CarMD’s current API coverage, access terms, and pricing are not established by available documentation.
Which kind of vehicle data do you need?
“Vehicle data” can mean several different things. A VIN decoder identifies a vehicle and returns fields reported by its manufacturer. Recall and complaint databases expose public safety records. Repair-intelligence services interpret diagnostic conditions and may associate them with likely causes, parts, or costs. A car’s OBD-II port, meanwhile, can provide live diagnostic data from that particular vehicle.

Those categories overlap only partly. Choose an alternative by the data you need, not simply because a service describes itself as a vehicle-data API.
- VIN identity and specifications: NHTSA vPIC.
- Public recalls and complaints: NHTSA’s separate datasets and APIs.
- Vehicle-specific diagnostic information: CarMD describes a broader proprietary service, but current API details are unverified.
- Live data from a car you can access: a compatible OBD-II adapter and software.
Best free API for VIN decoding: NHTSA vPIC
NHTSA’s Product Information Catalog and Vehicle Listing API (vPIC) is a free public API for decoding VINs and retrieving vehicle information submitted by manufacturers. NHTSA says registration is not required. Its data is intended primarily for model years 1981 forward and vehicles intended for sale or importation into the United States; older VIN standards and vehicles outside that context may not decode or may return limited details. See NHTSA’s vPIC API documentation and NHTSA’s VIN decoder information.

It is not a universal source for every vehicle attribute: results depend on what manufacturers have submitted, and it does not provide a repair-fix or repair-price database.
API access and volume limits
NHTSA describes vPIC as free for public use, with no registration requirement. That does not mean unrestricted throughput: automated traffic controls apply. NHTSA’s FAQ says there is no fixed daily action limit and describes handling 1,000–2,000 transactions per minute during a normal weekday as a capacity statement, not a service-level guarantee. For large batch jobs, schedule requests off-peak as NHTSA recommends. Check the vPIC FAQ and manufacturer information for current operating guidance.

For recalls and complaints, use NHTSA’s separate data
NHTSA’s API and dataset catalog includes vehicle recall and complaint records. The complaints-by-vehicle example supports lookup by make, model, and model year. These sources are useful for checking public safety records, but a complaint or recall is not an individualized diagnosis, prediction of the next failure, or repair estimate. Review the NHTSA datasets and API catalog for current endpoints and fields before implementation.
Where free public data stops short of CarMD
CarMD describes a service covering diagnostics and maintenance information, technical service bulletins and recalls, likely causes and fixes for indicated conditions, parts identification, and predicted future failures. Its terms say vehicle-specific probable causes, fixes, and predicted failures draw on historical data compiled by ASE-certified master technicians; cost estimates may omit diagnostic time. Those are CarMD’s descriptions of its service, not independent validation of accuracy. See CarMD’s terms of use.

This automotive diagnostic scanner is designed for wide vehicle coverage; please check compatibility with your vehicle before purchase
That breadth is a different data job from VIN decoding or public complaint lookup. CarMD’s current site names an API service, but current endpoints, coverage, request limits, commercial terms, and pricing are not established here. A 2020 CarMD announcement discussed APIs and vehicle-data licensing, but it does not establish present availability or price. Do not assume the developer API is free because CarMD also offers a consumer app. See CarMD’s current site and its press releases.
CarMD also publishes figures of 40 million vehicle-health scans each year, 17,000+ affiliate automotive retail outlets, and 20 years of real-world vehicle diagnostic data. These are company-published promotional figures; the page does not state a measurement method or provide independent corroboration. They do not answer whether an API currently offers a particular endpoint or price.

Comparison: what each option can and cannot do
| Option | Best fit | Important limits | Access and cost evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| NHTSA vPIC API | VIN decoding and manufacturer-submitted vehicle fields | Primarily model year 1981+ and US-intended vehicles; not a repair-fix or price source | Free public use; no registration required. Automated traffic controls apply. |
| Standalone vPIC database | Local or offline VIN decoding | VIN decoding only; other vehicle attributes require API calls | Downloadable from NHTSA; its page identifies a September 19, 2026 release. |
| NHTSA recall and complaint APIs | Public recall and safety complaint records | Not a vehicle-specific diagnosis, predicted repair, or cost estimate | Public NHTSA datasets and API documentation; verify current endpoint contracts. |
| CarMD API | Potentially broader aftermarket diagnostics, fixes, parts, and costs | Current API functionality, coverage, terms, and pricing are not established | CarMD currently names an API service; historical 2020 material is not proof of current terms. |
| OBD-II diagnostic adapter | Reading diagnostic data from a compatible vehicle you can physically access | Needs a vehicle and compatible software; not a general fleet/VIN API or historical repair database | CarMD describes a Bluetooth dongle that plugs into a vehicle’s OBD-II port; compatibility depends on vehicle and software. |
When an OBD-II adapter is the right alternative
A Bluetooth OBD-II adapter can help collect data from a specific compatible car through its diagnostic port. CarMD describes a dongle-based workflow for this purpose. It is useful when your goal is to read a vehicle’s own diagnostic signals and you can access the vehicle. It is not a hosted API for arbitrary VINs, and it does not supply CarMD’s proprietary repair-history information. Verify adapter and software compatibility for the vehicle before relying on it. See CarMD’s hardware and product information.
Quick Recap
How to choose
- For VIN decoding or basic manufacturer-reported specifications: use vPIC, and confirm that your vehicles fit its model-year and US-market scope.
- For a large local VIN-decoding workload: consider the standalone vPIC database; use the API for attributes beyond VIN decoding.
- For public safety history: query NHTSA’s recall and complaint datasets separately from vPIC.
- For likely causes, fixes, parts, or repair costs: request current CarMD API documentation and commercial terms directly before deciding whether it fits. The public alternatives described here do not establish equivalent repair intelligence.
- For data from a car in hand: consider compatible OBD-II hardware and software, understanding that this is a vehicle-side workflow rather than a general data API.
