Free, ad-supported streaming is a sensible choice if cutting recurring costs matters more than avoiding commercials and you’re flexible about what to watch. A paid service is worth considering when a particular show, film, or plan feature justifies its fee. Check the exact plan: paid does not always mean ad-free.
How to decide
Compare the service you would actually use, not “free” and “paid” in the abstract. The right choice depends on four things:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Cost: A free service avoids a subscription charge. If you are considering several paid services, add their monthly fees together.
- Ads: Free services commonly use commercial breaks. Some paid tiers also include ads, while even an ad-free tier may have exceptions.
- Catalog: Choose for the specific programs you want, not just a headline catalog size. Availability changes, and a large library does not guarantee it has your must-watch title.
- Viewing features: Compare resolution, simultaneous screens, downloads, and whether the service offers on-demand titles or a linear channel guide.
What free, ad-supported streaming offers
Ad-supported video can provide on-demand films and shows without a subscription fee. Tubi says it is funded by ads and that viewers do not need to pay; it explains, “We stay free by showing short ad breaks during our movies and TV shows.” Tubi’s Help Center also says, “Right now, we don’t have an ad-free option.” These statements describe Tubi specifically, not every free service.
Tubi describes a catalog that includes movies and shows from partners such as Paramount, Lionsgate, and MGM. It lists ways to watch including phones, computers, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, game consoles, and selected smart TVs. A streaming device is optional if the television you already own supports the service’s app.

Tubi reported more than 100 million monthly active users and more than 1 billion viewing hours in May 2025. In its June 17, 2025 announcement, it also reported nearly 300,000 movies and TV episodes, 400 Tubi Originals, and that over 95% of viewing was on-demand movies and TV shows. These are company-reported figures for that period, not independently verified current catalog counts. The same announcement attributed 2.2% of total U.S. TV viewing minutes in May 2025 to Tubi, citing Nielsen’s The Gauge.
What paid services can add—and what they may not
A subscription may be worthwhile for a particular library, exclusive series, current episodes, or plan features. Hulu, for example, describes its library as including current episodes, exclusive series, films, Hulu Originals, and kids’ shows. The value depends on whether the service has the content and features you want.

Ads depend on the tier and content, not merely whether you pay. Netflix lists both an ad-supported plan and ad-free plans. Hulu says its Premium plan has no ad breaks for its library, but select live and linear content still has ads, and a few shows may have short breaks around episodes because of streaming rights.

| Service and plan | Displayed U.S. price | Ads and features described by provider |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix Standard with ads | $8.99/month | Ads; two devices at a time; 1080p. |
| Netflix Standard | $19.99/month | Ad-free; two devices at a time; 1080p. |
| Netflix Premium | $26.99/month | Ad-free; four simultaneous devices; 4K HDR. |
| Hulu With Ads | $12.49/month | Ad-supported library. |
| Hulu Premium | $21.49/month | No ad breaks for the library, with the live/linear and rights-related exceptions described above. |
These plan examples show why it helps to check the exact tier rather than assume that paying removes ads. Netflix also notes that some third-party packages may not offer its ad-supported experience. Check provider terms for the package you are considering.
Pick a format that matches how you watch
Streaming can mean more than browsing an on-demand library. Roku’s 2025 Form 10-K distinguishes subscription video, ad-supported video—including AVOD and free ad-supported streaming television (FAST)—and transactional video. AVOD typically offers a catalog to choose from; FAST services provide linear channels that play on a schedule. A channel guide may suit someone who wants to browse what is on, while on-demand viewing suits someone who wants to select a specific title.

There is no established apples-to-apples ad-minutes-per-hour comparison here across free and paid streamers. Tubi says its ad minutes per hour are substantially fewer than traditional broadcast or cable, but that is its own comparison and does not establish how its ad load compares with other streaming services. Your tolerance for breaks is personal.

- Start with what you want to watch. Check whether the service carries the specific series, film, or type of programming you care about. Do not rely on catalog totals alone.
- Try a free service if avoiding a bill is the priority. It may be enough if you are flexible about titles and accept ad breaks.
- Pay for a clear reason. That might be a particular program, downloads, more simultaneous screens, higher resolution, or a tier that reduces interruptions.
- Compare the actual plan. Check ad status and exceptions, resolution, screen limits, downloads, region, and package terms before subscribing.
- Consider rotating subscriptions. Keep a paid service while its current programming is useful, then cancel or rotate it and use free services in between. Confirm renewal and billing terms directly with the provider.
What paying does not prove
The information available here does not establish that paid services universally show fewer ads, collect less personal data, or offer a better catalog for every viewer. Roku’s platform disclosures describe Roku’s own practices; they should not be generalized to every streaming service or treated as evidence that paying eliminates advertising-related data collection.
