Free AI API Keys for Vibe Coding: Where to Get One and What It Allows

Free AI API access is available from several providers, but model availability, quotas, data terms and editor compatibility vary. Compare the documented limits and connect your key securely.

You can get free AI API access for vibe coding from providers including Google Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter and Cloudflare Workers AI. The key itself is only a credential: each provider sets the available models, quota and billing rules, and a free allowance is not unlimited. Check that your coding assistant supports the provider’s API and the specific model before you create a key.

What “free AI API key” means for a coding assistant

An API key lets an application authenticate to a model provider. It does not unlock every model or guarantee a particular amount of use. Free access is tied to the provider’s plan and may also depend on the selected model, account and location. Quotas can be measured in requests, tokens or provider-specific units, so a number from one service cannot be directly compared with another.

Vibe-coding tools may send code, conversation history and tool calls repeatedly. That can use a token or request allowance faster than occasional chat. Treat the limits below as provider documentation snapshots, not guaranteed allowances for every account or model.

Which providers offer free API access?

Provider What its documented free access includes Important limits or conditions
Google Gemini API Google’s pricing page lists free and paid usage by model; selected models have a free tier. It is not blanket free access to every model or feature. Google says limits can change, and the applicable data-use terms differ by tier and model. Inspect the exact model row.
GroqCloud A free plan with model-specific limits. Groq’s documented examples include selected model rows listing 30 requests per minute (RPM), 1,000 requests per day (RPD), 8,000 tokens per minute (TPM) and 200,000 tokens per day (TPD). These figures do not apply to every model; check the limits shown for your organization.
OpenRouter Its pricing page snapshot, accessed October 7, 2026, listed more than 25 free models and four free providers. The free plan was listed with a 50-requests-per-day limit. Models and upstream providers can change, so availability is not a permanent catalog guarantee; paid usage has separate terms.
Cloudflare Workers AI The pricing page, last updated October 1, 2026, lists a total free allocation of 10,000 Neurons per day. Some models require paid billing. The limits page, last updated September 17, 2026, lists 300 text-generation requests per minute by default, except for models requiring Workers Paid; paid models have separate account and model limits. The pricing page lists $0.011 per 1,000 Neurons beyond the free allocation on Workers Paid.

These figures use different units and conditions; they are not a quality or speed ranking. The cited provider documentation does not establish a tested comparison of coding quality or latency. OpenAI’s cited help guidance explains limits and billing errors but does not establish a free API tier.

How to choose a free API for vibe coding

Start with compatibility, then compare the limits and terms that matter for your expected workflow. A model appearing in a provider’s free catalog is not enough if your editor cannot send requests to that provider or use that model ID.

  • Provider and model support: Confirm the coding assistant accepts the provider’s API endpoint, authentication format and exact model ID. No editor-by-editor compatibility matrix is established here, so use the editor’s own documentation.
  • Quota type: Check requests per minute and day as well as tokens per minute and day where listed. A fast sequence of agent calls can hit a request cap; large files or long conversation histories can hit token limits.
  • Model and context fit: Verify the specific model is included in the free tier and that its context window and tool-call support suit your coding tasks. The cited sources do not establish a comparative coding-quality ranking.
  • Account and region: Check eligibility and the limits shown in your own account. Provider availability and quotas may vary.
  • Data terms: Read the terms for the exact model and tier. Google’s pricing page distinguishes data-use terms between some free and paid usage; do not assume one model’s terms apply to the whole catalog.
  • What happens at the cap: Find out whether requests stop, billing begins, or an upgrade is needed. If you enable paid billing, set a budget or usage alert where available.

Get a key and connect it safely

  1. Check your coding application first. Find its provider setup instructions and note the supported endpoint, model ID and authentication format.
  2. Create a key in the provider’s official dashboard. Select a model whose current free-tier terms match your needs, and check its account-specific quota before relying on it.
  3. Store the credential outside your code. Use the coding tool’s secret manager or a local environment variable. Do not put the key in a browser bundle, public repository, screenshot or prompt.
  4. Apply available restrictions. For Google Gemini, Google’s key documentation says that, starting May 28, 2026, new AI Studio keys are created as auth keys. It also says the Gemini API rejects unrestricted standard keys, while standard keys with explicit restrictions continue to work. Keys are associated with Google Cloud projects, which govern billing, collaborators and permissions.
  5. Test a small task. Check the provider’s usage dashboard and response headers so you can see whether calls are succeeding and consuming the expected allowance. If billing is enabled, verify the budget or alert settings.
  6. Rotate an exposed key. Revoke or replace a credential if it appears in public code, a screenshot or another place you do not control.

What happens when you hit a limit?

A free allowance can be exhausted even when the key is valid. Rate-limit errors indicate that a request or token rate limit has been reached; an exhausted-credit or organization-usage-limit error is a different billing or account condition. OpenAI’s help guidance distinguishes these types of errors, but it does not establish that OpenAI API access is free. For any provider, check its account dashboard and error details rather than assuming every failed call means the key is invalid.

Limits, model availability, pricing, key policies and data terms can change. The dated provider figures above are snapshots from documentation available in October 2026; verify the current terms in the provider’s official documentation and your account before building a workflow around them.
