The Framework Laptop 12 is a compelling compact daily driver if repairability, customizable ports, and a 360-degree hinge matter more to you than top-tier speed, long unplugged workdays, or a polished premium feel. But the supplied evidence does not establish a two-week hands-on test by this writer, so this review does not pretend to report personal observations. The independent performance and battery results below are from a specific 2025 configuration; Framework’s current product page describes a refreshed 2026 generation.
Which Framework Laptop 12 is this review about?
Generation matters. Framework’s current product page, accessed October 13, 2026, describes a 2026 refresh with Intel Core Series 3 processors: Core 3 304, Core 5 320, and Core 7 350. Framework says this generation updates processors, graphics, connectivity, and biometrics while keeping the repairable design. Its update information lists support for up to 64GB of DDR5-6400 memory, Intel Graphics with Xe3 cores, Wi-Fi 7 module support, and Thunderbolt 4 on the upper-left and upper-right ports. Framework’s current Laptop 12 page and 2026 generation update are the relevant references for those current details.

The independent test figures in this article are not measurements of that refreshed model. PCWorld reviewed a 2025 Laptop 12 with an Intel Core i5-1334U, 16GB of memory, and Intel UHD graphics. Its results are useful context for the earlier configuration, not a prediction of how the 2026 processors perform. PCWorld’s 2025 review identifies its test unit and reports its results.
Why the Laptop 12 stands out: repairability you can use
The Laptop 12’s main distinction is that modularity is part of the everyday ownership experience, not just a spec-sheet promise. PCWorld reports that installing memory and storage in its DIY unit involved removing a plastic piece and snapping the modules into place. The keyboard tray is magnetic, and the four expansion ports can be swapped. Available module types cited in the review include USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet, microSD, and SD. That makes it easier to tailor the machine to the ports you actually need rather than carrying the same set of adapters indefinitely.

Framework introduced the 2025 convertible with modular memory, storage, and Wi-Fi, and described it as supporting Windows 11 and Linux. Those were launch-era statements; check the current configuration and specifications before buying components for a 2026 model. Framework’s 2025 launch announcement describes the original design. RTINGS also identifies replaceable or upgradeable major components and configurable ports as central strengths. RTINGS’ Laptop 12 overview offers an independent perspective.
Modularity gives owners more control over repairs and configuration, but it does not guarantee that every part will remain available or that a repair will be simple in every case. It is best understood as a practical advantage: more components are designed to be accessed or changed than on a typical compact laptop.
How well does it handle everyday work?
PCWorld found the 2025 i5-1334U configuration adequate for routine productivity, but not a strong choice for CPU-heavy multithreaded work or 3D graphics compared with newer laptops. Its reported benchmark scores were:

| Test | PCWorld’s 2025 review-unit result |
|---|---|
| PCMark 10 | 5,288 |
| Cinebench R20 multi-core | 2,106 |
| HandBrake encode | 2,648 seconds |
| 3DMark Time Spy | 1,255 |
These figures belong to PCWorld’s 2025 review unit and test methods, not the 2026 refresh or every possible Laptop 12 configuration. For web browsing, documents, messaging, and similar work, the 2025 test suggests usable everyday performance. For sustained encoding, demanding creative workloads, or 3D gaming, the reviewed configuration’s results point to a poor fit. The 2026 Core Series 3 models have a different processor and graphics lineup, and the cited tests do not establish their performance.
What should you expect from battery life?
PCWorld reported two distinct battery outcomes for its 2025 review unit. In its controlled test, it measured 688 minutes—11 hours and 28 minutes—of local 4K video playback with Windows 11, airplane mode enabled, and the screen set to 250 nits. Separately, reviewer Chris Hoffman reported about five hours during a mixed productivity workload involving Chrome, Slack, Word, OneNote, and similar apps. The controlled video result and the reported workday experience measure different kinds of use; neither is a guarantee for another owner or for the 2026 generation.
For a buyer who needs to work unplugged through a full day, the mixed-workload report is the more cautionary figure. Battery life can vary with screen brightness, workload, wireless use, configuration, and battery condition, and the available independent results are for the 2025 i5-1334U machine. Framework lists a 50Wh battery for the current model on its specifications page, but capacity alone does not establish real-world runtime.

Does the convertible design make it a useful tablet?
The Laptop 12 is a 12.2-inch convertible with a 360-degree hinge, so the display can fold back for tablet-style use. Framework lists a separately purchased USI 2.0 stylus for the current model. That makes the format relevant for handwriting, sketching, or navigating touch-first apps, especially when a conventional laptop is not the most comfortable way to interact.
The original 2025 announcement described a 1920×1200 touchscreen with stylus support and brightness above 400 nits. Those are launch-era specifications, not a guarantee that every current configuration has identical display characteristics; check the current product listing for the exact SKU. Framework’s current specifications identify the hinge and separate stylus option. Framework Laptop 12 specifications
Framework’s listed USI 2.0 stylus is the accessory to consider for pen input; confirm compatibility and current availability on Framework’s product page before purchasing. Expansion Cards can likewise help tailor the available ports, but make sure the modules you select match your actual devices and configuration.

What does the DIY price include?
Framework lists a $549 starting price on its current DIY page, but that is not a reliable estimate of a complete, ready-to-use system by itself. The required components and included items depend on the selected configuration. A DIY buyer may need to add memory, storage, an operating system, a power adapter, and Expansion Cards. Framework’s DIY 60W USB-C adapter is optional, while the pre-built configuration shown includes an adapter. Check the exact current SKU and cart contents rather than assuming the starting price includes everything. Framework’s current product page
That configuration flexibility cuts both ways: you can avoid paying for components you already own or do not need, but the final cost can rise once you add the parts and accessories required for your setup. Compare the complete configuration you intend to buy, not the entry price alone.

- It is a strong fit if you want a compact convertible, value accessible repairs and upgrades, and expect to customize the port selection over time.
- It is a weaker fit if your priorities are sustained heavy workloads, dependable all-day runtime away from an outlet, or the most polished hardware feel for the money.
- Check the configuration carefully if you are choosing DIY: memory, storage, adapter, operating system, and port modules can affect what you need to add and the eventual total.
- Buy by generation: the cited independent test results cover a 2025 i5-1334U model, while Framework’s current listing describes the 2026 Core Series 3 refresh.
RTINGS notes that alternatives may offer a more polished hardware experience, while the Laptop 12’s unusual strength is its modularity. PCWorld reviewer Chris Hoffman summed up the specific appeal in his review: “If you want a modular, repairable, customizable 2-in-1 laptop, there’s no other machine like this on the market. This is your dream machine.” That is Hoffman’s evaluative judgment, not a universal verdict—and the fit depends on whether repairability and customization outweigh the trade-offs for you. PCWorld
