the iPhone flash drive is around 487GB. "No app required" means that this model of iphone usb stick uses the "File" app that comes pre-installed on iPhone. If you uninstalled this app beforehand, you will need to download it again.
- 👍【No need to download Third-Party Apps】Running out of space on your iPhone or iPad? This 512GB photo stick offers immediate storage relief. Ideal for travel photographers editing on iPads/iPhone/PC/Android, it eliminates storage worries across all your devices. Simply plug it in - no need to download any app. Simply insert the flash drive into the iPhone or iPad, and go to the "Files" app, allowing you to store precious memories and important files with ease.
- 👑【3 in 1 Multi-Port iPhone Flash Drive】Our versatile 3-in-1 iPhone storage stick features Lightning and Type-C ports and a separate USB-C (with an Adapter), streamlining data transfer between devices. Say goodbye to cables, iTunes, and iCloud restrictions. Compatible with iPhone 17/16/15/14/13 series, iPad Air/Pro, Android Phone (with OTG enabled), and computers. (Note: Requires iOS 13 or higher for iPhone; Android devices must support OTG)
- 💽【Watch Movies, Photos, and Play Music Directly】Store your favorite videos, audios, and music on your iPhone photo transfer Stick, then seamlessly plug and play on your iPhone or iPad anytime, anywhere. No more need for Internet or WiFi. This iPhone memory stick plays videos in many different formats. Pictures stored on the Phone storage device also support different formats. Great way to store all your pictures and videos on a phone's external storage device.
- 🔍[Note]It is recommended to remove your phone case when using flash drive, as a thick case can cause poor contact at the ports. When transferring data, it is advised not to select too many files to transfer at once, as this may cause system interruption and transfer failure. Android phones do not need to download an app, but other compatible apps can be downloaded for features such as file encryption.
How to make the decision
- Want a phone-first library on your own equipment? Evaluate Immich, then plan server backups before relying on it as the only copy.
- Already have a large library to browse and organize? Consider PhotoPrism and confirm which compatible phone-upload app suits your workflow.
- Want photos with file sync and other private-cloud tools? Consider Nextcloud Photos; look at Memories if you want its more photo-specific interface and can meet its dependencies.
- Prioritize end-to-end encryption and want a hosted option? Review Ente’s current hosted terms. Choose self-hosting only if you are prepared to run and maintain the server.
Before moving or deleting originals, verify that uploads completed, understand how deletions behave across connected services, and establish a separate backup you can restore.
